Yet another which PC should I get Thread ...

mach10mach10 Member UncommonPosts: 30

Well, it's about that time, and I apologize in advance for starting one of these but I'm a little torn on which PC I should get...

I used to build PC's back in the day but now I just don't have the time anymore, so after some soul searching, these are the two that peaked my interest.

Word of advice...anything pre-built; especially if you're serious about gaming, and running Final Fantasy XIV at the best possible settings are junk, you need to build a custom PC!  Not only is it far cheaper, but its super easy, worth every penny and you get to pick out each quality part, unlike the low-grade BS in pre-builds...

    Newegg.......FTW!

Seriously, Ignore the thread above me, pre builts dont have to be junk for smegs sake and in alot of cases they can be very resonably priced.

I built my pc's and have for years, also owned a shop but I look around now and see places like overclockers and such and the price they can make a sweet working pc for is not aot of diff than making it myself.

Also alot of online shops like clockers allow you to customised your purchase even tho it may be already set..

Either machine is good and is a prefference for what chip you like, I always go Intel but thats just my choice.

    Even more important,

Don't build your own system if you don't exactly know what you're doing. I have seen to many help threads all over the internet on this topic.  You just can't cram all components together in a box and expect it to be working just fine,,  There are to many known issues about graphics/MB/Memmory combinations just not working  as expected resulting in unexpected crashes, unbootable systems or even BSD's.

These people are as you said much better off buying a customized prebuild system

If you're going to play this game, make sure you have Windows 7-get my drift?

The NCIX one, spent over $7000 there in the past 3 years, you will get better support than Future Shop and the PC will be put together better.

Do yourself a HUGE favor and never buy a PC from Futureshop.  If by some fit of bad luck your system should be defective, they'll have you jumping through hoops for your repairs or replacement (that and they practically harrass you into buying some useless 200$ guarantee).

I just purchased my parts yet again from NCIX and I can attest to their professionalism. With that said, I do consider the system you listed a little too pricey.  Building your own (or having someone reliable doing it for you) will have you saving a few hundred dollars easy.

The NCIX one definitely gets my vote between the two. Better motherboard, much better expansion slots and general upgradability, better video card, better PSU, native USB 3.0 and SATA6 support, and you never know, the extra two CPU cores might be useful someday. And since you had several choices, I'm guessing the look of the Antec 1200 appeals to you. And since it uses standard DIY components, if something goes wrong in the future, you may have a decent shake at forum troubleshooting.

All the FS model is offering is a slightly stronger CPU, more RAM than you'll ever need unless you get into video editting or virtualization, and a crappy optical mouse. And of course, you get Future Shop's long and sordid history of tech center bullshitting if the time comes to make any warranty claims.

That said, I'd at least spec the Arctic Cooling heatsink for the CPU - given the right circumstances, those 6-cores can put out a decent amount of heat.

That the means of progression would not be mutually exclusive from the means of enjoyment.

  • NCIX one has a better graphics card and is even a little cheaper. I would get that.
