Rift: Planes of Telara: Asha Catari - The Rift Walker

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

In the latest developer journal from the Rift: Planes of Telara team, Rift Walker Asha Catari is profiled. Asha is the founder of the Defiants faction and has a fascinating story behind her. Read on!

Artifacts exist of a flourishing city-state known as Catari, dating back to the Eth Empire. Though the empire fell, the family line of the state’s sorcerer lords endured, continuing to produce some of the finest mages of Telara. The sisters Aurum and Asha Catari proved no exception to this tradition. The pair distinguished themselves among the pupils of Quicksilver College, though in very different ways. Aurum was the shining star of the academy, always performing to task and beyond standards of excellence. Asha, the younger sister, was just as gifted, but chafed under stringent curriculum of the college, questioning the effectiveness of century old methodologies. She was expelled in her third year for pursuing the arts of the warlock, a subject forbidden at the school. The scandal caused her father, Theo Catari, the representative of the southern races and High Mage in the court of Mathos, to disown her.

Read the lore behind Asha Catari.

Rift walker? Seriusly? I'm starting to think that good ol' Kevin Siembieda may have really been on to something.

    Cool story.

story is ok, not a "huge" fan of lore, but this game is one that has kind of pulled me into it.

in regards to Methos, I find rift walker to flow off the tongue comfortably, I think it sounds about right.

Great article... I love the lore of this game.

For the record,  Rifts the pen n paper rpg had Lay Line Walkers, not  a Rift Walker.

Kevin is an ego-centric ass.  He had the balls to try and sue Todd McFarlaine over use of the name Spawn, for crying out loud.  Lost that battle, too.  Had to change the name of HIS game.  LOL.  Palladium Books isn't nearly as cool as he thinks they are.  And as pointed out, the OCC was Ley Line Walker, not Rift Walker.  Kevin has no claim on any of it.  Next he'll try to sue WotC because they have Dragons in DND4.

The Palladium Fantasy RPG wasn't even under the RIFTS title and was a blatant rip off of H.P lovecraft, Robert.E.Howard and Tolkien.   He's just a bitter old fool that couldn't out shine Gygax and Arneson.

You know what I meant. It's like they're really messing with him now that he can't do anything about it. :D

The case was thrown out in Michigan for reasons of jurisdiction. Trion then sued Palladium in California, and they're waiting for their day in court on September 10. The whole story, with reactions from a Palladium freelancer, can be found here:

Dracondis you got the case completely wrong. Palladium Books brought out a game line called Nightspawn. Todd McFarlane then threaten to sue over the use of the word Spawn. Palladium Books decided not to spend money on the lawsuit and changed the name of the game line to Nightbane.

You don't say so? Sound like a ley line walker to me and the whole game sounds a lot like Palladium.

I hope Kevins lawsuit wins, not that I am against the idea of a Palladium MMO but they should pay license rights and use all the lore then, not just steal all the good parts.

And this isn't just like everyone who steals from Tolkien, Tolkien himself stole a lot of his ideas from Norse mythology while Kevin spent his life work creating his own stuff (even though he also borrowed from the worlds ancient religions.

This is actually stealing everything including the name, it would be like someone created a MMO called "Middle earth" or "Hyborea" without license rights.

I don't mind TERA at all but there is a limit to how much you can steal others ideas and this is past it.

Loke666, you are way off base on this one man. An honest review of what has been released for this game so far will quickly show that Trion isn't stealing "everything" from Siembieda. Far from it. Kevin stole just as much from other cultures and such to make his game. He's no angel that in his case he's only borrowing but everyone else is stealing.

Anyway, at this moment there is no lawsuit, in case you hadn't heard. Judge threw it out. There may be one attempted again once Rift:PoT goes live but it will most likely go the way of the dodo like this first one.

Either way, I've had a close look at all of the latest release games. None of them in their release versions come close to comparing to the level of polish this one has in it's alpha. I don't give a flying flip what they call it as long as they release a polished, fun MMO.

I think it's very cool that they are working on getting some story into this game, and finding a way to make that part of the player experience.  Dark creepy forests and demons are awesome, but it needs story to make it dark fantasy.

Thanks. I suspected that would happen.  Rift looks like a great game, it will be interesting to see how it turns out at launch.

This boring story is only made more interesting by the lawsuit.  I hate reading lore for games, I thought this was gonna be real.
