Having your real name on the forum makes it easier to access your information from the database they already built up from REAL ID, they know who your friends are and what your playing habits are, your location and will now be able to follow your browser habits. Why do they need all this info?
I'm not falling for the 'better social world' story, this info is great for marketing and that is what it's really about. We are quite good at building our own communities thnx.
If I played WoW I'd opt out of Real ID, stay off the forums and tell them to keep their noses out of my business.
Its all meant to be a GOOD idea until someone dies from it.
Lets see who gets sued here.
People have already died because of WoW. You don't see Blizzard going bankrupt now do you?
I don't think anyone has died because of WoW. People have died because they did stupid shit like went 4 days without eating and sleeping but WoW didn't do that, they did.

On one hand, there are plenty of other sites where anonymous trolls can spew thier filth with zero consequnce. The new system seems like a valid way to deter that.
On the other hand, it almost seems as though the company is trying to deter negative feedback. The worst case scenerio though would be if someone was angry enough to actually hurt someone or their family. This would make it easier for them to do so, in my opinion.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
People are crazy. No way I would put my real name out on a forum. I can just imagine it now. You kill some whack job in game and they use your real name to find your job and start spamming stuff to your boss/co workers. Or finds your phone number and starts haraassing you. And then like the poster above me said there is no way in HELL I would EVER let me wife or GF put here real information out on a game forum, WAY to many nut cases.
Do you have a Facebook? Does your wife or gf have a Facebook?
I am friended with waitresses i've met at restaraunts on Facebook, and to them i'm just some random dude that buys coffee from them and tips decently.
Ever ask a girl for her number? Seriously if you keep yourself closeted you'll never meet all the really cool and friendly people out there.
Fear is the path to the darkside.
Yep, I have a facebook. The difference is I CHOOSE who sees my information and who doesn't. If a waitress you meet at a coffee shot thinks its a good idea to friend some guy she just met then that's her choice. However she can still use facebook and choose not to do this. However if you choose to use the blizzard forums you have no choice but to give up your real name to everyone. It would be like if you joined facebook and didn't have the option to not let EVERYONE see your information.
I get why they are doing it. I honestly do. However for me there are just to many crazy ass people out there.
That is one way to look at it. Consider Blizzards official forum closed, and the opening of a new Blizzard Gamers Exclusive social networking site. Where once you join everyone is your friend, but you can't post butt loads of pictures of your cat doing barrel rolls on the carpet.
The choice comes when you decide to participate on their forums or not. I honestly don't know anyone that uses those forums, everyone uses independent forums like mmo-champion or tentonhammer or none at all.
Its all meant to be a GOOD idea until someone dies from it.
Lets see who gets sued here.

Going with that drugs don't kill people.
They don't. If booze is what killed then that takes the blame off the person and puts it on a object. IE I drink a case of beer, get in my car and run of a 6 year old kid. Is it my fault or the booze?
Considering the local phone book has more information about me in it than my first and last name, I'm not too concerned.
Most people don't sit reading a phone book for 10 hours a day looking for someone to hurt. But if they are pissed off enough at you for what you are saying on a message board and crazy enough to do something about it, they will have your name sitting right there for them. Then they can go pick up the phone book.

We should legalize everything because it's the persons fault any way.

The question is, who judges what you need protection from, and what is your right as a person living their life on this planet.

You didn't answer my question. If i get drunk and run over a 6 year old is it my fault or the booze?
because its soooooo hard to use a fake "real name" right?
and i couldnt care less if my real name is posted anyways.. big deal. the only people who are afraid are people who are either babies or have something to hide.
on a seperate unrelated note why do people find it necessary to quote and quoted quote quote? its really freakin annoying having 1 message per page because the moron quoted whats been quoted 50 times over. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
You didn't answer my question. If i get drunk and run over a 6 year old is it my fault or the booze?
I didn't know you had to answer rhetorical questions. It's obviously your fault because you chose to get intoxicated. But at the same time you also chose to drive a car, effectively emitting CO2 into our atmosphere, killing the planet and everything that inhabits it. But that's not the only sinner, one could plonder about whether it's also the company's fault for producing beer which led to you being intoxicated. I could go down to South Africa and sell guns to children, but if they shoot each other it isn't my fault because they decide what they want to do with said guns <-- see the problem there?
My point was that you are correct, it isn't WoW's fault that people behave in a stupid way, but nevertheless WoW was the reason that, say some person killed another person because he didn't get the epic mount.
The best way to keep people safe is to assume that they are underdeveloped and then shape laws and products accordingly.

Regardless of whether someone sued them or not, the first time someone is injured as a result of someone else knowing their real name and tracking them down, the veritable sh!t storm Blizz will inevitably face in the public and press simply makes this one of the most bonehead decisions I've seen any company ever make.
Definitely going to be one of those "gee it sounded like such a good idea when we talked about it in the meeting room, and all those smart "mmo experts" working at all those mmo sites agreed".... now I'm looking for a new job" ideas.

It is your fault for getting behind the wheel on a substance and acting irresponsible and I used to think legal;izing everything was the answer but as i grow older and read more and think more about legalizing things I have changed my mind, legalizing drugs would give more idiots like this http://www.ehow.com/about_5082577_effects-smoking-marijuana-pregnant.html and this artickle blew me away http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/03/04/pot.kids/index.html remember who we are protecting when things are illegal for a reason, for every 1 of these idiots that gets caught doing this stuff theres probably 10 who dont get caught, but most people whom use drugs are selfish and only think of the consequences on themselves as I used to as well, but now that I have children I have come to the conclusion that drug users are selfish in the ideals they think of and fail to realize what will happen if ''there'' drug is legalized.
What I do in the comfort of my own home wearing fuzzy Marvin the Martian slippers is my own business. My identity has in no way publicly been associated with WoW or Blizzard in the past, and I expect it to stay that way. Wow/Startcraft/Warcraft are not facebook. I don't need nor want Blizzard's attempts to make me social.
Ah finaly blizzard forums will be a place I will now visit and contribute. - for the tin hat brigade there are loads of 3rd party sites to continue posting whine and nerf post such as here and mmo-champion. My name is David Cross.......... see the world did not end.
If you feel that someone knowing your name will mean it is no longer safe for you to leave your fortress you could always not post on the forums or just make a 2nd bnet account with fake details.
Good to see blizzard has the guts to do somthing like this. Now hurry up with phase 2 of SC2 beta BLIZZARD!

Just because you personally have not experienced something does not mean others have not. I have known quite a few myself that have came across individuals who would harassed them outside of the game because of information they had. Well now if someone has your name that will have access to it as well especially if you have a more unique name. Some are not living with parents, some are not college students. Some are actual working profressionals who play this game and through their job they may be listed if you simply google their name. You then get their work address and number.
In an experiment some players have taken a real name of someone on the forum, since he felt like you, and found out where he lived, got an image of his house, facebook and twitter accounts and found that he was a Jr. and who his siblings are.

I can only imagine the flurry of privacy lawyers flooding California courts to obtain C&D orders against this.

*shrug* As long as they aren't hurting me or my family, I see no harm in them doing busines. In fact I appreciate entrepreneurial ideas.

You are missing the point, People have died from Road Rage, what about WOW Rage. You get into some kind of altercation
with someone, they have access to your real name, BAM you could be dead. Dont say it cant happen. Wierder shit has
happened before.
No real ID for me. If it was just for my friends might be a different story or if someone asks for it different and i know them.
