How important is my Racial choice..

Lord.BachusLord.Bachus Member RarePosts: 9,686

Will the choice of a race be mainly cosmetical by the time i reach endgame, or will in endgame certain races clearly excell at certain disciplines?

(Maybe endgame is not the correct word, i should maybe have used max level)

It is not nearly as important.  In XI your race had predefined stats from start to finish.  A Taru had less tank stats than a Galka from start to finish.  Elves had the most STR.  Mithra had the the best thief stats.  In XIV they have different stats at the start but every time you level you place the stats how you want.  This means that you can define any race how you want with stats.

It is important though because you have 1 char slot and you will be stuck with your char for a very long time so you want to pick a race you'll be happy with for a long time.

    Hellsguard

    Hellsguard

    Roegadyn

    Edit

    Description

The Hellsguard are a clan of Roegadyn with body and mind tempered by the unforgiving heat of the volcanic regions they inhabit. Believing these mountains of flame to be gates to the underworld, their line has for centuries stood vigil over them to prevent the passage of souls back to the realm of the living. Their sheer girth and steely demeanor open to the Hellsguard a wide range of paths, from the martial to the monastic.

Well i plan on playing a Hellsguard Monk heavilly intoo magic and traveling the world i search of Knowledge... Not to serious but more of a combination between friar tuck and Elminster...  On the surface he should serve as a councelor to the rulers of the world and others that seek his council.  He also has a dark side, but i don't wanna share anything about that part yet.

Just hope i want be kept back to much stat wise by the race.

Actually most races were pretty well balanced in most jobs in FF11 for example

A Taru lacks vit but still made a good nin tank and cause of bigger mp pool a good pld as well the way to play it was different than say a Galka or Elven pld but worked just as good.

Now while an Elvan had low mp did he still make an outstanding whm since its MND and VIT was very high so his whm spells were more powerful than others.

So even tho some races seemed to lack the ability's to play a job as good as another race didn't it really matter that much in the end and the wide choices of stat enchanting equipment made it even less important

(ok maybe there was like 1 job for each race where they really didnt do that good of a job thinking of an Elvan blm or Galka whm  while a Taru war was prolly the weakest war around etc.)

So judging from the experience in FF11 and the announcement from SE that the choice of the Race wouldn't have that big of an impact that it had in 11 would i guess it doesn't matter at all what u play

Well if you want to play a Hellsguard mage then if anything you'll get bonuses to your magical stats. Seawolf on the other hand will probably get bonuses to physical stats if any.

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

    Thats what figured...

Seems like the lore behind hte Hellsguard could be very interesting too...  Many hooks for roleplaying i'd say

was thinking of hyur highlanders myself

bigger bodies and darker skin than  midlanders

their lore is intersting too :  mercenaries with destroyed homeland  and having no women is a plus :P

That's my understanding too, so I would pick a race for aesthetic and lore reasons.

The sentiment I have been reading on other sites is that the races will be virtually interchangable jobwise, and the differences between races will be almost entirely cosmetic. I'm sorta hoping this isnt entirely true. I'm all for flexibility when it comes to race/job combos. However, it strikes me if you make the different races too similiar, then you are really just looking at one race, with different skins.

So, let's say I level up to the cap as a caster/healer and build all of my stats for that like a good healer should. (high mnd w/e) If I get bored with that have have a change of heart and want to start tanking, am I boned?

They've implemented a respec system that allows you to redistribute your stats to suit different roles. I don't know the details of how it works but from what I've heard the only limitation on it at the moment is a time limit on how often you can change them. I imagine it's still being balanced.

Edit: There are some racial stat differences but the nature of the stat distribution systems allows players to compensate for those differences as desired. From the sounds of it I expect it will have a limited affect on the early game but later on it will be unnoticable.

    Ah okay, that makes sense.
