Be careful Mike. Mentioning SWG in any kind of favorable light brings out the "rose-colored bashing posse" in droves. It's not ok to like anything from the "uncle Owen" game.

More to your point I doubt they will have a space gameplay akin to JTL. Being able to make all those ship parts and mix and match them most assuredly isn't considered being "heroic" or "iconic" and therefore Vogel/Walton won't have it. Thinking of features in the most top level, most accessible, non-complex terms and that's more than likely what you will get. You'll get a few items you can purchase via MT to decorate your ship but I doubt customizing the ships parts like in JTL will happen.

I gotta tell you, and this most certainly is just my opinion, but it feels like they (Bioware) are just motoring along waiting for potential players to cry out for something very loudly and then they think "ok, we'd better add that now". I'm fully aware of Bioware's practice of not releasing information on games until very shortly before launch. Still, that doesn't prevent me from having the aforementioned feeling.

If they don't deliver the fallout on this one will be epic. Just glad I'm not invested in this one bit.

One thing for sure is that Bioware are definitley not listening to anyone who writes on this site that is one thing that is a dead cert. The space combat untill they really show it and show it is integral to the whole gameplay concept is a little pointless. I for one feel it will be a gimik and unless they have a fully fledged universe to explore including thousands upon thousands of locations to visit it is pretty much pointless.

I guess the only reason people will use it is if it is required to get to some planetary locations that are not available as standard routes. and require combat to get to.

I believe that it will be a Star Trek Online type deal. You load into an instance, do the objectives, rinse and repeat. I mean, it's pretty unrealistic to assume that this will be a full fledged experience like Freespace. More than likely, space combat will be there as something to do if you want to take a break from the ground game.

I'm just hoping that these "hotspots" will be numerous and the missions varied enough to warrant the development time. Also, some of those "hotspots" need to be PvP battles.

Just going to echo what most everyone else has already said...

X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter was one of my favorite Star Wars games of all time (actually, most Larry Holland sims were amazing), and SWG's Jump to Lightspeed was one of the few aspects of that MMO I genuinely enjoyed. If Bioware can even come close to either of those two (with room for expansion/improvement), I'd be thrilled... but I'm not holding my breath. My guess is it will be a rehash of that turret mini-game offered in KotOR. Here's hoping I'm wrong.

    That would be extremely disappointing.

Full ship control like X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter or don't bother at all.

This doesn't give me the impression that "space combat" will be anything more than what it was in KotOR: A rail shooter where you sat in a turret and shot at sprites zipping across the screen.

I believe it will be a bit more, but not a lot more. Probably use ME's galaxy map for travel. Then the different hotspots on the map for space combat will be mini games. Possibly a way to level and earn space gear or titles to upgrade your ship/house. I hope I am wrong and they pit more into it, but I will not hold my breath.

It seems that a lot of devs went from SWG to SWTOR (part of the speculation that there wouldn't be space combat was because a current SWTOR dev/former SWG dev essentially blamed SWG's failure on JTL rather than NGE) so I don't think it would be unreasonable to assume that Lucas Arts has comissioned them to recreate JTL.

Actually, I suppose it is possible that, depending in how SWG is licensed to SOE, they are lifting as much transferrable assets from JTL straight to SWTOR.

In all, I think it's very good that they are adding the space component into the game at launch rather than after launch. Even if they space combat is very lackluster at first MMOs always evolve and grow so the potential for massive improvements to the system in future updates (I expect Bioware will release two massive updates a year like CCP with EVE Online rather than a series of tiny updates all the time like Cryptic with Star Trek Online.)

As it stands now, I already love the idea of my starship being my housing, my hub, my transportation, and the ship I fight with. It'll seem more real for me to go to a docking bay, see my ship there in all her glory, board and run around, customize it, the n take her out for a bit of space flight or combat. I imagine that SWTOR players will feel more affinity for their starships than STO players ever will.

I don't expect perfection upon release.  For an MMO, what needs to be there is a good basis and framework for growth.

I agree with the OPs comments about SWG JTL.  It was well done.  I have hopes Bioware will eventually grow ships into fully combat capable arm of the game and also as social settings for multiplayer/faction base of operations.

I would love to see a SW battlefront II style space combat. Where you have to take down each others capitol ship. A great pvp experience that would give you that overwhelming epic battle feeling. I know it isn't likely, but that is what I hope for and would definitely sell the game even more for me.

Stopped reading article at the snarky "I told you so". Nobody cares that you along with the rest of us didn't expect much to happen at Comicon for SWTOR.

Although I eventually rage-quit SWG, JTL was a bright spot in a dimming game. I would find it highly enjoyable if the space experience in SWOTR was similar to JTL. I miss the "old" SWG.

JTL did have some trouble here and there, the controls and combat weren't quite optimal imo; but overall it was a good addition to SWG, although a lot of people hated it as well.

While I most certainly do not think space will be a minigame in TOR, I'm sure it won't be the same thing as JTL either, TOR is simply not that much focused on crafting and assembly as SWG was; so I don't expect to see the whole component thing.

However, several devs who worked on JTL are in fact working on TOR right now, so it might show some similarities; we also know ships will be customizable.

I'm hoping for a fun an hopefully quite epic space experience, along the lines of freelancer or freespace.

Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!

When in space means a cross between EVE online and actually being able to flying into a planets atmosphere and to take space walks I will go for it. Otherwise it will just suck.

According to scans from the PC gamer mag, and on the TOR website.....

    http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=182698

It's going to be a space shooter on rails.

MIssions vary from 2 to 8 minutes.  No multiplayer yet (but they plan to add it). You can move your ship up and down, left and right on XY along a predetermined path.  A few other things they mentioned.

I posted this on the tor site and I'll say it here.  What SHIT.

Great, I understand we didn't expect space to be in.  But we are playing gloorified swoop racing in space.  Why not add real swoop racing, and save actual space for space.

I did not want, or think that EvE or SWG type space sim would be in.  But I was much more sure it would be something much closer to XWing Alliance or Tie Fighter.  Just terrible.

I can't see myself enjoying space on rails like they said anywhere near like I could enjoy a Tie Fighter sim in space.

I was hoping for JTLS style space combat. I loved the X-Wing game it was one of, if not, the best flight sims I have ever played and JTLS was close enough to that to make me happy with it. Hopefully Bioware will come to their senses and do something different, if not for launch perhaps as an update or even expansion in the future.

What were they thinking?  Tunnel fighting?  Why even bother?  This is the first negative thing I have seen about this game.  Hopefully we can ignore this aspect of the game when playing it.

Despite my respect for Bioware, I can't help but feel that this is gonna suck.

Would you say that you've "got a bad feeling about this"?
