Now think of all the nutty guys who will suddenly have this type of info on children 13-17yrs, and women who play the game. It's beyond stealing IDs and accounts. Just think how the Terminator found Sarah Conner - hello Bliznet!

Someone can just go to Myspace and find young people, lol can even pose as them downloading pictures from other myspaces, becoming a friend and have way more info on a person then there name.

Your argument is flawed. On myspace you can use false names without problem, there's no policy to post there with your real information. With Blizzard's measure people will be forced to use their real names if they want to post.

What Talindar showed was how easy it can be to retrieve other personal information that you don't want to share with only your first and last name. Another example in that humongous thread on the WoW-forums talked about a young woman who had experiences with a stalker from WoW, who had managed to find her address and phone number with only the first name, the city where she lived in and her job, all information she had mentioned in the course of months on vent. But that was all he needed to find her and stalk her.

Now will it go wrong for everyone that will post with their real names? Of course not, but what does happen is that Blizzard enforces a measure that will remove several layers of protection and privacy that you had, adding to the potential risk of things going wrong because of people who're intent to find out more about you for bad reasons.

The only way you can prevent that added public sharing of your personal information now is by not posting, even if you want/need to.

Besides that, there's the question how questionable this circumvention of Blizzard is of the privacy laws in several countries.

Another thing to think about is what if your account gets hacked and someone uses your identity to post racist or terrorist hate or threats against the president... Do you really want to have the possiblilty of the secret service on your front lawn? Blizz mods would have the ability to edit your posts imagine what a disgruntled mod could do to your post history if you don't check them on a regular basis.

    This.

Someone can get all this info in about 30 minutes or less. Free. From there, they can get your mother's maiden name and all sorts of juicy tidbits. Pay $5-$15 and they can get your SSN, DL,  tax history...etc.

Still think your safe? How many of you are or have ever belonged to guilds that have the infamous "Where are you from?", "RL pic thread" and/or "Get to know your Guildies!"  threads?  How many of those threads have restricted access to verified, approved members of the guild? Thought so.

Blizzard has stated that the forums is just ONE part of what they have planned for RealID. Now, while they have stated that the "social" networking will be up to the player and they have to approve a FR much like Facebook...who is to say that that someone won't lie claiming to be someone else? Then Pedo person has knowledge of ALL the games you play with Blizzard and ALL of your characters.

Granted, this is a "what if," but, that is the whole point.

Yeah, Blizzard could kill most WoW players familes, and they would come back to an expansion.  I don't see how people can stand to let a company pussy whip them. lol

    Oh yeah man, it does.

The idea is that with that level of accountability, people will troll less. They’re right, of course, but only if by “troll” you mean “post”.

    From that link.

Basically posting trolls might go down, but malicious address seeking trolls are in data heaven.  Think of all the ripe pickings for the pedos...  Man Dateline better be ready to work both shifts and then some on this one. LMAO

As for Blizzard employees, they have now said that they will not be using "RealID."

I don't understand why everything else is voluntary and then this aspect is not?

Is it really hard to make it so that your Real ID friends can see your real life name in the forums, but not just any demented pervert on the internet can see them?

To those who can't see how this is a very bad thing, think about it harder.

It only took him 20 minutes to do all that imagine what someone disturbed could do with infinite time and determination. The scenerio I laid out earlier isn't very far fetched.

    Oh yeah...

So basically what is Blizzard getting at when they say RealID isn't safe for them, but force it on the near 12million subscribers?

Cannot see how this doesn't add up for some people...

Even better. A girl managed to get stalked by a WoW fan merely by mentioning her first name, the town she lived in and the job she had, things she'd revealed in the course of months on vent. From this information alone her stalker found out her address and phone number and started his obsession.

Ah, you big tease, you want to be found, admit it image ok, what are you wearing now?

In fact though, you already disproved your point in 1 way: you disclosed your name voluntarily, the real name disclosure on the WoW forums will be enforced.

Never mind, I think I found one source (but if you have other links, feel free to share):

    http://www.wow.com/2010/07/07/rumor-blizzard-employees-real-life-names-will-not-appear-on-th/

Interesting in that news item was this:

Bashiok / Drysc posted his real life name yesterday, and had his privacy violated by people posting maps to his house, his parents' names, and (potentially incorrect) cell phone numbers.

The news item also says that blues not posting with real names appear to be an internal communication error, a misunderstanding. As for now they will be using their real names.

Teala, you should go through and remove what radio station you're listening to from your DeviantArt profile. After finding your name, your age on your IGN profile (1977ish), and then finding the radio station in Chico, CA you're tuned in, the search results I'm looking for are rather narrow. People also enter your information into things like Classmates.com and other databases you don't even know exist that help me find the final result once I get keyed into the location I'm looking for the individual at.

Let me know if you want a copy of the information I was able to compile together through 15 minutes of using nothing but standard searches. Information available to anyone, for free. I'll reassure you I'm not psycho, but it's a shame I have to do that, isn't it?

False, although WoW players would hardly be the targets of a true hacker alot can be done with a first and last name. It's quite scary actually, google it sometime ;)

Giving real information over the internet has always been the biggest NO NO and now WoW is going to do it for 11 million people.  I know hacker sites are getting ready to take full advanage of these easy targets.

How are they going to hack you with just knowing your real name? They don't know your email....password....or authenticator? I'm not calling you out I just really don't see how this could happen, I'm not even sure how they would go about doing it without getting inside blizzards site with mod privileges.

I'm really sorry but there are 6 billion people on this planet and nobody really has a 'unique' name. Now if a person decided to google you and find your facebook (after going through 500 other people with your same name) and it has all the information about you on it then that is your fault for putting it out there not blizzards.

I could give out my real name right now and I bet not one of you besides the admin on this forum could find out what my email address is, or my phone number, or my real location.  I think MMORPG.com should also use our real names :P clean this place up a bit.

It really just seems like if it isn't out of fear from hacking then it is out of fear that someone has to actually be courteous to another human instead of sarcastic and rude.

It is ture that this decision by Act / Bliz is far reaching.  There talking / poll about it even on the Tera forum site :

    by CD BrotherMagneto

You may have heard that other game companies are going to begin instituting a policy that requires people who post on their forums to display their real names with their posts.

I'd love to hear you guys' thoughts on this policy. Poll above, comments below!

Edit: I want to make very clear that we're not even considering implementing this here, so don't worry about that. Just in case anyone got the wrong idea. I'm more curious about you guys' opinions than anything else!

I think I posted it earlier but years ago we had a nut on here who was an actual game dev who went after posters on this very site by hiring detectives from a poker site. They tracked the people down and everything it was a very famous event for this site.  You have no clue how bad of an idea it would be if they used real names here like the way wow is intending.
