What do you miss about RP?

AtaakaAtaaka Member UncommonPosts: 213

I make a lot of money analyzing things. I get nothing back from analyzing the people who make it a point to 'not rp'. So, I decided to ask those of us who really, really enjoy roleplaying to let others see what we miss about RP.

Here are a few things I miss about RP:

*I miss having people around me who enjoy the adventure more than the gear

*I miss stumbling across a weary hunter or traveler in the middle of nowhere

*I miss relying on skillsets that relied on mental awareness

*I miss being an asset to the community

*I miss the spawning of friendships

*I miss the strangers who lent a helping hand

What do you miss?

I may not have been a heavy rper, but I can say I do miss the ambiance and sense of "being" part of a world.  You just don't see it very often any more.  Roleplaying sets a mood for a game, a server, and a population.

I miss the big rpg at the end of MMORPG these games were made with a 99% concept of rping hell rp was the foundation. I miss eq1 back in the early early days when almost every single player you ran across in game was constantly in character roleplaying was great and at its peak what ruined the rp element was the damn corporations who took over the online games.

Now if you want good rp you gotta look for the indie games or play a nwn1 or nwn2 they have some strong rp elements still.

    darkages.com great rp game too.

I fail to understand...why are you missing it?Youd don't need a MMORPG to RP all you need is a social gathering of like minded individuals  whether that is virtual or real and some imagination.I've sen RP in chatrooms,on bulletin boards bakc in the day,In second Life.Basically anywhere there is a form of interperson communicaiton you will find a community of roleplayers.

Not everyone is ever gonna be into RP more thna playing the game and jsut as they have no real right to dictate that you shouldn't be allowed to RP in a game or ridicule you for it,Rper's do not have the right to enforce their preferences on others. The exception being an RP server of course anyone rolling on a RP server and thne refusing to engag ein RP deserves to be ridiculed.

I can't say I miss it much because it always made me feel awkward for some reason while playing games. In Lineage 2 I was in a clan that required RPing inside of our castle, and since I was never a heavy RP'er it just felt really weird talking in character. I can't see why you miss it though, since there is a lot of RPing going on in a lot of games still.

Indeed, Darkages was built with a very solid RP structure. But unfortunately little people RP there nowadays. :( It's a shame, really, the game had so much potential for role players.

Same here. Not a big rp'er myself but I enjoying being my char in a gameworld where other players were being their chars.  Not looking for players acting out storylines, or speaking like shakespear chars (though thats fine). Just people being their chars. Its part of what makes an mmorpg an mmorpg. For me the deathknell was when FC refused to designate an RP server for the US servers in AoC.

I miss the gathering spots where RPers (and non-Rpers as well) would just go to hang out and chat, spar, gamble, duel, etc.

I miss the in-character politics and drama as well as the stories and tales that came with it.

As the above poster said, I miss having spots where you could go out and just know that you'd encounter something different. There was a certain magic to the spontenaity of RP'ing in those places - the Park in Stormwind being a great example of games that had that place (and though I don't play WoW anymore, I RP'd more there than anywhere).

RP in real life - eww...want to keep my RP with my avatar. I Rp in real life as "me" just fine, no need to impersonate a (insert race) (insert class).

WoW was the first game i ever RPed in, before that game i didn't even play MMORPG's beside some free to play korean grinders but no RP in there. I miss mostly the first 3 years of the european Argent Dawn server of AD when people really worked to get things done and earn a reputation. With today's RPers its just claiming titles and no one works for things anymore. Its a power strugle against others and no one wants to be a normal person anymore..no they all want to be the heroes, the strongest person, the one with most power.

I also wish i could have experienced in Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies, but back than i didn't had the computer for it nor the internet or even the will to pay monthly for game so i missed on a great deal of RP history. I just hope they will bring such games back again. I like the idea of a world thats influenced by the players but i don't mind if we can't cause i had great RP moments in WoW and AoC in my rp experience.

Basicly what i miss the most is a nice european community (sorry yankees but if i play on a american server i got huge lag ;) ) where people are willing to earn their ranks and titles instead of claiming. Where RP is something to share and about doing things together without wanting something in return for it.

I can't do LARP..i could never RP as someone else if i don't have my VR avatar and those text based RP things on the net aren't my thing either. I want to see my avatar, i want to dress it up with cool RP armor (no epic huge ass shoulders with swords 5 times my size, just normal stuff) and nice clothing sets for when my knight isn't on the battlefield. And i want player houses. Beside LotrO none offers that atm..AoC gives you a fake player city that doesn't really offer your own house where you can decorate.

I really do not understand this.  Right now there are more opportunities for an outstanding RP experience than at any other time in history.

There are a plethora of RPG's  on a wide variety of mediums, and CRPG's have made great strides in recent years. The only limiting factor is the player.

The best RP experiences involve a group of friends be they RL or Virtual friends. there is also the occasional memorable experience with complete strangers, be that in a RL hobby shop or in a MMORPG.

One "feature" of an MMORPG is that there is no control of who plays and whether or not they even know or care that they are playing a role playing game, However almost all current MMORPG's give you the tools to limit your exposure to those players that do not mesh well with the experience you would like to have to the point that you could, if you chose, make them all into nothing more than minor extras in the background that do not interact with you at all. you could if you chose as a player take your character and a few friends, or even just yourself, assume the role you have chosen or been given in a game and play through the story's and adventures or make up your own within the rules of the chosen game.

Truly the only limitation is yourself.

if you want your experience to be more about the adventure then play the adventure! it's there, the story is there the lore is there the quests are there. All the tools you need to assume the role in a world of adventure within a set of rules that define the world are there.

There are many like minded people in existence you can find them in any MMORPG and/or you can bring them with you and ignore those that care more about gear, minmaxing etc.

Even in a game that is as simplified as WoW has become and as pleasent as the over all population has become, you can choose to put your character to the limit and push the boundaries of what you should be able to accomplish. You can assume the role of your class and race, and you can explore the lore and story that is there. you can make friends and find help when its least expected.

That's not to say everything is roses though. there are many of us who would like to be in an mmorpg that the entire population was like minded.  however that will never be the reality, again the MMO feature makes that impossible, However your personal experience when it comes to RP is more up to you the player's ability to play than any game or overall community.

One of the many things I miss about roleplaying is the on the spot humor.

Classic example, in early UO there were a bunch of us in a dungeon room looting crates for stuff to sell. Some of us would hide among the crates as we did so, because PKers were always a threat. A magical gate opens up inside this room, and through it came a guild of PKers who weer all well known, and almost everbody stated running away immediately. I was hidden, so I stayed put for the time being, while I watched these powerful PKers mowing down most of those running about trying to escape. In the meantime, the leader of this PK guild stood silently still. I knew he was searching the room using tracking skill to discover any hiders like me. I was just about to run, when he uses another skill to reveal another hider (a friend I knew), then proceeds to cast paralizing spells followed by damage spells, repeated a few times to kill my poor friend while he was helpless to run or move. Through this assault, my friend said, between attacks....

    "Lets....."  "be reasonable"

I laughed so hard my gut was splitting.

    Once upon a time....
