General: Community Spotlight: Have you Ever Ragequit an MMO?

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

This week’s Community Spotlight is focused on the thread “Have you rage quit an MMO? What sent you over the edge?” by Amathe, who is no stranger to our Community Spotlight series. Simple enough, Amathe wants to know whether or not  you’ve been pushed over the edge in an MMO before, far enough to just quit the game completely on the spot:

“I have.  So many times lol.

Usually it's either that my progression has hit a wall, I've been nerfed hard, or the number one reason "drum roll" ... guildmates annoyed hell out of me.

So it's confession time.  Have you quit a game (not in a studied, calm, this just isn't working out or something better came along way) but in a demonstrative anger - let them eat cake - sort of way?

Let's hear your story. :)

Ragequit huh, that is a new one on me.  I have quit MMO's in disgust though.

Of course the famous NGE made many of us quit Star Wars.  Don't have to go into that debacle.  Being a creature handler that suddenly had no class certainly was a game stopper.

I also quit DAoC a couple months after Atlantis came out.  A group of hibernians had stormed through the expansion content to get the skill sets that make them invincible in pvp.  Watched them take over the albanian frontier against 5 or 6 times their number.  When a game built around pvp suddenly becomes very one sided it is time to leave.  When the developers only made token changes to address the issues the game was not fun anymore.

WOW, ran into a bug that had been in game for monthsand got locked out of a dungeon for a week. filed a ticket, was told it was fixed and there was nothing wrong, just wait a week and it would reset.

i waited a week, tried again, and got locked out for another week. when i filed a ticket i got the response that the bug had been fixed and to stop filing tickets about it.

this is at the same time that the forums had all kinds of posts about how it hadnt been fixed.

no point in paying for a game when the end game doesnt work and the developer wont even admit there is an issue.

IF THE ONLY DEFENCE FOR CRITICISM OF A GAME IS CALLING SOMEONE A TROLL OR HATER, THAT SAYS A LOT ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THE GAME

I have and it was Final Fantasy XI and Everquest 1 (the most memorable for me in a negative way) both for the same reasons to a degree. Both games were/maybe are were heavily grouped based. There was a point where you couldn't do anything worthwhile without a group. So usually it required you to wait for a spot in a group to open up. I remember many nights waiting for a spot in High Hold Keep in Everquest 1. However I hit my limit when I finally made it Velious. There was nothing I could take solo. As a wizard there was this staff I could try to get to help kite but even that required help and that just wasn't coming either from random players or from a guild which just happen to be filled with higher level players. Many of whom who were more concerned with raiding. The guild leader was really nice but she wasn't on a lot due to having a child and that naturally should have come first.

Anyway so after a few days of being stuck in terms of leveling, waiting for spots in groups that never came I tried to root and nuke so single creatures wandering around. It seemed to go okay at the start but I hated it. Especially since my time at night to play was limited (was still in high school). It was like watching paint dry in terms of progress. Then during one fight I hand nothing but fizzle, fizzle, fizzle, etc... All the while why my stats were high due to buffs, etc. Then I died and that death actually deleveled me I believe. I had never been so pissed off before at a game and generally everyone in regard to that game. From the designers, to those that refused to help, or allow a spot in a group, etc. I quit right there, don't even think I bothered going back for my body, canceled and actually went as far as to uninstall the game and didn't touch the cds for a few years. I went back once or twice after and it was the same thing but with even less people playing. At this point I don't even care where my cds are. I get curious once in a while to play it again but then I remember why I finally left.

The same thing pretty much happen with Final Fantasy XI. However I got stopped fairly early when it came to waiting 3 hours for group in the dunes just to get the items for my damn subjob quest. The second time I tried it I was extremely lucky as there was a high level helping a friend get them and I asked if I could tag along and they agreed. With that done I managed to get to Juno (getting a group was always easier with a subjob and no one would look at you without one on Fairy from what I could remember). Then I was greeted with more hour long waits for spots in groups. Groups where I pretty much was tagging along. No downtime and this was with English speaking players. I couldn't do the storyline, etc. After waiting two hours one day I just logged out, canceled, and uninstalled and haven't looked back.

I don't play any game where I have to wait any length of time for a spot in a group. This is why while I do enjoy grouping a MMORPG must be soloable or have instances.

Not really ragequiting, but EVE once I realized that hour a spent killing people in lowsec ruined any chance of me playing the game in safe space.

lol, if 40-50 of you couldn't take out one group you should have quit. I can see where a fg took out your group but in almost 5 years of playing that game I never ran into a FG bad ass enough to wipe out 45 people in open battle. Even with tards attacking random targets you would win.

I'm not sure if I have ever "ragequit", but I have stopped spending my money on sub-par money grabs like Champions Online.  It will be a long time befoer I touch another Cryptic breation, if at all.  I also quit SWG after the whole change-over.  Most of the time I quit a MMO because it is boring and repetative.  That is what happened with City of Heroes/Villains, however I am playing that again and it is fun!

I have. But I'll admit is was 25% 'need something new / time to move on' - 25% 'new thing came along' ...but a solid 50% was pure, unadalturated /raaaaaage and disgust at a good game gone horribly wrong.

Requiem: Bloodymare/Momento Mori. Gravity let hackers completely take over the game as soon as Season 2 was launched and refused to do anything about it and or denied it was even happening. Kept trying to play for another 6 months, but eventually just became disgusted with the management and watching longtime guildees succumb to the evil allure of being cheats and scoundrels. I hear they've since started banning hackers again - but it's too little too late, for me. LoTRO f2p FTW!!!1!

The closest I came was when EQII came out, I told my guild in EQI that EQII was a far better game and I'll be playing that from now on. I never looked back.

I've quit MMOs for all kinds of reasons over the last 12 years, but the only time I've ever "ragequit" was playing Age of Conan:

It was because of the Ganktube called the Eiglophian Mountains at lvl 55 that made me freak out because I couldn't go 5 seconds without getting jacked while trying to kill a mob. Terrible level design IMO. So terrible in fact, they lost a sub over it. Great game otherwise. Ganking is a part of the game, and I was ok with that for about 50 levels, but this area was so absolutely retarded I couldn't see continuing to pay for the game.

I dont really call it a rage quit, but yes SWG after the nge.  Tabula Rasa after the sniper nerf but that was ok they shut that game down.  I have quit ddo and now lotro after the f2p stuff.

Im looking at ragequiting eq2 now with the f2p stuff.

Right now I am not sure what is left to try, all the mmo's are trying to copy each others free to play bs.

Yes, I ragequit my sub in LOTRO :p It wasnt something that happened instantly, but more of a last drop that made me pissed off at the game.

Badgers. Having survived an Epic quest fighting some Goblins, I had trouble staying alive against some tiny badger in the next area. In that same area there were also these long snouted animals (forgot their name), which I also hated. My captain back then wasnt really a fast fighter (before first expansion).

I already had trouble in making my herald following me in group situations without it attracting the wrong mobs (it refused to follow you in your footsteps, but walked around acting like an aggro magnet). So when I left the group to go to the next area,  it attracted a badger that took me what seemed like ages to kill. It completely destroyed my immersion. From epic quest back to vermin exterminator. Too much uninspiring dangerous vermin in that game!

I have never rage quit, I did quit wow because, the customer service person told me, they could not help me and if I did not like it to play another game, so I did.. If the mmo makes crazy changes like the nge, I will play it for awhile if I don't like it I quietly fade away, no big silly post in the forums about leaving, I will take the time to do the exit survey.. :)

I have a lifetime sub to LOTRO, so I have no intention to rage quit, but your point is well taken. I don't understand why in ANY mmorpg that the developers insist we stab, slash or smash repeatedly on these inconsequential critters! It takes more than one hack, more than one slash, more than one crushing blow to kill a badger? Really?!!!  I'm sorry, I'm not the strongest of people, but if I take a mallet to the head of even a medium sized dog, it's as good as dead. Developers need to get this right some day.

I wouldn't necesarly call it a rage quit but I wasn't happy to be sure...  Unforunatley for me it happened a few times where I left EQ2 and was pulled back in a few times by friends only to get ticked off at something in the game and leave again.  Basically, the reasons I had departed first was with the combat changes they instituted halfway through the leveling.  I mean wtf here I learn how to play my toon and now it's changed mid level wth!  Then came back played for a year or so longer and left after a guild leader I respected was ousted in a "coupe" and then after many of my friends departed the game I did as well.
