Hype is good, but not when it comes a year before release. Ultimately they are hurting themselves because by the time the game actually comes out it is old news.
Not only is it hype, but i believe a lot of it has to do with funding. If i am paying someone to make a game, and i already know that development times are extremely long, i want at least some assurance that there will be some sort of player base at launch. If the game never gets shown to the public, and i could have cut my loses because no one would have liked it from day one, than as a company i would. This is more a business now than ever before, and trying to maximize profits and minimize loses is at the forefront of most developers minds.
