Counter Attacks in Mortal Online

RohnRohn Member UncommonPosts: 3,730

From the Mortal Online Twitter today, it appears that the next patch will add counter attacks to the combat system.

"Small goodie: Next patch will introduce Counter-attacks to the combat system!"

No information on the date of the next patch so far.

Cool stuff.

More depth and strategy to the combat system are always a welcome addition! Can't wait to see how it goes.

I wonder how the mechanics work with this, when hit detection is client side.

Probably the same as counter attacks from other games.

I am unfamiliar with how they work in other games.  Can you explain?

To me too, please. I am unaware of counterattacks in any MMO.

When you get hit the move becomes avaliable. Or when you're hit you automatically hit back.

apprently it was in early beta and worked fine

Of course, we'll have to see how they work in MO, but if by "counter attack" they mean a reactionary attack that's usuable after some predefined set of parameters are met, then it could work as in other MMOs.  Just off the top of my head, Vanguard, Aion, and LOTRO all have such responsive attacks (usually active after a successful block, parry, or evade).

As Thorppes pointed about, apparently such a system of counter attacks was in the MO combat alpha/early beta, and it worked.

So how does it work in other MMOs?

Which MMO's have you played? I'll try give examples specific to those MMO's but as above poster said counter attacks are not new to MMO's.

I've played basically every MMO there is, and I've never seen one with a counterattack system.

As previously stated, Vanguard, Aion, and LOTRO all have abilities that would be categorized as "counter-attacks".

Additionally, MO had it in earlier stages of development.

DAoC has a kind of "counter attack" combat system.  You could issue 2 attack commands and if you blocked you would retaliate with one attack, but if you didn't block, you would retaliate with the other attack.  It let you use attack chains with ever-increasing damage.  I loved the system as you had to stay very alert during combat to pull off the most damaging series of attacks.

I can only hope that MO has something like that planned.

FFXI has counter attack for the Monk job only. It would redirect the attack back to the mob. This was random and not initiated by the player. The mobs that were monk type fighters could have a random counter attack as well.

Yeah I remember that.  I liked it even though I was playing a sucky Hero.  But that was a tab target and click and icon system.  I don't see how that would work in MO.. particularly with Clientside hit detection...  are they planning to shift some of this stuff serverside?

Well it worked before back in early beta so client side won't provide any problems.

According to the Mortal Online Twitter, they are working on finalizing the next set of patch notes, so I guess we'll see more details shortly.

    - Counter attacks are now in-game.

Counters can be initiated when you are blocking and get a perfect-block (his weapon arc hits your weapon/shield). Clicking L-Mouse just after a perfect block (timing!) will give you a 20% boost to your damage and will give weakspot hits if you are lucky and stabbing.

Not sure how you missed that Rohn, since it's in the middle of the patch notes you posted.

The Twitter info was the only thing available at the time - Maerlyn hadn't posted the patch notes yet.

In any event, we should get to see how the counter-attack rules work tomorrow.  Pretty cool.

    Yep, this is great news.

The people who were really looking forward to thievery should be pretty happy.  I know there has been a lot of talk about it for a while, and it looked as if it was being prioritized behind guild warfare.

So, both sets of people should be happy come tomorrow (minus the inevitable tweaks and adjustments that will likely need to be made to each system).

So we have those things, along with counter-attacks and bug fixes.

Overall, it looks really good! image

counter attack works in the following way,

if you block with your weapon and get a perfect block and then swing your weapon it will instantly count as a fully charged swing

what this means is the following, normally you can either spamclick your weapon for low damage, hold it 1 second for alittle bit more damage or hold it for the entire animation and do full damage. but after a perfect block you'll instantly get the full damage swing(or stab) with all the bonuses that come with it(like weakspots on stabs) including a 20% damage bonus

    the real angarato
