New Expansion review from Gamespot: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/ageofconanriseofthegodslayer/review.html
snippet:
"Unusually, Funcom did not increase the level cap in Rise of the Godslayer but rather instituted a clever alternate advancement system. This is a supplementary tree in which you spend points earned in player-versus-environment and player-versus-player combat on both passive and active enhancements. And if you aren't playing as often as your guildmates, you can choose instead to unlock these feats and perks in real time, a la EVE Online. The trick is that you can only have so many of these enhancements active at once. The limited slots may remind you of the similar setup in Guild Wars, though Age of Conan's system, while flexible, doesn't feature Guild Wars' extreme adaptability. Nevertheless, it's an intriguing way of letting players adapt their characters as they further flesh out their roles in the world (and in their guilds). Just be prepared: It takes a lot of time to earn just one feat. You may initially lament the kind of investment the system requires for you to get the most out of it, but if you're in for the long haul, the perks are a fair reward for your time.
Age of Conan seems to have left behind the majority of its technical woes, though we did encounter various glitches, most of them relatively minor. Getting caught in an inescapable crevasse is an annoyance but is normally an easy fix with the /stuck command. On two occasions, however, we had our mount remain underneath our avatar even after dismissing it, which resulted in a hysterical sequence in which the character ran not along the ground but along the horse's back. (Logging out and logging back in was the only cure for this particular bug.) Fortunately, Rise of the Godslayer is a stable expansion, which means you can enjoy its solid quests and idyllic environs without many technical struggles. And these new areas are well worth investigating, whether you've traversed Kylikki's Crypt a few dozen times or have never so much as heard of the Fields of the Dead. And if stability issues and early content gaps caused you to turn away from the original Age of Conan, Rise of the Godslayer is a great reason to revisit this blood-soaked world."

Pretty fair review and one where they did take the time to play.

Btw, this is the same Gamespot that evaluated the original AoC with 8.5 score. And I truly adored their profound conclusion - "it has potential to become the best MMO". 'Nuff said!

Finally, we can see the nipples on that dancing girl with full anti-aliasing from halfway across the map. Bliss.

Here's a whopping 8.6 delivered by Now Gamer. Unfortunately given the above quote you can see the mentality of the arsehole who wrote it.

Hehe, you people are just way too funny. God, it must aggravate you to see such reviews since it doesn't fit your opinion of AoC.
So, what's the idea: 'I hate or throughly dislike AoC, so the reviews that say it's good have no credibility, so let's start to disbelief ANY review that has been published about any game, they're all worthless - as long as they don't fit my grudge or dislike'
Lol. Show some sense for a change, people. You hate or dislike something, ok. Doesn't mean that everyone that has a different opinion or any article or review that doesn't fit your view of a game is suddenly worthless. But, feel free to satisfy your neverending grudges, hates and dislikes all you like. Me, I'm gonna go out and relax in the sun and chill. Good luck.

Nice find Avery! I myself came back to AoC with RotGS along with some rl friends and we are having a blast over on Wiccana (think I spelled it correctly). We have encountered very few bugs (all of which were minor) and have found the community very helpful. I recommend this game to anyone who wants a more intense combat medieval low fantasy mmo to try the unlimited tortage trial.
@Cyphers you know a recent article stated that the majority of those who come to the internet to bash/troll/flame etc... are typically disgruntled teens-early twenties who in real life tend to have been, or currently are, victims of abuse (verbal/emotional/physical). So don't mind them. They are just continuing the cycle in a format that they perceive as anonymous and safe.
Cheers!
MMO Vet since AOL Neverwinter Nights circa 1992. My MMO beat up your MMO. =S
Gamespots review isn't going to bring back the horde of people who returned and then quit again after the Expac was released. The game has it's good points true, but it is not a solid product that can retain a solid population.
That's not very nice, shame on you.

And that is nice? ^^^^^
Source ?
That looks remarkably like, "sources close to....", "an insider said....", "according to a former employee who wishes to remain anonymous.." etc.
If you want to start making statements such as above. Quote your source. Otherwise you just come across as some idiot who is making things up to support his own skewed view. You are not dealing with wow kiddies here mate. Some of us have had a formidable education.

GG on that gross simplification and generalization. People who hate AoC are angst-ridden teenagers. It even surprises me you bother to read such trash. Care to link that profound article?
I do agree with your protest, but why act prejudiced when fighting prejudice and generalization? I've seen more people with PhDs in WOW than in any other MMO. Actually, one of my guilds was practically teeming with them - the guild chat was quite fun.
Wow, great news. When will Funcom be opening the new servers to accomodate the tons of returning players? Where are the posts about people complaing about queues to get into the game? Where is a link to where it is blowing away the sales records? Of wait... that is a different game.
Gaming site reviews are unimportant, since they rarely do anything drastic. All games get between an 8 and 9.5 and the reviews talk about features that haven't been fully explored. For instance, this review is out already, which means it was written a few weeks ago.. probably within a month of the expansion going live. it's really very similar to that game that only let players beta test and reviewers review the first 20 levels which were polished, but the review never covered the weeks after players got past level 20.. what was the name of that game that was drastically unfinished after lvl 20, but allowed reviewers to only play the part that was finished?
The lack of servers, sales or returning players speaks for the success of this expansion, not someone's 3 week game experience.
Couldn't have said it better myself, good post.
# 1 "review in progress" Jun 11th 40 hours already spent in game - This is one month after Godslayer Release.
# 2 Final review posted July 7th is that not nearly 2 months after the release of Godslayer?
# 3 Factually spent 40hrs in the first month, assuming the same for the second or say another 30hrs, totally 70hrs of written opinion is quite a long time.
# 4 Correct me if I am wrong but that is 4 times the amount of in game experience you have not had
# 5 Score is irrelevent, read the actual pro's and con's and comment on that.
# 6 review is based on post launch and not some beta limited time as you guess
# 7 New servers has no bearance on the fun factor a person would have in game, there are plenty of people in game having no issues grouping or with population. 10 trial to try free at the moment..
# 8 Sales of the game have yet to be detirmined but it was up high on Amazon during launch week and there were posts floating around about it. Same about people enjoying it - check mmorpg.com review comments.
# 9 Seems you are out of touch in in-game experience and totally missed the reviewer had spent 2 whole months give a few days in the post launch retail game gathering opinons. You just focused on the score and not the content written.
# 10 Popularity does not equal awesome game - see WoW for example
Yes Solarine, generalisations as such can be offensive. I apologise if you feel that way. That was not my intention. I used the term more in the sense of how it may soon be defined in the urban dictionary. Alluding to that type of wow player, rather than an intentional encompassing of them all.
Incidentally some AoC players also have PhD's. ^^

I'd bet my mortgage on players from Fury and Tyranny with several hundreds of hours gaming time behind them disagreeing with the sugar coated drivel of this review. That expansion was a nice addition to the pve game. It did NOTHING for the pvp game.
Except open up many new avenues in which people could exploit the black hell out of instances. Leaving honest players a year or more normal playtime behind. Avenues which were left open so long that the damage was done (again) before Funcom reacted with some cursory 7 day bans with no rollbacks.
RoTGS - come cheat like a bastard. We don't care. We like your subs. This is the message Funcom delivered. So for pve. Maybe it was a nice expansion. For pvp, it was yet another punch in the tits. Utter fail in my opinion.
Tranca [RUS corp]
Fair enough from a PvE expansion, but was not the expansion talked about in this way so you knew what was coming, what to expect. Godslayer was never marketed as a full on PVP expac. I think we can all agree from the dev diary, from the Q&A's from the convention reports and interviews the only real PvP part was the seperate section for AA related. Naturally that would come across as fail to someone who just plays for PVP but it was definately not something unexpected.
Exploits aside yes there was about a weeks worth of dmg done between patches. A year out of pocket for a week is a big on the extreme exaggeration side, something that most PVP'rs or fisherman like to do. Personally speaking I have done the experience to get the AA, I have done the 72hrs of faction stuff to get to faction level 4 and although frustrating is not the end of the world in the grand scheme of things. Especially being quoted as the most social of games from the same people making the same statements over and over.
I can definately agree that PVP needs a look in, something special added.
I was about to post something (imo, probaly failed) witty about this claim, but lets face it... At this point perhaps 0.05% of prospective AoC customers may actually give a damn about the game, make that * 0.01 with your "amazing" article.
Cyphers seem like an ok (although posting activity suggests he needs to find an interesting game) sort of guy - Post link or I am sure he is doing a lot better without your "help".
OT: Nice review. Does sound a little 'purple glass tinted' but if it does help out AoC with a few more subs then its good
(Yeah - I actually think AoC deserves to do better now compared to last year.)
We dont need casuals in our games!!! Errm... Well we DO need casuals to fund and populate our games - But the games should be all about "hardcore" because: We dont need casuals in our games!!!
(repeat ad infinitum)
2 Months in game is not enough time to be worn down, when one gets to 80 and tries to mini game, runs into premade mini teams filled with players full of pvp 8-10 gear yeah that starts to wear you down.
When you know players out there in mega guilds that control the shrines of Bori are maxing out their AA and getting pvp 8-10 gear with no pvp experience
When players openly exploit and funcom does not crack down on them
When sieges have not been working properly since release
When funcom adds a ton of new items but does not expand storage space
When crashes rule the day when you zone into the Northern Grasslands
When balancing classes means creating a FTM class (see ranger revamp and sin revamp)
When bugs that have been in since launch are still here
Exploits aside yes there was about a weeks worth of dmg done between patches. A year out of pocket for a week is a big on the extreme exaggeration side, something that most PVP'rs or fisherman like to do. - AmazingAvery
You are 100% wrong. There are people on Fury server who MAXED out their mastery AA's. Yes MAXED them out. Such was the lunacy of the available exploits. I realise that to an npc basher on a pve server AA's don't mean squat in the grand scheme of things. But for pvp they make a HUGE difference.
That was the final straw for me, when it became clear that Funcom were more interested in retaining subs than punishing those who cheated. They had the data, they had the capability to do so as they done it before with pvp exploiters. Even a trained chimp could write a query that would pull that data. This time they refused to do it, and people walked away.

I stopped trusting Gamespot reviews years ago.
Like I said I understand being an Advocate and "tester" I understand the functionality, time vs reward and length in obtaining AA in Godslayer, working with the developers themselves. Assuming I just like PvE is a cop out. But then again if Godslayer was just a PvE expansion why care about AA... Obviously it was not. What you are essentially saying is even though Godslayer was promoted as a PvE majority expansion the portions than encompass PVP make a "HUGE difference".
What got up your nose is that for a week portions of your server community exploited and went unpunished and furthermore official comments were a whimper to nothing, right?
In addition you would of liked to have seen a heavier presence in PVP in the expansion regardles.
Both points left you frustrated.
If my assumptions are correct then I can totally agree with you, ok.
But backing up a bit, it is of my opinion, through experience, that maxing out all AA takes time but not a lifetime. Same goes for faction levels. The reviewer for Gamespot hints on taming pets which we know takes some time to do. Therefore it was quite a hands on review in terms of experience had. At the same time it lacks in my opinion due to the lack of PvP talk/testing/experience.
We are talking about the expansion and a review on the expansion "Content".
So from your list I recommend a forum search of the word "Banned" and list in order of date as some people were 'cracked down on".
Bank space is a good point.
N. Grasslands had issues but is pretty limited in numbers now.
Remember this topic is a discussion on the review of the expansion and not half the things you bring up.
AOC is one of only a handful of games worth subbing on and off, esspecially with the free level every 4 days you stay subbed. Like it or not the expansion was good and the game is pretty solid for what's available in the MMO market right now.
