Surprisingly enough this game has several of the main things I am looking for in an MMO that I want to sink my teeth into for a few years.
1. Western game company producing and developing the game.
2. Based off of a brand new IP.
3. Dynamic world to an extent (ie rifts and dungeons changing depending on level) which is great I like new things, but nothing too flashy or game changing for me.
4. Mention of 12 and 20 man raids/dungeons, but also some world bosses (more about endgame and such is yet to be released).
5. Seamless world with very few load times (dungeons/raids will be instanced, but that is perfectly fine with me I prefer it that way).
6. New or not I love the fact that you can combine skills and moves from up to 3 different classes.
7. Game world and graphics look great just an opinion - FF14 and GW both look amazing as well, but in different ways due to art style and such.
8. Also has some PvP, which is not my main interest in a game at all, but I like to do some if the system is set up well and it is fun
I know a lot of people are looking for some new game that will do all kinds of new things for the genre and quite frankly I am not on board for that yet. Rift looks like it will contain many things that are familiar to MMOs with a few new different things that are not ground breaking or anything, but seem very interesting none the less.
Anyone else have comments?

I agree with you mostly, this is #3 on my list right now, number one and two being FFXIV and GW2, respectivley.
The only thing that's keeping me shy from getting giddy over this one is that it's a new developer and I've had that burn too many times. It does looks promising though.
i'll be playing this one. i don't know a whole lot about it but what little i do know i like.
I agree the new developer thing makes me a tiny bit nervous, but I also think of it as this game is there first baby and they are going to try and coddle it as much as possible aka make it the best they can.
Funny you should menton your 1 and 2 games because mine are the same FF and GW, but I am a bit disappointed with FF14 so far as I try the beta out and look for things they can improve. I am banking on SE squaring a lot of things away before launch.
Anyways back to rift lol
I'm really anxious for the rest of Rift's classes. I want more info on the Ranger's companions. I love pet classes but want something where the pet is more than a fancy DoT.
The game does look interesting, the only thing that turns me off is that its still TAB to target and press 1-9 to use a spell. With alot of new games about to come out that are target less combat, or that use the UE3 / Cryengine 2.0, what will make this game stand out?
edit: theres some combat in this video
Good video I have seen it before.
What game besides TERA will be manual aim that is a fairly big upcoming title?
I agree, but other than TERA/DF/MO what's coming out that isn't that way? I think it'll be a while still before someone hits the "new" combat mechanic nail on the head. AoC tried, but it's still a tab>1234 game with more splash damage.
New dev only in terms of the company name though tbh... they are packing enough experience in that team to sink a battleship.
They are far far from unproven
I want Rift to be Vanguard with resources. I think most everyone that loves/loved Vanguard is hoping the same.
I wanted to really like this game and the game itself on its own merit seems promising. But im highly concerned about how the company has decided to deal with things in ways that just dont seem smart and the game isnt even out yet. Im referring to its lawsuit with pallidium books over its name. A name the game didnt go by in the first place until more recently.
A little over a year ago, at last years E3, they showcased this game in an episode of the mmo report during there E3 special. It looked like it had great potential and the current title they were using for the game was Heroes of Telara. Fast forward to this year and they decided to use the current title of Rift: Planes of Telara which leads to this lawsuit with pallidium books. What stake did this company really have in this name that makes an ongoing and expensive lawsuit worth wasting all the money that could be going into further development and marketing for the game? Especially given as how pallidium still has a decent chance of torpedoing them in the lawsuit, since the earlier win for this games legal team was based entirely on jurisdictional boundaries that the current ongoing lawsuit between them is no longer based on. When the smoke clears, How much money will this company have wasted for something rather trivial?
It just seems rather petty for a game developer to lose a bunch of money on when they should have bigger priorities. Im inclined to believe that Pallidium books grievance with this company seems legitimate since they have been in business for around 3 decades now and given this game isnt even out yet and isnt going by its own original title for the game anyway, why not just change the name to something else and save themselves the money over a name and put there money torwards making a good game instead of making there lawyers more rich. If making there lawyers more money over any petty reason is a priority with this company then i dont think its a company id prefer to put money into.
This game along with GW2 and SWTOR are on the top of my list.
Rift and GW2 will prob. bring more new stuff to the MMO genre than SWTOR will but its Bioware and Star Wars so I am gonna have to play it.
Don't worry, you will have played through SWTOR in your free month, you can play real MMOs after that
I get what you are saying, any money is a waste, but in this case it's a justified waste as yet another name change right when they were ready to head out of the gates would have been very damaging. That aside, they had every right to defend their new name, as every company has.
All that aside, Palladiums awful PnP RPG is called 'Rifts'. This game is called Rift: Planes of Telera'. R: PoT's name is no more derivitive of Rifts then Dragon Age is of Dungeons & Dragons, or a billion other 'Dragon' games.
How come no one attacked BioWare for 'stealing' D&D's name? Oh yeah, 'cause it would have been ridiculous. The ONLY one to blame here is Kevin Siembieda for bringing yet more pathetic litigation in order to try and get some kind of profile for his sad little IP.
That's easy... Vindictus... and there are current mmo's already out that have moved away from tab target, plus another mmo coming out but this won't be soon is WH40K Dark MIllenium.
This game is definitely on my "watch and see" list. Over the years I have learned not to get excited about new MMOs on the horizon..
As for their name debacle.. Maybe they wanted the game to be known as Rift: PoT instead of HoT. I have no idea. I tend to agree with the idea that a lot of resources are being wasted there. Oh well. I've always felt that money should be spread around once in a while. They are just doing their part.
First of all, you can't (at least where I'm from) trademark too generic words like e.g. Creativity, without adding an add-on line to your trademark such that it distinguishes itself - e.g. "Creativity the Berlin Creator". This is what Trion has done, so I don't see what the problem is.
As to why they changed the name, well, after beta testing it was revealed that the Rift feature of the game was very popular and fitted alot better with the game's lore and focus on dynamic contents. They thus, didn't just suddenly change the name for no reason, they re-designed it to focus more on this prominent feature.
Im pretty sure the suit is already over and it was found that Paladium had absolutely no valid claim for their lawsuit. As such Rift: Planes of Telara will be the title name.
In short, the court dismissed the complaint filed by Palladium.
The full filing is below, but here is the important bit.

You are wrong. Its plain that the court dismissed because of lack of jurisdiction, not lack of merit. Right now there are no Rift sales in that court's jurisdiction. That changes as soon as the game goes on sale, unless they forgo selling copies in that state.
Went back and watched the video on the site because I always confuse Rift: Planes of Telara with T.E.R.A for some reason. I like the graphic style and the open/massive look to the dungeons and world environments.
I think I need to follow this a bit more.

Seems that trion is making a huge mistake trying to focus on sidetracking the debate over trademark in a video game vs. a rpg series. Seems like they didnt here about RIFTS: promise of power for the nokia n-gage which sets the precedent for PB having established there IP in the video game market. Plus the fact that RIFTS has been a commercially registered and maintained product for over 20 yrs. Trion can only really attack the validity of the trademark itself which seems like a stretch, as opposed to being able to deny infringement should there tactic fail. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
Oh ffs, who the h*ell cares about some book company, that is not even called the same thing, have no resemblence whatsoever to the new franchise, and it's not even on the same MARKET. But I guess you could sue anyone for anything in the states.
Well, i for one happen to care. Im not so much picking a side based on fanboism for PB here, but i can understand the position this puts pallidium books in, just as i can try to understand trions pov. As others have brought up, there is alot of similarities between both IP's even without the name. But the combination of the similarities AND the use of the same name does cause a legitimate amount of concern for PB and puts there own IP at risk. PB to the best of our knowledge isnt putting out an MMO, but it has already released at least 1 video game, and a big budget movie is in the works. Trion choosing to use the Rift name doesnt do itself much in favors if the movie winds up being mainstream succesful and people here about this game and then wonder why there different environments, feel fooled and leave. This may give trion a bad rap over fooling the public in the eyes of many of these same people unaware of the differences before hand.
Its less a battle over markets as it is a battle over who has the right to asighn Rift(s) to there IP. I wouldnt expect lucasarts to be thrilled about a book series coming out by the name of Star War. Just as i dont expect a video game called Star Treks to not cause an issue. Simply adding or subtracting a plural distinction at the end of a preexisting IP may not be enough of an alteration to make a diffrentiation between seperate IP's. That is the aspect of this that makes me curious, as this could have far reaching consequences beyond this one single lawsuit.
I was very surprised when I saw this. Especially in that all the devs that made EQ2 great (before the current devs decided to destroy it), are now working on this game.
Everything I've discovered about this game has pleased me a great deal. I can't wait until this game is released.
