How many quests in FFXIV?

When you solo, can you do endless quests like in WoW, or do you have to grind?

It's in beta and under NDA. Nobody will be able to answer that. In interviews they've stated numerous times that they want the game to be solo/casual friendly. I take that to mean it will be full of quests.

If you are a casual player, you don't really have to "grind" mobs and can probably advance by just doing the quests (that if you have 1-2h of playtime a day).

If you have more time than that, teaming up with others, whether it be 2 people or 15, will be the best way to advance. Soloers be grindin'.

Soloing in this game is really just for the very casual people who clearly don't have enough time to group.

Or that's how I've interpreted it, hehe.

    Guildleves are your main source of quests, SE said they didn't want to repeat the process of having players running all over looking for quests by randomly talking to various NPC, and didn't like the idea of putting ! & ? over their heads as it does look very gaudy.  {From what I've heard you can do some 3 guildleves per every 48hrs, but you can also team up with others and join them on theirs and reap a little reward for helping too.}

Thus the Guildleves were born, but since there appears to be a Guild for every class, I wouldn't be surprised to see addional quests pop up on occassion of varying class related tasks...my theory.

Guildleves are like "go here and kill 10 rats" and there is nothing else to do, not even PVP.

    Obvious troll is obvious...

I personally and most people I talk to that are looking forward to FFXIV dont want pvp, or a game that tries to do pvp in a pve game because of how the game has to alter itself to balance rather then fun and diversity, I want a true pve focused game, wich is the reason I play mmo's in the first place.

Now if you want pvp there are other games you can play and the absence of an element in a game that you personally want does not take away everything else that is in the game.

There is a ton more to it than that, for instance:

To get those 10 rats to appear you may have to fulfill other objectives like killing something else to make them appear, and sometimes its not just one at a time, or they're not just standing there waiting for ya to come twack them.  Several may appear at the same time, and aggro making it more challenging.  Or any number of other triggers, like the Land and Hand classes may require you have a particular item you crafted or harvester to complete it...the possibilities are quite enthralling!

Or as seen in the E3 videos of the crabs running away after you killed one forcing you to run after them a great distance, through multiple cooridors filled with other mobs, and while none of the other mobs aggroed in that particular demonstration its possible they we're turned off, or not at all for that one, but could be for others.  So there is the possibility that sure you have 30min to kill 5 crabs, but when they run by and hide behind other mobs you must kill or find other means to get by, then that time limit becomes more difficult to complete in, and adds more spice and entertainment to said Guildleve.  Then you have to worry about do you have the ability on said class to get by or unlocked prior and equipped, and if not, then the challenge has become greater.

Knowing SE and the huge variety of ways mobs aggro, not just proximity, and the hint at a food-chain aggro system too as-well-as mobs teaming up together and forming parties of their own and hunting down players ~ plus the multitude of events and BCNMs and other activities...later on oppossed to the early Guildleves killing those 10 rats, may be quite difficult, yet different and fun.

    Successful troll is successful.

He's wrong, but meh.. isn't that obvious?

And those that choose to believe him, lol.. who cares.

    omg Khrymson, so funny.

kill 10 rats in ways you cant imagine in your wildest dreams :)

    wait, are you serious? :)

I dont mind "kill 10 whatever" quests, as long as there are quests. I want any quests. I hate grinding.

There isn't a ton more to it than that. In the first few leves, you kill 4-6 X. That's that.

In some quests when I killed 2 nearby mobs, 1 more pops and aggroes me. Once I killed that one, 2 more popped where the last one died and I had to kill them too. I survived with like 10hp.

But that's as complex as the first leves go. They didn't really need to be any harder, especially when I got cocky and tried it solo with 3 star difficulty >_>.

I am sure you wont notice the grind in the beginning, later when you get your skills higher is when it will hurt. I think this game will be another Aion all over.  I knew Aion will be like that and fanbois were on denial. Months laters they came back QQing about the grind.

I may be wrong, maybe this game will have a lot of quests, but I prefer to wait for reviews after the game releases. I would wait at least 1 month after release. I am done witht he hype.

This is indeed the best approach to take.

Quests are what they are. I certainly hope they don't over do it. I quite enjoyed putting together a group of 6 people and grinding experience points in FFXI. That was way more fun for me than running repeatable solo quests in AoC for example..

Not if you live and breath FFXIV.... then one month wait is a month lost.

There are 10 quest, that it. End of Story.

So buy the game do the 10 quest and leave.

I personnaly am not here just to do the quest but to enjoy what I lost when I left FFXI to play WoW. As well as a great world to play in and do things.

For those that want a WoW clone you are in the wrong place, while I am sure they did some stuff that could be concidered WoW like FFXI came out before WoW so it was probably already done there. Now I think I read somewhere that there are 8 guildleve's you can do in a 48hr setting, so if you do 4 a day your good, and if you guys are correct about the unpredictability of the leve's and what the interviews have pointed out, the quest should be really interesting.

Of course, I know when someone is trolling, and its ridiculous to waste my time acknowledging them and calling them so.  That isn't going to stop me from still answering the question for others that read these boards, and offering up my description and imigination based on everything we know thus far.  And how things work in XI and how they can be applied to this new system is quite intriguing...

I personally hope they still have important npcs in each city that gives quests. Like the Onion Brigade in Windy in FFXI. Those tarus were awesome and the cutscenes for each quest were great! I hope they don't do away with this type of quest.
