I got into LOTRO's Alpha in August, 8 months before release.  I am not sure what game the OP said hw played but LOTRO was a polished game 8 months before release.  It played much better than most games releases.  All the zones were not in yet.  But it was an amazing game for Alpha. The game played smoothly the quests were smooth, bugs were minimum and there was no lag whatsoever.  Given Turbine had already debuuged the client making DDO.  I can think of many games that would have loved to be as good as Alpha LOTRO was at release.  Cough Funcom would have kileld if AoC's release product was half as good as LOTRO's Alpha product.  But then again I doubt their release product will ever be that good.
