#1 MMO Killer!

I think the Number #1 MMO killer is the UI, that's right, the dreaded user interface. At least for me.  I can't tell you how many couple of hundred games I uninstall after about 5 mins of play.

  • Takes up about 2/3 of the viewing area. (if 3D otherwise for MuDders clunky interface =D)

If you want to watch numbers all day I have a link for you.  http://www.progressquest.com

  • Terrible unresponsive control of the character via mouse or keyboard to the actions on screen(i.e. jumping, running, turning)

Kind of like getting lag and 3 fps.

  • Access to main menu and interface functions.

Where you have to take 10 mins out of your schedule to find a way to not show your helmet/hat.

  • Camera Controls

Damn it I want to look at my characters face or take a certain screen shot, not run to a building find the exact distance,               turn your character the right direction angle the camera just right then realize you can't get the right distance and                         ghost yourself ><

  • Making and windowed dialog or character/bags/skills a permanent location

Hate it when you want 2 separate windows open and they are on top of each other.

  • Textures of UI

I don't need a cornucopia of florals, extra artwork, and random bullshit on my screen. Great for the role-players or                       people want to feel like the world but that's diagreeable. Because you look at this world as you would any other and                 unless you have fat cheecks or a big nose you really shouldn't have a lot of clutter in your vision beside eyeglasses.

I'm sure I'm missing a lot more.. I'll think about it some more.

I know everyones UI's are different and most I can tolerate with certain exceptions.

The main reason, I have to look at it every time I play.

What do you guys think this a killer for you too?

I thought Sam "da Man" Deathwalker was the number one killer in MMOs?

Or perhaps that was "best burst DPs"....or simply "Most likely to catch a disease due to  paying for sex from a ho".

Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

Seems why all the hacked accounts as of late has a reason, explains it right there.=D

For most its number one killer becouse they cant figure it out and dont have patience, so they go themepark guarenteed ezmode gameplay for casuals:)

Yeah UI can be a pain in the butt... It upsets me when there is no scale option because even with a 28" monitor having the same size UI in 1900x1200 makes it really really look cluttered.

Your comment on the mouse and keyboard movement really isnt a UI problem as much as it is a game mechanics problem aka craptastic movement >.<

Yep those two are a good portion that will kill games for me right away too.

It has a lot to do with patience, Recently went back and played Asheron's Call talk about trying to relearn the controls again but with due time it came back to me.  Eve was also a learning process and I still have it installed (Just waiting on Walking on Stations for the cash cow.)

I'm sorry but the top killers for me is lack of complex and interactive gameplay. And immature, lousy communities. Oh and lack of group content and social interactions.

Most interface issues can be fixed by a little known (at least to many) feature called Interface options. Most modern games come with ui options. That's a non issue (usually)

Have to get past the UI to get to the gameplay.

Take the time to fiddle with game and interface options. Yes they do exist!

If every UI was like Warhammer's or EVE's, yes, these "interface/UI options" would be perfect. Resize, move, change text size, hide windows, pin windows, customize to your heart's content.

Most games do not do this.

No, I would not say this is #1. If the game is fun and interesting, I can overlook some painful aspects of UI.

I definitely agree with you on the responsiveness part. If the game doesn't respond well to key presses, it feels too much like you're not in control and you're just mashing keys and hoping something fires.

Right now, I'm playing Champions Online and I'm having a lot of fun playing it. Annoying UI thing: every time I create a new Champion (which happens a lot, because let's face it, the most fun part of CO is designing costumes in the character creator and trying out new frameworks and framework combos), I have to set up the key binding for the way I like to have it. Can't do it once and have it cascade through to all characters (that I know of). It's annoying, but for me, the fun in the rest of the game offsets the fact that I have to step aside for a few moments after entering the game with a new character to set up my key binds.

    Playing | GW2
    Wanting | Pantheon
    Watching | Crowfall
Retired | WAR, Cabal, MO, CO, SHK, WoW, FFXIV: ARR

The only way that the UI is a game-killer for me is if I cannot fully customize it.

Interface -- more than simply the UI with its buttons -- is the window between user and game.  A blurry window means the user will be incapable of enjoying the game.

But the window isn't everything.  Gameplay matters more; otherwise you end up with a perfectly clear window overlooking a dung heap.

It has been my experience that my girlfriend is the #1 MMO killer.

Nothing cuts into gaming time, like a woman who wants my attention (sadly for housework, fixing the car, running to the store, helping her friends out, etcetc.)

I have to agree... i stop playing free trials after about 20 min of play if the UI is bad... after 5 minutes of city of heroes i quit because the UI was terrible.

I'm gonna have to agree completely with OP. You hit it right on the head for me, mate.

UI is definitely a primary aspect that I judge MMO's with. Which is unfortunate since most UI's are that ugly, ability hotykeyed, squared off type that makes me want to puke when I see it.

Controls are also right up there. Along with character animations. I can't begin to tell you how much I hate awkward run animations.

The list goes on, just stuff that seems simple but really has a big impact on me.

    I agree with the OP.

Also the fonts on the UI, chat, above characters: Is it so hard to pick a nice, proportional font and render it smoothly?

Luckily my wife plays with me most of the time.  Along those lines it's a killer for me also, kinda.  Why I brought up the UI to be honest cause if she doesn't like it, it means I'm more than likely not going to play it.  Also the genre, she LOVES fantasy, as do I but I like a little variety.  Trying to get her used to the controls on Divine Souls/Dragons Nest because she really likes the idea of Tera but I don't think she will like the controls too much ><.

I also quit many mmos. Mostly because there were not alote of ppl, bad combat, and slow lvling.

The UI isnt a huge deal for me. I started playing Darkfall and hated the UI, now I wish every MMO used it...it just makes sense.

For me the #1 MMO killer is a linear world full of invisible walls...I play MMOs to get away from reality for my time online.  If the world seems crafted by human hands, I grow bored.

Darkfall is the perfect example. The world is massive! and each part was fully detailed down to each rock and patch of grass. No loading screens. Fully emmersive world to explore and live in. How anyone can go play a MMO with plenty of loading screens and a small world full of invisible walls to areas you can only see and not explore is beyond me... May as well go play DDO or GW for free in my option. Its all the same crap lol

My number 1 MMO killer is Andy Dick.  Whenever he shows up the game dies.

UI issues are annoying enough to make me quit , but I could still play if the storyline was engrossing enough. I have quit 5 MMOs, 2 for UI, 2 for the NERFS and one for the community annoyers.

The #1 MMO killer is the casual, race to lvl cap, e-peen, game-hopping player.

Personally, a lack of complexity is a big problem. As well as a lack of diversity in game design within each game (hand-holding rails does not work for me). A lack of choice, no significant death penalty (ie consequences for your actions), a lack of discovery all prove to be giant hurdles.

Gaming since Avalon Hill was making board games.

Played SWG, EVE, Fallen Earth, LOTRO, Rift, Vanguard, WoW, SWTOR, TSW, Tera
Tried Aoc, Aion, EQII, RoM, Vindictus, Darkfail, DDO, GW, PotBS
