Talking about personality (Poll)

n3verendRn3verendR Member UncommonPosts: 452

Apologies for my other post, anyways...

So there is this talk of the personality system, which are basically elaborations on things we already knew... but it got me thinking...

Won't all the "I always kill everyone I come across in games" people be present in GW2 also?

So this poll is to see just what YOU will do when you get in the game, I personally will likely roleplay my character.

Im thinking of being along the lines of bararic, Notoriously evil in fact. Seems its the way i act for most games, tells alot about my state of mind doesnt it.

    I voted "role-play"

If it's anything like GTA where your roving gameplay allows all sorts of capricious dealings, I think it will a very good system to add to Story/PvE. No consistency is my preference! Kind one moment, a brute the next. Ripping-off NPC's or acting like a philanthropist as your mood changes.

    This!:)

I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them

    Interesting!

I personally will likely roleplay as earlier stated, but will seek out to attack those that I believe are in the wrong, wether they are or not. Barbaric? Nah =p

    A little bit Dexter? Yeah.

I've tried to roleplay in other games but it just doesn't really work out to well because of the games mechanics. But this seems like the perfect thing to get my roleplaying juices working.

Yeah I'll just try and give my main char my personality.

I want to see where my personality would bring me in the world of GW2.

As for my alts... I'll mix it up with them.

Truth be told, these replies aren't at all what I was expecting - based on 11 years of prior MMOing, I would have expected 90% "With fist's flying", because people care so little about personality and interaction with NPC characters when they already have the best stuff/highest level.

Love the Dexter comment above... cant wait for the new season to start!!! I am actually very similar in my playstyle & personality as well.

Anyway for your quote... While tehre is a large group of people who could care less about those things, youve also got to remember that many of us actual "gamers" (as opposed to say simply  WoW players =/= gamers, they only really know WoW but nothing els eof the genre) have gotten our kicks out of doing exactly what youre talking about with the personality/interaction stuff since the old school RPG days. The problem has not been that we dont want those things, the proble has been that unless youre playing a single player RPG there has been very few games to offer this depth/type of interaction, and for the most part the few that have attempted it have failed in many ways. Hopefully, along with everything else theyre doing right, they get this right too an give all the other MMO devs another nice kick in the ass and say "Hey, stop doing the exact same thing youve been doing for 10 or so years and change things up a little, make it mor einteresting!"

This looks spot-on, if you check out the "Talking Heads: VO & Dialogue in GW2"

Thanks for the replies! This is interesting =)

However, let me expand a bit on what I mean...

Back when I played Everquest, I found that unless you were like THE MAX level/gear... you didn't knowingly mess up your faction unless it was in an extreme and frankly careless case. One example I can think of is this group of NPCs I never saw many of and happened by one that was an easy fight, fast respawn and a lot of experience so I camped him for a week or so and gained 2 levels. When walking through freeport to get to the boat one day, a member of his faction attacked me and was subsequently chopped in half by the guards.

Also, at higher levels on my Shadowknight (which is a class with poor starting faction any ways) I found that camping Freeport guards was beneficial, as they were easy compared to a lot of enemies out in my level zones and were even easier to kite and kill.

However, in more recent MMOs... and I am talking about pretty much all that I've played according to my profile save EVE online because well... ships were expensive.

We know that gear in Guild Wars has been historically cosmetic, and that you can buy from a merchant for a few plat the best quality gear in the game. So with the leveling curve being well... the opposite of cumbersome, and the gear expectation being a sidelong focus... what benefit do "power gamers" and completionists gain from good faction with NPCs and farthermore will they become KOS like back in EQ days? It is certainly starting to seem that way. Here's hoping for PvP servers where we can assist the guards against those types of players =) I say PvP servers sort of whimsically, but really - It would be cool if factions were the deciding factor on who your could attack. I doubt that will be the case but I hope my point was made.

I think you have misunderstood something you read, or perhaps didnt see the articles about GW2s PvP. There won't be PvP in the main world itself, so no there will be no chance for us to do things like as you mentioned assist guards fighting certain types of players. All PvP will take place in 2 places:

    Arenas and The Mists

The Mists will be a very large open area where PvP consists of 3 servers fighting against eachother for control of resources, objectives, etc. Every player on the other 2 servers is your enemy, and every player on your server is your ally. So no I don't believe any of this personality stuff will play any part in PvP aspects, other than simply other player's reactions to the way you're playing and acting. There will be no seperate PvP / PvE servers, since EVERY server will consist of PvP in the 2 areas i mentioned above, but it is up to you to go to the PvP arenas or the Mists seeking it out.

Hence why I said "Here's hoping" =) don't misunderstand, I was just making scenarios as to why something so elaborate would be in the game... for a more practical purpose I guess. I was definitely aware of the things you said, thanks however for attempting to fill me in.

I don't think I've fully understood you either?

If you mean that another layer to PvP (some form of practicality to insert it is what you seem to be driving at) I'd go along with this notion that player choices driven by quest choices (falling in with A but out with A's enemy B, C etc) and alliances (secret organisations feuds eg) and actions (killing too many of the same NPC's) could potentially open you up to Open-World PvP antagonist relationships with other players/NPC's that likewise overkill their chars in some way towards "unlocking"  elective open-pvp?

I like the fact GW2 has defined it's various PvP modes very clearly: WvW Casual/Mass and GvG Structured/Controlled numbers. I'm sure they could leave the PvP door just open enough for a proxy open-world option as above? Afterall the 5 races may be in alliance, but politics and war will out...

It was a hypothetical, really no reason to state it originally - but I did =p

However, the point has already been brought up so let's elaborate - While I doubt you will be able to actively kill NPCs, I have no doubt (as it has already been stated) that you can be violently rude to NPCs... it does make me wonder if those kind of actions will force you into being a pariah in some towns...

They have stated that your behaviour will not impact on gameplay only in the way NPC's communicate with you, to that end I don't think that you will be penalised. The town's residents may not react too kindly to you if you've got a bad ass reputation but they will still grudgingly let you take part in events and use the merchants. So yes you might be loathed but you won't be hindered by your choice of responses. These choices are purely for RP purposes and won't be excluding you from anything, it's a great way to encourage us to develop our characters with no fear of locking out content.

I'll be roleplaying but I'll be doing it organically based on the choices I made at character creation with my back story, choice in my personal story and the reactions I make to the world and what's happening around me.

As classes aren't locked to race and each race has it's own starting area I'll be creating a few alts, plenty of scope for different personality types *grin*.
