Can't move / control any part of the game

JetrpgJetrpg Member UncommonPosts: 2,347

This thread is dedicated to all the fanboies who help dev.s and pub.s bottom line by disallowing any critical statements about their games.

I just heard in this youtuve video that warhammer 40k will have no movement and you can't control anything in the game. But no worries it going to totally rock because war 40k board game miniatures don't walk and you onl;y control them once in a while. But you will do a lot of reading in the game, some dice rolling ohh and painting you can paint in it. But most of all its like a moive. Movement sucks, keep it real war 40k yeah yeah, way to keep it real THQ don't conform to the whiners, who all want to like effect the game and stuff. Yeah Yeah

Ok while none of this is true, as far as i know, i just had to post this because of the can't jump/swim threads in the ff14 board. I figured the defence of such decisions was so illogical that why not just go all the way and not able to move or control your character at all. Why not if its "keepin it war 40kish". While i think this example is very different from the ability to jump swim, the argument i was using are the exact same as some of those supported by many in that board.

I just would like a bit of logic no jump or swim doesn't = bad game, but it does futher limit the players experience. (Please come on arguing that 2d is better than 3d is a crazy concept) But with or without these factors it doesn't make or break a game. Combinations of game systems are what make games good and bad, not one simple thing (unless its a game breaking aspect, like fries players computers, super computers get 2 fps, server down 6 days out of 7 for 4 months, those are game breaking).

MORE IMMPORTANTLY: What is sad now , as i typed this, it sounds like a pretty good mmo war 40k board game id pay a small fee to mmo it out on a war 40k board, haha) Maybe im the one who is wrong :)

And please don't QQ this is largely lighthearted with some attention to trend that we see for every game. Wanting a game to be good doesn't make it good. I know i really really wanted SB to be good, even while playing the beta i hoped if they fixed their netcode and some loading issues it could be good... they never did. And i QQ'ed I was once a pirate, i know where the pirates are coming from... But then i stole a lot of land and becuase a samurai (noble) yeah yeah.

PS. pirates = fanboies, ninjas= haters, Samurai = those who like rice, girls, and saki. And attempt to appeal to logic.

~ The Samurai , take this ninjas and pirates.

Ok, here is the *real* reason some games don't offer jump: While being 3D in the way they render their graphics (i.e. polygonal graphics) the playing field/map is actually 2D. In order to jump you need a 3D playing field as well and in fact in most games that's the *only* reason you need it. 2D playing field is much simpler (no "i felt through the world" kind of bugs) and especially when it comes to MMOs it's more "secure" as well against hacking. It probably generates less network trafic and less CPU load on the servers as well.

Of course the fanboys will always invent some improbable reason for it usually related to lore or game mechanics, and the haters will always spit out something like "omgsux", "wtfbbq", "trolololz", etc...

Oh so devs have no option of making / using game engines that have 3d playing fields? Zomg no way. So the real reason is the devs choose to use a 2d playing field for some reason. Let not the ability for devs to develop the game get in the way of rationalization. And while this argument may be logical a few years ago i believe the z axis has been used enough in game that there is no shortage of ability to do so.

Still this post was not about the ability to use the z axis at all, but your post seems to only adress that. This post was to point out how people will rationalize, flame, and  eNut-uh (no, No, NO!) anyone making anythign less than love gushing comments about their game. In doing so i mented the latest example of this with ff14 swim/jumping forum rage. And still in this thread am only met with more rationalization why its the games fault (well who makes/choses the playing feild as 2d or 3d for that matter the dev.s so obviously its not just becuase. Instead its becuase they chose not to have jumping or z axis control). The only reason you need 2d movement is for walking. (That statement there was the orginal point of this post, if you can arbitratly define somethign as usless/pointless and rationalize it to not important, well why not take the next step and do the say for 2d movement as well. After all that the "only" reason you need it.

As for the "secure" rationalization. It does has some merrit. But lets be honest if you have played a lot of mmos as i have, the jumping hack was never the bad one. The hacks that got me mad where (speed/lat, detect, damage, etc.) the hacks that acctually impact the game. WAr i guess had bad backroute via movement both 2d and 3d ... and lets be honest they did as much walking as they did jumping.. no more. The z axis should generate an almost undtectable amount more of network traffic (xxx) like small after all its just 1 2-4 length number. Cpu load poosibly becuase map would tend to be more 3d and less flat and this equals more polygons, data , etc.

Of course the the fanboys will invite some reason games don't need jump usually realted to the lore (To keep it FFish this happened alot of the ff14 boards). But lets be honest jumping is not a bad thing.. it adds and entire dimension to the game that is GOOD, no matter how you want to rationalize that it maybe bad; jumping is good. Does a game need it to be good ... no. Games don't need 2d movement to be good. But they often add a more robust experience and people should just admit this, get it over with and stop repating the same old rationalizations and red harrings.

I will however, agree that it is easier to make a game with a 2d playing field (or more simple), some people may even perfer it. But that doesn't mean you can't disagree with it and say i want to play mmorpgs with 3d playign fields.  And the appropriate response is not well XXX dev.s/pub/s aren't goona do it so too bad, or i play a lot of games without jump that means your wrong. The appropriate response is to say i personally do not feel z axis is needed for an mmo. If others come back and say well i do. Fine let it be. But don't make crazy agrument about how xx game didn't have it or how its better, some how beucase less is not more or we would all be playing eq1, uo, and mudds atm if that were true.
