Weapons/skills variety?

Never really been able to get any decent info on this:

They've showed us the basic 8 or so classes with supportuing guilds and some of their abilities (excluding harvesters/crafters) but just how much variety will there be in building our characters and choosing skills?

One thing i've noticed is i've yet to see in any screenshots a character with a 2h sword/greatsword, just Greataxes (yuck) which is what sparked my curiousity on this.

Looking at screenshots of the skill menu you can see tabs for weapon types including fists, 1h sword, lance, bow and such, but overall theres not much to choose from just looking at that. (though it does look like theirs room for more tabs)

I'm guessing thats just the selection for beta testing? Can we expect the released version of the game to have more variety in weapons/spell lines to spec in?

Edit:: ooooo now that i think on it, think we'll be able to spec characters to say, specialize a warrior into something of a berserker or Paladin? Or a spellcaster into a Necromancers of sorts?

As i understand you'll be able to mix skills depending on your gear to an extent, but just what kind of skills are gonna be available to spec in beyond different attacks for different weapon types?

You will be able to mix and match skills from different classes to fit your tastes but as for the g-sword no one really knows yet.

Hehe yea on the greatsword thing thats just my personal thing, I suffer from giant fucking sword syndrome :P

But i am wondering if their will be a wide variety of weapons like ffxi had, scythes, katanas, instruments and such.

If not hopefully (probably) it'll be in expansions later.

Thanks to data minners it's already pretty much been confirmed that there are at least three unrealeased classes so far. A Fencer that uses rapiers, Musketeer that uses guns, and a Mystic?? But that's all unofficial information. I'm sure they will release more classes/weapons in the future as well.

FFXIV has been confirmed to have every weapon type from FFXI I believe (Hyanmen can correct me on that if I'm wrong, hehe) including scythes, katanas and greatswords. We know that there are plans for many more classes than have currently been announced, although it is unlikely that all of them will make it for release.

What no one knows is what classes will make use of what weapons beyond the basics. Marauders may not be axe based but simply two handed weapon based, in which case they could cover greatswords, katanas and scythes. Personally I think that's unlikely though as katanas as scythes were trademark weapons in FFXI and I expect to see them as independent classes in XIV.

There are somewhat substantiated rumours of new weapon types as well if you look around a bit. ;)

Oh derp, now that you mention it googling it seems to confirm more weapons than they've showed, so thats good :D

Hopefully spells will have more spec lines as well, it looks like healing falls into the conjuration line along with DD nukes in the beta (again just looking at skill menu/website and assuming things I don't have a clue about :V)

Wondering if theirs a skill/stat assosciated with healing/restorative spells and a seperate one for Nuking and they just bundle it together in conjuration for the time being?

Probably won't really know entirely until NDA is completely lifted/release >_<
