Why cant gaming companies come up with Kiddie Servers and Adult Servers... The main complaint I hear about WoW is the number of teenagers on the game. It pushes away the adults and then runes the game... Granted, I lost interest in the game when I found out that all of My Toons Gear was stollen while My account was inactive. If you asked Me, the problems with WoW account theft seem more like a hacker who had compromised their security.
Now I am in a "Family Oriented" game and I again find that it is mostly played by adults. So I cant use profanity, have topics of adult nature, or simply call someone a.... (well you get the idea)...
In the end, I just dont want to turn on VoIP, Vent, or whatever, and find some teeny booper yappin away!

Why? not all kids are immature and many adults are very immature, not to mention its impossible to have any sort of accurate age verification
Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling"
Sig typo fixed thanks to an observant stragen001.
I suppose because it would be hard to monitor and enforce. Kids would enter 21-35 channel to see whats going on and older players would join a 18-21 channel when they feel like debasing themselves for some good old fashioned childish tantrums.
Then there would be the predators, entering under 18 channels for god knows whatever gets their rocks off.
I think age defined channels, realms or servers are a bad idea. Simply because it would cause more problems than solve any.
True community in a mmorpg has to come from a different source.
Second Life supposedly has two different clients; one for adults and one for teens.
It's the ones for adults that should worry you.

You have to have a credit card to play this game... Anyone who would want have to opt in for this service...
Anyways, yes... Some Kids would join the Adult servers, but who cares... At least we wouldn't have to deal with 98% of them...
I never said MATURE, just Adult... if we wanted MATURE servers, we could simply call them "The Boring Servers"....
Maybe you can learn to just deal with them or ignore them and go on with the game... Just a suggestion.
The vast majority of Gamers are ADULTS (over 18)! Why is ignoring them if the problem is that adults talk about adult topics in different ways then children/teens do. Some of these conversations are inappropriate for children?

Children are the vast majority, I want them to be able to enjoy games, but I think parents, children and the average adult gamer should be able to choose what type of gaming they want to be in.
They have Servers for different languages, why not for different ages? I personally think this would work to help some games become more valid, however I don't know of a single game that has tried it.
Sometimes I'll take the kids please. At least I know where they stand.
Last thing I want to do is wonder into some unknown part of the game and have some tubby 40 year old cybering some GM.

Not all games require a credit card and as the mother of an UK boy knows kids can take your cc and use it for online stuff so cc verification for age is not a very valid way of verifying age. So verifying age is very hard and could be circumvented with ease.

Hello,
I think that I understand what you mean.. I find it the opposite really.. I am 27 and still play MMORPG's when time allows. When playing games you will often find adults talking about subjects that are most of the time unappropiate. A lot of cursing as they think it makes them cool, selfish just because they can... I do have to say that there are also a lot of nice people to spend your time with. Helpfull, polite etc. This is also to be found among the younger players.
So, I guess that it is something that bothers some people. WoW maybe has a lot of teenagers like any other game. One is more grown up than another not their fault. Maybe your getting to old for gaming...
It's much funnier with a bit of "theatre" behind it.

But I suspect there are some murky liability issues involved somewhere. So I'll be switching to games where at least an attempt is made to keep the kids from participating.

Honetly most adults i've met in games were just as pety as children, sometimes worse. Age doesn't seem to matter when it comes to maturity inside games.
It would be impossible to enforce. Just look at RP servers on most games, even the ones who enforce RP rules have a difficult time doing it.
I'll stick with my adults-only screenings of movies at a nearby theatre. You pay a little extra, but you're guranteed a little peace, the seats are extra nice, and they serve alcohol if that's your fancy. Of course they also have bouncers to make sure none of that alcohol gets to anyone's head. Kind of ironic when you think about the intent of the whole thing...
Fun has nothing with age
Let's assume for a moment that this is true. Then let's say that some random idiot in a game decides to piss me off. At least on an adult server, should I decide to be equally petty and sink to the idiot's level, I'm free to return fire with a four-letter-word-riddled work of art without worrying that I've just expanded the vocabulary of a snot-nosed ten year old. And at least when my female character has to peel some dry-humper with no life and too much imagination off her leg, it's an adult loser, and not a prepubescent one.

The absolute only time I've ever wanted an "Adult Only" server, was on Free Realms? I love the game, but that chat filter is absolutely horrible, it ruins the interaction completely. If they made an 18+ server and ditched the chat filter then I'd probably play the game a lot more.
As a response, I talk about adult topics, in an adult fashion. My Ideas of Appropriate are probably way different then what your ideas are. I honor and respect free speech, and to say that a video game company is responsibile for what their users say is like holding google (or MMORPG.com, or any other forum) on the internet responsible.
What I want is to have an Adult option for Me so that I can be assured that I am talking to Adults. If some irresponsible ADULT allows their child to enter an ADULT server, then it is upto that parent to allow for it. I am not purposing the creation of children only servers (as this would give a false sense of security), or even getting rid of the normal server's where use to today. Just that an option to allow Me to be ME, and to Enjoy the game I want to enjoy, how I want to enjoy it, having what ever social interactions I want to have.
You may not approve of what I have to say, you may not find what I say Mature or even Appropriate, but for me, that is what I enjoy socially. I pay money for a monthly subscription, because I enjoy a social environment. If I wanted to be in a world without this, I would not pay a monthly fee, and I would probably be playing allot of Bioware products (they are great!).
I cant sit here and accept the arguement "appropriate" and "mature" is a universally understood or accepted principle. For instance, why do we allow our children to watch unrealistic violence on TV and Video Games but Nudity, Sex, Love, etc are forbidden. We are on a forum that allows for detailed descriptions of how I killed you in some virtual world, but for me too say a 4 letter word would be reason for a slap on a hand.
I don't want to have this arguement with parents, game companies, or GM's, therefor I would prefer a non-censored environment allowed only too those who OPT into such a world.
One of the worst age groups for inane chatter and ridiculous /obnoxious behavior is the 18-25 bracket. I'd gladly share a server with kids and teenagers than deal with the large majority of college age people.
I wish there were servers where people have to score at least 120 on an IQ test and pass a spelling bee before even being able to enter the character creator.
But alas, these ideas always seem better when you're high in a basement with friends.
I kill other players because they're smarter than AI, sometimes.
I tend to agree with you, OP, as I'd like to know that the person chatting, talking, swearing, whatever, is over 18, better even if they're over 25!
I don't mind grouping/playing with younger than that, but I don't want a language filter or have to worry about my language, which can make sailors blush at times.
The best things, find a guild of like minded people and stay out of PUGS and out of trade type channels. My preference is a guild that doesn't allow under 18.
As for parents monitoring, too many do not know what their kids are doing and/or don't care. The availability of game cards too, makes the use of a CC not automatic either.

Yes I am all for an adult server? I would avoid that servers like the plague because thats where all immature players would flock too. Theres no way that your going to get only adults on the adult server. You tell someone they cant play on that server guess what? They will want to play on that server even more.

Although i generally play with a mature group of gamers, i always encouraged recruiting younger players.
I find children and teens interacting with adults vital to any social environment. overall i feel by letting the younger generations interact with the older ones vital to a persons development.( also teaches the adults that they where once kids to...some still are.) I suppose it was just how i was raised, being encouraged to discuss various topics with my parents helping me to develop and grow and within a game environment, especially an mmo, this interactivity teaches co-oporation as well as communication between players/guilds.
So as much as i see the pros for adult servers etc, i also think it isolates us more from our online community then we already are in real life as gamers.
Making so much noise you dont know when to listen.
As a fairly adult gamer (I remember the digital calculator as a no no in exams, that adult enough?) I see no need for adult servers, filters in forums and other things that put an age barrier in a game or whatever. All that stuff creates a false security on one side and only serves to protect "adults" who are too constricted to talk about socalled adult matters when kids are around. I was raised on the rule that if you understand what we're talking about , you're old enough, if you have questions ask them , if you don't react at all you're still too young so it won't register anyway.
The tone in the game chats has changed over the years , not much , but generally I'd say it has becomes less friendly. I know now for sure that anyone 1 level below me is a Noob, 1 level above me has no life , and anyone who disagrees with me is either Gay or has a very defective Mother but apart from that it's business as usual.
