I need help choosing a new graphics card for a friend of mine. He doesn't meet the minimum system requirements (he has a 8500gt). He doesn't have a very powerful PSU either. Its 450 or 500 I think but we will be willing to upgrade that if need be.
However, I found this graphics card that doesn't seem to require an additional 6pin power connector so I think this card will run with his current PSU but I am not sure.
Lemme know what you guys think and I would like to know about any other options/recommendations that are under the 130$ish price range (also I do realize that prices of cards may drop between now and launch of game but I would like to purchase one now since I am visiting him soon for a short while and I am going to help him make these upgrades since he has no idea how).

I just want to take care of the graphics card here for now. His CPU and everything else is fine. But if this card isn't suitable then please let me know and post recommendations please.

ATI seems to be a bitch when it comes to helping optimize this game for their hardware, unlike Nvidia that is actively helping SE with these things.
I'd say fuck ATI and get an Nvidia card if possible, at least you're guaranteed to run the game as well as possible come launch.
Gonna have to tag along with the what is the budget question, that will really dictate where we go. Myself, I have stashed money aside for a needed graphics card upgrade and went with the GeForce 480. It is pure love at first boot, but be advised if you are going for this or related cards, have ample room in your case. They tend to have their own zip codes.

I had the same prob for my pc and i bought a Nvidia GeForce GT 240 for 100 euros, works perfectly on middle setting ,
Shrivels in the corner, hugging his Ati 4890, saying "he didn't mean it... you can run FFXIV just fine....!!!! don't listen to the bad man."
My fresh 5770 is sulking in the corner too.
Hopefully they'll man up even though Nvidia has their logo in the end product. It wont do your customers good if you neglect them, because this is customer service in a way too.
I said the budget was under 130$ish, we may consider bumping it to 150. Please let me explain again. The card I listed doesn't seem to have a 6pin connector and we are trying to buy this upgrade w/o having to upgrade the PSU. If it is absolutely necessary then we will upgrade it. If the 1GB card will do with his current 450 watt PSU then please let me know. I see people telling me to get expensive cards like geforce 480 but that is way out of our price range. I am willing to go either ATI or Nvidia, doesn't matter to us so if you guys can please send links to other options within the price range that will be suitable for atleast the default settings of the game.
Also, the cards I listed have DX11 support and I read somewhere that, even though the game won't have DX11 support at launch, the devs really want to impliment it in future update.
If PSU is the problem then Nvidia is a nono, they eat more power.
I think a HD5770 would do. I have it and 500W PSU and it's fine. Not sure if 450W is enough but I guess?
ATi cards suck. Ati Drivers suck. If you don't have a legitimate copy of windows running on your system then ATI cards REALLY suck!
ATI drivers tend to conflict with other drivers and are a bitch to instal and operate. The cards tend to consume more power than nessassary
there big ugly and clunky
They just suck
I hate them!
Just my opinion
Sorry....
got 5770(1gb version) and pretty much ran all the games at max graphics, no problems at all.
(gta4 was the only game i couldnt max, because the lack of memory)
works fine with 450W
That 5670 card will certainly be a step up, but it's still not going to be a powerhouse. If budget is really an issue, I can't see having only 512MB of video memory being the biggest issue, as the card will likely run out of horsepower before it runs out of memory. But if you can afford the extra $20, it at least guarantees that video memory size will never be a problem, and won't affect power consumption very much.
Any chance of some info (or even a picture) of the side of the power supply? There should be a label/chart somewhere on the side, with funny numbers that talk about things like "3.3V", "5V", "12V", and that sort of stuff. While even a poor 500W supply will likely handle that card, it might be helpful in making sure there won't be any issues.
Also, I'm assuming that your friend's motherboard is using a PCI-E slot for the graphics? Just checking.
Edit: Considering that this game isn't coming out for another month or so, any chance of your friend saving a little money so he can afford a decent PSU and a 5750/5770-series graphics card? It would definitely be worth it in the long run.

Okay but please point me to some Nvidia cards then that will be suitable for his PSU, or cards that will require a cheap PSU upgrade.
Also I have 5770 and I haven't had problems with it or its drivers. In fact, I had more problems with my previous graphics card(s) - Nvidia 8800 gt sli. Their driver support is good though.
Just look what suits you better here , is a really nice site that gives you reviews on PC hardware, just chooce what you like and go to your nearest PC store. All listed here should run FFXIV w-o probs.

hope it helps ya.
Edit: again i dont know if a GeForce GT240 1G PCI-Express would work in your system but is the one im using and it runs perfectly, altought i havent tryed with maxed config.Pretty cheap only 100$ here in spain.
Here is a link to his motherboard;

So yes it does have a PCIE slot. As for the PSU info, I cannot get that atm. I may be able to get that info later today since hes at work right now. The thing is, Newegg.com has a PSU calculator and states that the amount of 339 watts is enough.... I am not sure how reliable that is. Like I said we may upgrade the PSU if it's cheap enough and absolutely necessary. If we can avoid that upgrade then we will.
5770 is a good card nvidais can be good but they are just power hungrey
If you have a 500w PSU I would go with a GTS 250.
I'm a EVGA video card person but to fit into your budget these are 2 brands I reconmend do to having a lifetime warranty. If I had to choose I would go wifth XFX since alot of folks say there customer service is good. Just make sure the PSU is 500w because I don't think a 400w PSU can handle one of these. I believe the bare minimum is 450w. I know for a few xtra bucks like @30-$40 he can get a better card but he will have to upgrade his PSU and he is trying to upgrade on a budget.

Im hoping my rig will at least play this solidly at launch, im running with a 4890 as well. i did find a nice 5850 if i need to upgrade.
those of u that are engaged in beta now, how do u feel a 4890 would handle the game? and u guys are lucky, i havent gotten chosen yet lol

Okay I can't get you a picture of the PSU but here is the info that is on the label.
first row is +5V, +3.3V, +12V
second row is 30A, 25A, 25A
Im not sure what any of that means but I hope it helps.
If it were me i would go with a 5770 considering it sounds like budget is an issue. this way it gives you some breathing room for newer games and without breaking the bank
also check out the link it has some useful info in it
@ DeViLmAn you should get a 5850 i switch from 4890 and its sweet
Okay guys I have some more info. Currently, he has a 8500gt that is about 7 inches long. He said there is about an extra 2.5 inches until a HDD is obstructing the way. He says that it can probably be moved elsewhere to add extra space. So I dont think space is an issue here. Will about 9 inches be enough space?
I have a 4890 thinking of getting 5850.
What was your Benchmark score with the 4890 and what did it become with the 5850? What's your processor btw?
really? hmm, tempting then. ive been told id notice quite a boost, current gaming im fine with but i want to be sure to enjoy the greatness of FF14 very well when it launches

i dont see where there would be much of a diffrence except the 5850 can be Oc alot and its a single gpu
Okay guys. New budget plans.
200$
For both a new PSU and graphics card.
So please, point me towards both these things.
His current PSU is ATX 450 watt.
I have a 450w psu and it runs my HD5770 and I7 930 just fine.
I agree, I bought a 4850 ATI card and HATED it. I installed the card and drivers then it said it couldn't find the drivers cause there was no ati card installed lol. I finally gave up and installed my 8800GT and will never go back to ATI, I'm going to upgrade to a 260 GTX...if your friend could go up to 160ish they have some used ones on Amazon for that price. But, I have a 2.6 Quad Core,4GB ram,Win 7 64-bit and my 8800GT and I get 3100 on the benchmark. Only thing I'm wondering about is would my score go up more with a ssd drive or a 260 GTX.....hmmm. Btw I have a sata 7200 HD..
