Well, the topic of housing came up in the "too early for a free trial" thread. There's plenty to be said on the topic, but I don't want to derail the thread so....
As a starting point, here is slapshot's argument about the value (or lack thereof) of housing in MO:
"If you take the statements listed above.. how does that mesh with the earlier statement about how great the housing system is?
If there are "thousands of spots" but only 100 houses... and it takes only "3 days of grinding".. and we are now almost 2 months since launch...
WHY are there only 100 houses?
There are two possibilities:
A) The housing is currently useless or not seen as worth the effort by most players
The population is so small that only 100 players want a house...
So I guess my question to Username509 is... WHY are there only 100 houses if they are so great, easy to farm, and you don't have to worry about losing it to a large guild?"
The obvious retort is that there is a third possibility that he hadn't even counted on. There might be more involved in building a house than having the cash on hand, To avoid a wall of text, I'll get to that in another post,

****** ABOVE is the full text from my response. and the quote I was responding to. So your number 3 would not apply unless the person I quoted was wrong in stating " If you have enough gold to get a house (and it only takes about 3 days of grinding to get enough gold for one) you can get a house. It's really not that hard"

Requirement for building a house (tier 1):
500 gold for the floor plan
25 engineering skill
35,000 stone, 20,000 wood, 3,600 metal
You walk around with the 500 gp floor plan to find a housing spot. Once you identify a house spot and place it a resource chest will appear in the location. You can then place the stone, wood, and metal into the chest. You then use the resources in the chest to build the house. If i understand correctly, anyone can access the chest while the house is under construction, so you have to chose between leaving that amount of resources lying around, or making several trips to town in the middle of building the house (of course you will need to make several trips anyway to transport the materials from the bank)
In Mortal online you are always vulnerable to other players killing you. The worst thing about that is losing valuable equipment. The surest way to increase your chances of getting killed is to stand in one spot for an extended period of time (especially if its obvious that you have something of value on you) Building a house combines all of those, so most players are not going to consider building a house until they feel they can "spare" the needed resources "just in case"
P.S. @ slapshot: Thank you for your prompt response... I didn't include the post you were responding to because I thought the meaning of you post was clear enough without it.
I love housing in mmorpgs but I gues only 100 players want a house, maybe cose of the low population.
Again the person I replied to stated "If you have enough gold to get a house (and it only takes about 3 days of grinding to get enough gold for one) you can get a house. It's really not that hard"
So it sounds as though your issue is really with his statement so perhaps you might be better served quoting and responding to him and debating the difficulty of house building. I simply stated that if what he said was true... and there were only 100 houses built of thousands available.. that either the houses didn't serve a purpose that people felt was worth the effort or there wasn;t a demand due to low population.

Very well then. "Only takes about 3 days of grinding to get enough gold for one" is only part of the picture. I think my 2nd post explains what else is involved well enough to clarify that point.
Which leads right back to GTWANDERER's initial post about housing really needing a guild's backing...
It's very difficult to continue a conversation when you only cut and paste a few select sentences from a multipost thread...

Thats one of the options.. as I said above:
A) The housing is currently useless or not seen as worth the effort by most players (note the second half of the sentence and how it relates to Osmunda's suggestion)
The population is so small that only 100 players want a house...
Honestly it's probably a combination of everything discussed here and in the other thread. So I guess it's not A or B but rather A AND B.

A lot of players that have houses also share them with friends. There's no need for me to go through the trouble of making my own house when I can use my friend's. Small guilds use them as a base of operations, they don't need more than one or two. Add to that the fact that there is a low population and 100 houses sounds just fine. Not to mention that a lot of players just prefer staying in towns at the moment since they have all the NPCs to trade with and libraries and such. Until those things are added to houses/keeps there's not much of a reason to leave a town for a house.
The number one reason why less percentage of players own houses in Mortal Online than in StarWarsGalaxies preCU is that you need someone with house contruction skill to build a house and this take up skill points that most players don't want to sacrifice. In SWG anyone could plop down a house. In MO you have to hire a house builder character, or spend something like 50 gold and skillpoints for a housebuilding book.
I would estimate that only one player out of every 100 players in game actually owns a house.
However the fact still stand, that Mortal Online house system is the best housing system in any MMO. Ever.....
