So how much longer do people think Vanguard has? I ask because I'm enjoying the trial and was thinking of subbing. But just reading through a bunch of forums it looks like Vanguard is on its last legs. So... worth the money and time or will it be dead by Xmas?
Comments
I think it will be around for a long time. So many people just still can't get over the bad release, and hold on to ot for ever. I must admit that SOE really sucks bad, but Vanguard will be around for some time.
I would easily try the game if they added anthropomorphic legs for the hybrid races, but that's just me being picky, lol.
I tried it and licked it sooo much that I got the limited edition off of ebay and subbed, I was going to play Lords of the Rings with my GF but I can't stop playing this game. I think that if you want to sub then do it, if not then don't. It is really that simple, because whom is to say how long any MMORPG will be around from EQ to WOW to Aion etc, they will all die at some time, what you want to do is enjoy them for now.
The last remaining VG playerbase consist of people who never can see anything wrong with the game. They are the die-hards, the most loyal of loyal playerbase left. So when you ask the question if Vanguard will get shutdown anytime soon, of course you'll get answers like "oh it'll be around for a looong time".
Let's just look at the facts:
-The game started out in a mess, Sigil quickly went bankrupt and got bought by SOE. 200k players bought the game.
-6 months after launch the VG team got cut down by 50%. No problem, there's still hope.
-Roughly 8 months into launch, game receives its first server merges. No problem, there's still hope.
-12 months after launch, VG team got cut again, by an unknown amount of people. No problem, there's still hope.
-1 year and half into launch, the game finally receives raid UI and visible player helmets, everyone rejoice.
-Some time ago, VG playerbase says "the population is on the rise! vanguard is reborn!".
-Some time ago, Sartok, the last remaining Vanguard PvP server, had roughly 50-60 players on during prime time hours. But the Sartok players still said, no, the server is fine, the game is fine, don't touch Sartok.
-Some time ago, VG playerbase says "the population is on the rise! everything is fixed, join the game!"
Fast forward to recent months...
-All servers got merged into 1, no more PvP server. Soon the euro server will get merged as well, which would create huge lag issues to all foreign players.
-The remaining handful of devs just got cut by at least 2 staff members, 1 was raijinn well known on the VG forums, the other unknown.
-SOE publically announced it has pulled Vanguard from all discussion panels at the SOE Fan Faire. Vanguard will not be mentioned, not showcased, not discussed, and the person that was going to run VG live quest (raijinn) is gone. Remember this is SOE Fan Faire, not E3 or anything that costs SOE extra money to buy a booth.
-Right now post-server merge, the lag issues are creating huge troubles for the playerbase. The dev team has been unable to fix the lag problems. (http://forums.station.sony.com/vg/posts/list.m?topic_id=54080) (http://forums.station.sony.com/vg/posts/list.m?topic_id=54003)
-Other issues plague the game since merge, such as the guild trophies issue (http://forums.station.sony.com/vg/posts/list.m?topic_id=54089)
-So far, the devs have been quiet, with no news, nothing about what's upcoming, nothing about how they will fix the issues from the server merge, etc..
So, you be the judge, is Vanguard on its last leg? Personally, I think so. Now just to show you I'm not biased, I'm going to suggest you to play the game if you find it fun & interesting. I mean why not, the average longevity of a MMO these days is just a few months for players anyway before they move on to something else. But if you do subscribe, you at least do so knowing the facts about the game. No it's not in a good shape, no you won't expect much content releases let alone fixes to existing issues. No the population isn't on the rise and there really isn't anything worth mentioning about what's coming next. Anybody that tells you otherwise are just day dreaming. Nobody knows when VG will get shutdown. Before Matrix Online was shutdown, I would've probably said SOE wouldn't do it. But since MxO did get shutdown, I do fear VG will have the same fate sooner or later.
Hope that helps, have fun

Hard to say, but I feel for all the VG fans out there. Having a game you like saddled with the burden that is SOE is a tragedy. If only they'd sell it off to someone that would invest in it...
With the server merges down to the absolute minimum it can get, and an already dwindled staff dwindling to a number we don't know...yeah its pretty safe to say Vanguard is on its last legs.
Population and resources has NEVER had an upwards trend. There's never been a net gain of population in the way that prevented server mergers or opened new servers, there's never been an upward trend in staff being hired rather than fired. There's never been a year where grim news such as this summers' grim news hasn't rolled out.
Kind of hard not to be pessimistic. When the only trend is downwards and the things that make-up Vanguard are finite, obviously 0 is hit at a point, and its close to 0 on servers and staff. Highly unlikely SOE is going to wait until the player base hits 0 first.
First off, I'm just going to say I love Vanguard. In my opinion it's one of the best PVE games on the market at the moment. That's just my two cents on that. Now, on to the subject at hand. I know that Vanguard isn't doing the greatest but do I think that it's going to close down anytime soon. No, I find it very unlikely that SOE will be closing Vanguard in the immediate future.
What am I basing this on? The fact that SOE owned games like Planetside and EQ Online Adventures are still running. Both these games have a very small population. Hell, EQOA's population is probably smaller then VG's. In the history of SOE they very rarely shut down games. With the Station Pass VG is just another incentive ( no matter how small) for people to pay the extra money.
So, do I think VG will be around for a while? The simple answer is yes I do. Do I think it will be around for as long as EQ or UO? No, but I guess only time will answer that question.
I'll bet anyone here a $60.00 certificate at any game store that this game goes the way of MxO.
Anyone wanna take this bet?
Vanturd saga of zeroes (can't beleive I wasted money on this fail game).
If you like the game, play it. If you listen to people on this site every SOE game in existence is on its last legs.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.
I've been playing the game and I love it! So I'm most likely going to subscribe and play it and enjoy it. I personally don't think the game will be shut down since SOE still has games like mxo, planetside, eq1, and swg.
If you like PvE this game is awesome, the community is the best, and despite all the doom and gloom about devs and server merges and blah blah, I think the game runs well and there is a ton of content to experience especially if you have never played.
I don't think you have to be a "die hard fan" to play this game, that is a bunch of bologna in my opinion. I just started playing recently (I never had any interest when it came out or years afterward) and I can tell it's an awesome game. The diplomacy and crafting are both a ton of fun (I stayed up all night last night just running around chopping down trees and quarrying, then playing the crafting mini game, and then doing the diplomacy card game and reading the stories), the quest lines are interesting, exploring and fighting in dungeons with other people is a lot of fun. I always meet nice, funny, and helpful people when I'm questing or chatting in general chat. I've played on my boyfriends level 50 something warrior before, and he has his own ship, a house, and a flying mount. I love this game!

A few things..
-SOE shutdown matrix online.
-EQ1 has probably 10-20x the population of Vanguard. One EQ1 server alone has possibly triple the Vanguard population.
-Planetside is a SOE-built game, and since they are building a new Planetside, it makes sense to keep Planetside going.
-SWG is a SOE-built game, and they are working on another starwars title, I think for console but I can't remember. Either way, it makes sense for them to keep going with it.
Vanguard isn't SOE-built, Vanguard actually makes SOE look bad, Vanguard is really not anything SOE wants to be associated with or else they wouldn't cut the already tiny staff with recent layoffs, and they wouldn't cut VG from discussion panels at the fan faire. I really wish I could see other people's point of view, but I just can't understand the fanatical support. I was a fanboy for the first year of Vanguard, but everybody grows smart after awhile and realizes they're just dangling the carrot around while letting this thing rot.
Anyways, yes play the game if you have fun with it, that goes without saying for anybody. But just know the game will not see much development, they don't have the staff to fix many of the issues existing in the game today. You will bump into a wall and wonder why you've invested so much time & money into a deadend game. I guess I'm just wanting people to know the facts so they don't make the same mistakes I did by dumping money & time into a game that isn't going to go anywhere.
My opinion
EQ1-AC1-DAOC-FFXI-L2-EQ2-WoW-DDO-GW-LoTR-VG-WAR-GW2-ESO
And with EQII getting a f2p option even less people will bother playing Vanguard!

So you present the facts why you think the game is bad. How easy it is to debunk facts
The fact is, the population is dwindling. Who knows how long the game will live, personally I wouldn't be surprised if it will be around for some time.
Don't forget, players playing your game, are paying customers. Customers that aren't with the competition.
Feel free to debunk anything I've said so far. Of course when it comes to how long the game will be alive for, it's all speculation and opinions. But I've laid out plenty of actual facts about the game, starting from beta, to launch, to years after launch, which shows you a trend that does not support the idea that Vanguard will be around for a long time.
However, can you actually give us any facts that support why you think VG will be around for a long time? You can no longer use the excuse people used to use...about how SOE never close down games. Well they did with Matrix Online, debunked.
You can no longer use the excuse that because Planetside is alive, it must mean they would keep VG going. SOE is building a new Planetside, so it makes sense for them to keep Planetside alive. Debunked again.
You can no longer use the excuse that SOE says they "fully supports Vanguard 100%", because well, SOE pulled Vanguard out of SOE's very own fan faire. No more discussion panels. It can't be good news when the company that owns a game does not want to showcase the game at its own fan faire.
You can't use EQ1 as an example because that 10 year old game has tons more players than Vanguard has.
Is there really anything other than blind faith that makes you think Vanguard will be around for a long time?!
EQ1-AC1-DAOC-FFXI-L2-EQ2-WoW-DDO-GW-LoTR-VG-WAR-GW2-ESO
Yes, it’s your opinion, and that's all it is. Everything that you listed is neither a fact nor is it falsified. It's all opinion and speculation. We can sit here and argue all day about if VG will shut down. But the fact remains that we just don't know. What we do know is people were saying the exact same thing you are 2 years ago and here we stand still debating it.
Also, what games are going somewhere? They all pretty much the same and we play them for fun. So, if someone decides VG is fun and subs, are they wasting their money and making a mistake. I don't think so. Just because you didn't enjoy your time in game doesn't mean that others will feel the same as you.
It's not really an opinion. The fact is there has been hardly ANY development in this game at all as of the past year. Just look at the patches http://vgplayers.station.sony.com/gameUpdates.vm. There's been one this year and that was in January PLUS it was just a hotfix. Lets be real here, there isn't going to be any more actual content added in the foreseeable future, if ever.
What about this one http://forums.station.sony.com/vg/posts/list.m?topic_id=52396 ? I guess Magi Hold wasn't new content. Who know?
Their forums are a little better then the rest of the site you should look there.

Anyways, some of this is also true but it still doesn't mean a game is shutting down. I've already said this once but look at EQOA. It hasn't had anything added in years and still remains open. In fact, if you read the official boards for it a developer actually said to a player a year or so back, "Who are you to tell me what I have to do."Yet the game is still rolling and people are still playing. So, once again saying that they are not adding content is a valid point but it still doesn't mean that they are shutting the lights off. VG shutting down is still just an opinion at this point. Who knows, maybe they'll add a free to play model like they are doing to EQ2. That's also an opinion and a valid one that still could happen.
Well I apologize about that. I had thought it was shut down, but it is listed on my station launcher. Odd.
Already said I don't care if they don't add anything or what not. It runs fine and there's a ton for someone new to do. I play MMOs for the fun of the moment and the experience, building up a virtual character can be fun, but it isn't vital that I hang on to it forever. Good times come and go.

Vanguard is t6he best mmorpg out there hands down to many of u cry cause of bad launch and beta whatever play it now it a great game. There so much to do in it it would take u a year starting fresh just to see it all if u could even see it all in that time. I hate though troller that played in when it first came out then base it off that or play it for an hour and say its crap go back to WoW where its safe and everything easy to get. Its a old time mmo like eq not the no brain ones they have today.
I've been debating trying it again. It has everything I like in MMO's. I like free flight, visible housing, prefer no zones, lots of fighting, fighting classes with some magic support. This game has those things.
Unfortunately every time I've tried it I've gotten bored within a few weeks or frustated at the glitches - characters not loading up on the character select screen half the time I load up the game, continuous hitches when running - all just make an irritating player experience. Then there is the fact that it feels so quiet, no strange tales or conversations in the background.
Hmm still debating.

I won't pay for Vanguard, but that's really just because I don't have the time to play to get my money's worth out of it.
If it ever went F2P I would absolutely play it.
I am still subbed to it and jump on occasionally to play. Do not have the time for a guild so, PUGS are pretty much my bread and butter.
I agree it is the best of the PvE games out there.
Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.
If you enjoy the basics of the game, play it. I think it'll survive another 6-12 months. There's at leat 6-12 months of good content to explore. Why pass up a chance at 6-12 months of solid dungeon crawling? And, VG has some of the best dungeons of any MMO in history.
Sure, you could use that time to join another world that will certainly survive for many years. However, you'd be missing an opportunity to play VG. You will still get to experience that popular game later on when VG is long gone.
That is why I resubbed.. they could shut it down tomorrow I don't care. At least I got to play one of the better PvE games in history, and most artistically beautiful games out there. What's the alternative? Play a cartoonish game? or a game I get bored with after a week? or maybe another game that constantly pushes their cash shop on you? No thanks.. maybe it's short term maybe not, whatever the case at least it is a good time waster until next year's mmos are released...
in fact think I'll get off this forum and go waste some time in Telon right now.
If they rolled out a fresh server along with a 30 day free period on that server I bet they would have a chance to revive the game. I mean, wouldn't their experience be better than what players saw at launch?
