Isn't anyone else outraged at having to pay an additional $3.00 a month, every month for EACH character beyond the first? This is just UNACCEPTABLE to me, and a game I was looking forward to I will no longer be playing.
And yes, I understand that 1 character can do everything, but these MMOs are ostensibly role-playing games, and I like to play many alt personalities. Not to mention wanting to play ALL the races at least once.
Anyone else feel this is a gamebreaker? Cause I sure do.
I don't understand why people feel the need to tell others they are not playing a game thats not even out yet. Dude, nobody cares you are not going to play a video game lol.
If you feel that strongly about trying different races and such, you could just keep deleting and remaking a new one. Find the one that is right for you.
In FFXI, not only could you pretty much do everything on one character, but you could also rewatch every cutscene in the game you unlocked. I don't doubt they'll put that in for XIV as well. You can rewatch these CS's when you have more fancy gear and seem super cool.
Like others are saying, it seems like it's to discourage making alts. I think once you actually try sticking to one character, and seeing that there is pretty much nothing holding you back, you'll end up liking it and not caring about alts. It just helps you be able to develop your RP for your one character that much more.
To be the best, you must help each other become the best. FFXI Character: Satimasu FFXI Server: Valefor FFXIV Character: Tamorae Fonteil
It worked in FFXI because FFXI was cheaper than your standard MMO. 3 toons meant you were paying the same as you would for any other MMO with the job/subjob system there wasn't a ton of need for to many alts.
If FFXIV is less than your standard MMO and you can get 2-3 toons for the same amount you would be paying monthly for a standard MMO then there shouldn't be a problem. If the sub is 14.99+ a month on top of the 3$ per additional toon then yeah, that would be an issue for me.
That is if I hadn't already crossed FFXIV off my list lol.
Because we all need to know what is happening in there life's ala twitter and facebook. I want to know when you fart ok! Tell me about your flatulance!
I had alts in FFXI but I certainly did not level them. Just thinking about going through the CoP expansion again made me cringe. It was by far the best expansion in FFXI but was also the hardest. I went through a roller coaster of emotion when I was trying to finish that expansion. I still don't know how I even finished it but i felt like I conquered the world at the end.
I love my tarutaru and I never wished to roll another race. When people tell me that I couldn't be a good drk as taru, you just go above and beyond to prove them wrong. It was like that in FFXI. When ppl say a certain race can't be good at certain job, someone was always out there trying prove people wrong.
So many lil' kiddies running around on 10+ different toons making a mess in MMO's... I support their choice for one character. In all honesty, if it is anything like FFXI, you will only need one character. I'd rather know who I'm playing with, and not worry about trying to remember the alt of an alt of an alt of a main.
Haven't seen one person ask for 10 alts, certainly not 10+. For the people brave enough to risk the rath of the FFXI fanbase, the reasonable request is more along the lines of 3-4. I certainly never used my alts to try and pretend I was someone I was not, so much as hide from a guild, some guilds can be real demanding, or so I can play with a friend who just joined up and instead of babysitting them as some high level character hanging around the newbie area. I really don't care if people think others need only one character. Some of us want more, and it's not your place to determine our needs.

I totally agree with u....
yet nothing stops u from getting more slots and like its not anyones place to determine your needs isnt it your place to determine SEs need to let u pay for it....
Thats just fair isn't it??
No serious even tho most just see SE being greedy with there system do i (and prolly most 11 players) see it different they just want u to play an FF game differently that u play most other games now there certainly r a lot of player who don't agree with that but maybe (just maybe) this players aren't the ones SE is focusing on anyway.
In the end all this arguing about the extra cost for a slot is pointless since its just the way it will be and there r enough players out there who don't mind or even support that decision and all others r free to just not play it if they feel that this small point will make in unbearable for them to play the game and again if u decide that it really makes it unbearable for u well i am sure u r not the kind of player SE was focusing on anyway.
I definitely understand where you're coming from, but I also can see great value in encouraging people to stick with one in-game 'persona'. I have never liked the idea that one second I might be in a group with someone who just screwed over another player or worse a group in one way or another, and then once they have pissed everyone off so that they are avoided they just go log on a new toon nobody recognizes.
When people are monetarily encouraged to stick with one character, in a way that does not limit the abilities that character can possess, this problem is entirely eliminated. The idiots, jackasses, and flakes who are only looking out for themselves quickly gain a reputation as such and through the process of elimination you are less likely to have to deal with them later in the game as everyone else starts avoiding them along with you basically making it hard for them to play.
I see this more as a way to hold people accoutable for their characters actions, and at least in FFXI I felt like it did wonders for keeping people's behavior in check. It also connects you more to that one character, and in a way (at least to me) makes the experience more realistic and therefore a bit more immersive.
The major downside of course is that it costs you more money if you truly want multiple characters for roleplaying reasons. You know what they say: one bad apple spoils the bunch...
They could still do that with one char, just delete it and create a new one.
About the question itself, i kinda find it stupid to price 3$ per char, but in my case i only play one char, so it doesn't really bother me.

You can be assured that I did not drink SE kool-aid and if that is what they want, some minion asking how high they should jump, then they're player base will just be a shift from 11 to 14 which I am sure is what SE does not want. After all, supposedly they plan on keeping 11 around, no need to do that if all they are doing is shifting that player base to the next game and telling everyone else the various requirements necessary to enter some SE cult.

I am almost sure that there r enough players out there who r not SE fan boys which still can accept and even approve there decision regarding the Character slots and while i do agree with u that it cant be in SEs interest to just switch there player base from 11 to 14 am i still sure that they also don't mind that there decision regarding the slots will keep some certain kind of individuals from playing 14 and so improve the gamer community.
Maybe i am wrong tho and they r just greedy i cant really know hell expect the guy at SE making the decision we all cant but i at least want to believe they didn't make it out of greed.(and seeing many ppls saying they wont play because of that it doesn't seem like the decision was made out of greed anyway)

SE is a corporation, just like SOE and Funcom and Turbine. Most of their decisions are going to be made because of financial potential. They're going to make the decision they think will make them the most money, hopefully in the long-term. Sometimes though you get a company like Cryptic that only goes after a quick buck. No one has said they think FFXIV is a grab for a buck and a quick exit. It's still fair to question their choices in charging for something like a second or third character slot. If the FFXI community is so rigid that they think anyone who dares to question the all mighty SE and their accepting fanbase is some sort of parasite to the community, then there is already a problem with that so-called gaming community.

two things. One is if it was 50 cents, I certainly would consider that a compromise, heck even a dollar would make me less likely to think it is anything more than an attempt to discourage excessive alts (even though limiting slots can do that. The second thing is this is still an MMO right, which means its not a static thing, it is dynamic by it's very nature. We've seen MMOs change a number of things, in game and out over the long haul and even the short. Blizzard made a bad call, for now, they're backing off. It's not as if this is some stone tablet that once its penned can never be undone.
Lastly, while I am skeptical about those who say one character is all that is necessary would actually keep a second slot empty if they had one, i don't have an issue with them personally so long as they stop accusing everyone who dares question SE as vagrants or some sort of specimen unworthy of the FF community.

If I had a second character, it would be used for storage and nothing more. Then again, I'm a pack rat.
I don't mind so much the 1 char per account thing (in fact I think all games should be this way), what I think is a joke is that you can pay for an extra one at all. So all the different reasons for having just one char basically go out of the window with regards to the reason it is actually being done.
They don't give two shits as why it may be better or worse to have 1 or more chars they are just doing it for the potential extra cash, plain and simple.
If they were serious about the mechanic from a gamplay point of view it would be 1 char per server, no cash shop slots and only 1 account per payment method. From a game which in its current iteration practically promotes multi boxing it certainly isn't the mechanic which they are looking at, no it's those lovely dollar signs.

Unacceptable, no.
They have reason to do this. Most extra characters are used as mules. just being there taking HDD space, without doing much.
Also repeating the same content can get boring. While if you stay on 1 character you quicker go to higher level content which is more fun in most MMORPG's.
But as I love to play different kind of characters, and every race and gender has it's own way of playing, I can understand your anger.
I am happy that they force me to decide on 1 character, now I will level it all to max, if I then want to change then I hope this works the same as FFXI, that I can create a new character and cancel the old one, and then play with that character.
In FFXI if you canceled 1 of your characters, it would still keep excisting, till you reactivate that character.
And I am sure they will, because some players who first play 2 characters can later decide that they prefer to only play 1 character, so it must be an option to cancel 1 Character.

That is a good point i have to admit.
And while everyone who pays the game for himself could just get a toon or more do i think that it might limit the lil kids who pay from there parents money. After all the parents pay monthly already don't think that most of them would be willing to pay more.
Still agree with u that not beeing able to get multiple slots at all would be best...and in the end we would have multiple accounts anyway instead of toons so it wont matter at all lol

Some people like to role play.
Sometimes I want to play a cheerful and playful Taru female, the other time I prefer to go for the more silent and mature hume male. On other times I like to play a more bossy, confident mithra (more confident then is good for her).
And my hume female I always played as myself, I didn't find it really fun to play, playing as yourself is boring.
For the sake of Role Playing part of the game I think people should be able to make other characters.
But I am not against the $3,- per extra character , for myself who never can make a choise this is a good thing.
Now I am a kind of forced to decide to play 1 character for a long time. Maybe I finally pass the midlevel range!
I am planning to play a pretty silent male, a more bossy but cheerful catgirl, or the more playful little one.
I am already busy for months with deciding about this, I still can't make up my mind. They all are great characters to play!
I am jealous of people who just like 1 way of playing.
With FFXI I had 30 characters deleted all around lvl 10. I could see it when I got my deleted character back, you then see all the characters you made. (this was from 2003 to 2009)
They have reason to do this. Most extra characters are used as mules. just being there taking HDD space, without doing much.
Again, I'm quite sure this isn't the case. It only takes 3 bytes to store hair color, another 3 for eye color, one bit for m/f, one byte for your phys level and one for each of your jobs, 2 or 3 bytes for each item in your inventory, AH, and storage (though a little more if items can be modified), 1 bit for each quest flag, etc. Even if we said that a character takes up 1 whole MB, and even if we said that 2 million subscribers each made the max of 8 characters, that's still only 16 terabytes. So I don't see any way that it could be an issue of wasted hard drive space.
When it comes right down to it, no, I'm not outraged, because odds are likely I'l be paying for at least 2 accounts (if the game design rewards multi-boxing) and even 3 if my son decides he wants to play.
Its all part of the trend for MMO Devs trying to offset the large cost of creating MMO's using cash shops or other promotions to get more cash.
It certainly won't keep me from trying the game or continuing my sub.

(this was from 2003 to 2009)
Again, I'm quite sure this isn't the case.
