Gaming Habits -- East and West Cultures

Since I don't understand Eastern Languages, I was wondering anyone who has and understands.

Do people in the East have a popular name kind of like everyone naming their rangers Legolas?

Do they have the same online humor or is it more subdued or worse than Barrens chat?

More social environment or less of one?

Please add more questions or explain anything I have described.

Haha yeh, I've always wanted to talk to someone from say Korea and get to know their gaming style but unfortunately I've never found someone. And like any person, the obvious question would be why do they like grinding? even though they have more wow players than NA.

Same here, I'm actually starting to teach myself Korean.  So maybe one day I can answer this question.

From watching video it seems most of the masses go to a internet cafe, not sure if this is because of income, and shit and smoke.  I remember seeing an interview with Richard Garriot and him talking about some habits of gameplay from the East.  He said something along the lines that they usually game and smoke a lot. So with a cigarette in one hand and a mouse mouse in the other, they point and click where they want to go.  I have seen some video of internet cafes and the people in the actually doing what was described.

Im not necessarily sure that the korean's necessarily like grind. I mean i know they create games that have lots of grind but i think its because they have different payment models for games compared to us. Now i cant say this from any personal experience but my understanding is they pay by time as opposed to monthly fee's like we do. So in order for game companies to make the most money possible they have to make everything in the game take more time. Alot of eastern games seem to have lots of grind and lots of fed ex and quota questing as well as having to go back and forth between npc's that are as inconveniently seperated as possible even when there is nothing to kill on the way between them. Obviously there is no challenge to simply walking your charachter from point a to point b no matter how long it takes, so i seem to think its due to drawing it out so that everything takes more time=more money. I also understand that net cafe's are very popular in asia since not everyone can afford there own computer. Since in order to play on one of there machines cost money based on time as well, i wouldnt be surprised to learn that mmo's are popular in some part because the net cafe's see the advantages to pushing those and having mmo's pre installed on there machines.

Again i have no experience having never been to asia, but this makes sense to me given what i have heard of there habits. But i could be totally off base with all of this.

I'm Taiwaness, and I never see a single complaint on Aion being too grindy on the Taiwaness gaming boards.  I also go to the China gaming board from time to time and I see no complaint too.  "It's like they never notice they are actually grinding".

In China they pay by the minutes.  For 4.5 USD you can play WoW for 67 hours.

I'm not sure if korean actually pay by minutes.  Because some of the area/countries you can actually pay montly subscription.  In Taiwan, we have the option to pay montly subscription instead of by the minutes if we wish.

Another thing is  the market is alot bigger in the East.  And there are alot more MMO's being made in the East.  Try to imagine Rune of magic or maple story.  Except we have like 30 clone of each.  And everyone of them use item mall.

Starcraft is big in korean.  But actually only in Korea.  I went to korea before and I spend a day watching starcraft competition on Live TV.  Which is weird.
