General: Bill’s Best of E3 2010

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

MMORPG's Bill Murphy spent a lot of time at this year's E3 perusing all the MMOs fans have been waiting to find out more about. That in mind, Bill has picked four games worthy of note. Find out which ones struck him as 'ones to watch' as 2010 moves along.

By now the dust is pretty much settled on this year’s E3. As previously noted, it was my first. During which I had the opportunity to take in far too many sights and sounds and also a fair share of promising upcoming games. While I could go into great detail all over again about the many cool looking console and handheld games I saw at the show, what I really was impressed with were some of the non-traditional titles on hand in MMO form. Some might argue that there was nothing quite “awe-inspiring” from the show this year, but I left Los Angeles pretty stoked about the games on the horizon.

These aren’t MMORPG.com’s “Official Best of E3 Awards”, and instead merely reflect my own personal impressions from the show floor. There were games I didn’t play (The Old Republic was one for example, The Agency another) and there were some I just got to watch. Regardless, the following are my games to keep an eye on from E3 2010. Discuss!

Read Bill’s Best of E3 2010.

Cheers,

It's good to hear that JGE looks promising. It's taken quite the rollercoaster ride in terms of development, and we do need a twitch-based space combat MMO that plays well and hopefully has at least some depth.

    Nice nutshells.

Keeping an eye on JGE, and glad the combat felt intuitive. That is my second biggest gripe with EVE. First being that it is just too awesome and I don't have the free time to dedicate to enjoy it. :)

Agree about the RP aspect of super heroes games. Was a long time CoX player and actually even had a guild (SG) for a while named "Court Ordered Community Service" where the idea was that we were not heroes, but simply had super powers and had been ordered community service for some misdemeanors, so we had to fight gangs etc.

Rift does look good and by reading all the information available via interviews and such it is easy to see that the Trion team are making an effort to bring that same level of care to the rest of the game.

One thing I've noticed, and was recently talked about by Arithion on her podcast interview with Cindy Bowen is that the majority makeup of the community is of people who have been into MMO gaming since UO/EQ and not first timers or those that have only played WoW.

Guess there are more old timers out there than some here would give credit for. They just don't see the need to come here and argue to prove they exist. *shrug & smile*

I am not sure about the DCUO.  Still kinda feeling a bit overdone with the CoX and CO series.  Even though I felt like more of a hero in Co than CoX it is really hard to feel like a hero when there are 200+ other "heroes" running around.  Make you feel less heroic and the game feel very static.

This has some interesting aspects tho, I may have to check it out.

JGE is something I will definately be going to try.  Concidering I played JG from damn near inception until a year or two after release.  I am looking forward to their next try on it.  Fond memories of th original.....

Interesting to hear about Vindictus.   I have yet to see a f2p game do pvp very well.  They just can't seem to resist putting game changing items in the item shop.  Guess we will have to wait to see if these devs succomb to that too.

Good to hear JGE is looking better.  With Eve being the only decent Sci-Fi game out there there is plenty of room for a good space game, just hope it remains subscription.

I have my doubts about anything that SOE does.  I will be surprised if DCO turns out to be a decent game.

Rifts impressed me so far with what I have seen.

I think the genre is looking up for once.  Looks like some decent games coming down the pike finally.

Rift does look interesting and personally I remember how addicted I was to Wing Commander so if JGE gives that kind of feel I could be in some serious trouble putting that game down.

I must admit that Rift Looks amazing. And from what I have seen of the game play this is very impressive as well, I cant wait for this game to be released.

This looks like a good list. I haven't followed Vindictus' development at all, but after reading the description of it from Bill, I'll definitely be following it now.

JGE doesn't really interest me that much since if I want to play a mainly spaceflight MMO I'll just go back to my 4 year old EvE character that I've retired temporarily.

Rift is the one I really have my eye on, even before anything else. I'm really interested to find out what is happening with that game.

I don't really have much to say about DC Universe. I haven't followed its development at all, having been more interested in CO and CoH/CoV. I suppose it could catch my interest though when more material is released about it.

Here's a video of Vindictus (being called Mabinogi Heroes in Asia):

    ingame gameplay shots

To me it looks like a major upgrade to combat, more interactive with environment and more dynamic than even a TERA.

Thats the best?! Where's Star Wars? Where's Final Fantasy 14? Weren't they previewd at the show? Or, didn't they make that great of an impression

Thanks, looks really good! Like DDO but with some new stuff and better looking. Not a big fan of the asian style though.

His is a personal list of things he saw, hence 'Bill's Best of E3 2010'. If he wasn't impressed by Star Wars and FF XIV, it's in his perfect right to not include them in his opinion piece.

If you had read the whole article, Bill said he didn't play SW:TOR. This was just HIS personal "MMOs to keep an eye on" list.

Never heard of Vindictus before E3, and now am quite interested. My main reservation is having to play a pre-made toon( Fiona, or Lann atm, although devs say a third will be added). Supposedly you can change the hair and armor colors; whoopdeedoo. A bunch of clones running around the world. I can only assume this decision is due to limiltations of the game's interactive environment, but don't know if it will fly in an MMO.

However, since it IS FTP, definitely worth a try for the unique combat alone.

There are so many new titles coming at us, hard to keep focused on a few.

Really looking forward to Jumpgate.  Rift sounds interesting too, although I usually get suckered into a pretty game, then the game mechanics make me run for cover.

Not overly keen on F2P, but DC universe...maybe.
