They expect me to fall for that crap? You got to be kidding me, almost every MMO that have played since World of Warcraft had some form of name protection to where no one can use your name. World of Warcraft seems is the only MMO that allow copycatting of names......

Why why why did you go to all that trubble and i guess money for a lawyer just for a name in game?

Perusing the site eventually lead to me heading on over to the Armory to look up my chars and reminisce. Now before you jump to conclusions, stay with me on this as I'm not talking about names like Legolas (I would never) or even Guinness (I did, a Dwarf Hunter named after my favorite beer). I am referring to names that I came up with on my own that I've never seen in any game I've ever played since WoW. Names that I came up with, like the one that was a jumbled combination of the names of two of my exes, for example.

Coincidence, I think not. There is no way that all these others came up with these names on their own or that all these people were even inspired by my character. No, I am lead to believe that only Blizzard the "unimaginative" the "stealer of ideas" is leaching the names that others create for their random name generator. Therefore, my suggestion would be, for those that regard certain character names, be careful as to which names you use in WoW. Chances are, many others will eventually end up with said name, growing fonder of it, and perhaps even taking it with them to a future game thus preventing you from using it.

I realize that many of you won't give a $#!7 regarding your names as it is quite obvious in most games I play. However, I do know that there are those of you that have 1 or more names that do have sentimental value therefore, I thought I'd share.

Blizzard never stole my name.  They did however, beat my dog, and I'm never playing another game made by them ever again.   I loved that dog.

I used to play a dwarf named Bofur. Three years after creating this character i got a whisper from an angry player telling me i stole the name he came up with a long time ago. He was suprised when i told him i didn't steal the name from him but, from a book The hobbit by Tolkien. This happens when playing games online, and i don't think you should worry too much about people with the same name when playing online games. But if you do worry about this, don't pick that special name, because when it's good somebody else WILL use it

Blizzard stole your name? No way.

I was helping a guy set up his gmail account the other day and it said his username was already taken.  He refused to believe that someone else already had it.  "No way someone else would ever pick that name!"  I told him that here is nothing new under the sun.

Blizzard didn't steal your name.  If they populated thier name generator with names of players, I can only imagine some of the names that would pop up.

    Trade Chat:

    2. [Trade] <Random Player> Dude, that's a hilarious name.

    2. [Trade] <Luvstospooge> LOL thx, the I got it from the random name generator.

You hit the nail on the head mate, I feel the exact same way about my real name, my Mum and Dad took the time to think up an original name and what do I find when I go to school, crap loads of ppl have the same blasted name, then when I finished school and started work there where even more ppl with the same name.

This is total BS, names should be totally unique and I say we burn anyone who ever thinks of copying them.

yea right they took mine too! when i started i was the only thane on eredar, and then, with a few patches, BAM, there is a horseman named thane!

    omg!

or is that actually no joke  here? :P

would be useful to actually know what names you ramble about, but since that info is missing i don't think it's that important anyway

the moment you created your char on blizzard's server you gave up all rights on him, he was owned by blizz, including your name.

Seriously?  You really think you are so creative that no one could possibily arrange letters in the same sequence as you have?

I don't think you comprehend the scale at which gamers create and consume character names.

I agree completely, 'somebody' may come up with the same name, but 50 to even a hundred or more, c'mon. I am speaking of names that I had that shortly after the armory had first come out, upon searching it, I was the only one with those names. Now there are dozens if not more players with said names. Like I stated previously, I can understand a few copycats or even 1 or 2 others randomly coming up with some of them, but I have a hard time believing in those numbers.

Once upon a time I've created 'awsome rpg name' that I thought is one of it's own kind, that NOBODY, absolutely nobody would think of that...but, when I've checked armory there were about 10-20 of us, I assumed some are just alts of the same players that recreated this one perfect name on different server.

My conclusion after that - you're not as unique as you may think. There are players out there, smart players, creative players. WoW became too big and popular!

  • AlberelAlberel Member Posts: 1,121

I always use the name Alberel or one of a few slight variations. In multiple games now each of those variations has gotten me /tells from other players asking if it was a reference to a book/film/song etc. I made up these names completely on my own but every single one of them already existed in some other form.

Whatever name you used OP, I can guarantee you it already existed somewhere if you were to look hard enough.

In WoW's specific case, given the size of the population I'd be surprised if anyone at all still has a completely unique name. There're only so many believable names that 11 million people can come up with before they start to repeat.

I'm quite sure it's happened to many of you. I am simply bummed about the fact that I started playing WoW shortly after launch with said names, would frequent the Armory after the Armory launched and notice that the names I had were unique and now notice they are not.

The reason could very well be that one person copied from me, someone copied from them and the snowball got bigger and bigger. However, I should probably mention that these names are not names that are two random terms from the dictionary like 'Healgasm' or Deathstrike. I'm referring to actual RP type names.

Seriously, look at it again, read it and see if you can understand it because I not only see no reason for you to shorten 'you' to 'u' or 'your' to 'ur' but I have no idea how someone can "take a serious condition." Small typographical errors are one thing, no one is perfect, but this is just...well, I just don't have enough words.

In any case, I've seend character names that I've created and found highly unique elsewhere when searching the interwebs so I can see where you're coming from. That said, the OP would do well to re-read the ToS/EULA and note that everything you make or do within the game world really is the property of Blizzard, likely stretching to what people name their characters. It's terribly unfortunate but all we really do receive is a license to play the game.

    I love irony.

I almost hate to agree because of the implications but I also have to agree the name I use on here for example is also my performance name has been since I started making music some seventeen years ago, I used it in WOW as well and never encountered another with that and my favorite girl toon name and all of a sudden when I checked the armory one day to show a friend what my toons looked like low and behold there was a Jaxsun everywhere on the armory so many in fact that I never even found my own toon.  So I think "well Jaxsun is a cool name"  but the girl name I can up with is such a mish mash of names there's no way that's going to be there but nope again I found tons of toons with her name as well again so many that it took me a few minutes sifting through til I found her.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Judging on what we know so far, you have 1 character named 'Guiness' and your forum handle here is 'Mercedes Owner'.

Right now, there is not a lot going in your favor to convince many that you have a large creative side to you that would produce multiple character names that many others wouldn't stumble upon without resorting to copy from your naming greatness.

Here is a test for you.  Go to www.google.com and type in your character name and see what happens.

My main toon has a common name, but my wife has a name that was a mix of her first name and maiden name and there's not another person with the same name on any server according to the armory.  So unless its somehow random, I don't think that the random name generator is "stealing" names.   She's had the same name on that toon for almost 4 years now.  What I think is more likely is that at any given time there are between 2-2.5 million U.S. players (or players playing on U.S. servers) and over the years there's been such a high level of churn (losing customers) and high level of getting new customers that there are likely literally tens of millions of toons across different servers.  There's bound to be several if not dozens of the same name for almost every name.

There's a good chance just 1 will come up with the same name out of the 100+ million characters that would of been created over the last 5 and a half years.

I go by the name of Cupertino on my server and about 3 years ago I was the only Cupertino on the EU servers. (didin't know at the time cupertino is a place in the US - I just could not spell Cappuccino and too lazy to look it up) there are now 12 of the buggers.  I have made a toon on another server ready for Cataclysm re-roll and used a different name. I am the ONLY SUPERTINO on the EU servers!!!

I am as rare as Vanillia Epic's baby!
