Gamepad suggestions?

wfSegwfSeg Member Posts: 96

As the title says, I'm looking for a good gamepad to use with FFXIV. After reading around a bit, I guess some of the people who've played FFXI will have some suggestions for FFXIV gamepads.

Currently, I have the Xbox gamepad, and wonder what those in beta think about it (or any gamepads).

Xbox 360 or the old xbox controller?

If it can connect via usb stick with your Xbox 360 controller.  If it can't connect via usb I would still suggest the Xbox 360 controller since the drivers for it is from M$ and signed.  You can use a ps3 controller on your PC and get the drivers from motionjoy.  Those drivers can be a pain because they aren't digital signed and have to go through some loops to get them to load on every boot up.

I went and bought this: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/441/264

Playstation styled, nice grip... feels extremely comfortable (maybe a little small for significantly larger than average hands).

yeah right , and i would be very disappointed if a gamepad will be the best way to play FF XIV on pc.

What a lot of trolls... Let people use whatever damn interface they please.

Go to a dealership, stand in the middle of the showroom and yell, "lollerskates automatic transmission is fail! lolzerz" and see how people look at you.

I use an AIRFLO. Those are kinda' hard to find now since they don't make them anymore. They work great though. The only bad thing about it is there is no rumble for it. But if you have a 360 controller, those work pretty well too.

I'm just going to use my wired 360 controller and/or my keyboard and trackball. (I haven't used a mouse in years)

Ps3 controller for me. Contemplating getting the chat pad add-on.

I use the logitech cordless rumblepad 2 myself, I prefer the playstation gamepad layout and not being tethered to a wire is always nice >.>

It a gamepad does prove to be required (or at least preferable), I suggest finding one of these:

    http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-NetPlay-Controller-Sony-Playstation/dp/B00006SKJ4

It is PS2-Era and getting hard to find. You will have to get an adapter from E-bay or the like (that lets you connect PS2 controllers to a PC) but those are pretty cheap. E-bay is usually your best bet.

It's kinda big, due to the laptop-sized keyboard, but its comfortable to use and really minimizes the annoyance of the back and forth between the controller and a PC keyboard.

I used this to play FFXI on a big-screen TV. It let me sit on the couch with everything I needed to play the game, which was very nice!

I would simply get a good ol' PS2/3 pad and an adapter. Or Xbox360 pad, whatever you prefer. Can't beat 'em.

I don't think it is trolls. . I just bought FFXI to try out.  The controls were aweful with the mouse and keyboard.  It seemed obviously set up for a controller.  I played for ab out 30 minutes.  I love console games. . but I prefer a mouse / keyboard for controls.

    • Features all the controls you expect in a PS2 controller - Four action buttons, analog force feedback thumbsticks, digital D-pad, L & R triggers

    • The controller features a built-in mini keyboard for typing messages while you play

    • Also includes four macro buttons for pre-programmed commands

    • Officially licensed by Sony for use with massive-multiplayer online games

    • Fully compatible with Final Fantasy XI Online

Apparently it has a ps2 connector and a USB connector. The USB connector is for the keyboard and if you have a ps2->USB converter the gamepad shows up like a normal controller. So you don't need any weird drivers for it to work on a pc.

While I prefer mouse+keyboard, I will have to see how the control feel's, I played FFXI with the m+k set up and did not find it that bad, I am sure it could of been better but oh well. So hope they do some improvements on the m+k side of it cause I will still be using it and cursing them for not fixing it hehe. But then again I will give them a chance, I will try out the 360 wired controller with it and see if I like it better or works faster than my m+k, I like one of the other members said have a trackball and not a real mouse. But all in all I prefer to not even touch the mouse much and do it all on keyboard with shortcuts and macros.

If you already have an XBox 360 gamepad that you can use with the PC then you're sorted since it has an identical button setup to the PS3 gamepad (bar the switched left thumbstick/d-pad). Anything that resembles the control functions of a PS3 gamepad will be perfect for FFXIV since the game is being designed to accomodate the PS3 controller specifically.

And to those saying that a gamepad is fail for an MMO... that isn't the case when the game is designed with a gamepad in mind.

the point with the gamepad based mmos is that there is little to no movement when you are infight , and that sucks

The game uses a lock-on targetting system that alters the movement controls to strafe around the target during combat. There is plenty of movement and it is necessary to fight optimally as positioning is key in the combat mechanics.
