What do you guys think? I currently have a dualshock 3 controller that I use with my PC while I excersise :P From what I've heard FF XI was very "controller friendly"; will this game be the same? Just wondering because I'm really interested.

It worked amazing with the controller, its still very much lacking in the hardware mouse department, so using a controller even on the PC is the prefered way of playing as of now. Its kinda sad really
Mess with the best, Die like the rest
The real question is if the PC version will be mouse friendly. Honestly I may be completely passing this up purely because it looks like mouse control and the PC interface in general is going to be an afterthought and suck again.
Well I'm sad you guys feel disappointed, but those are amazing news for me
Why can't people get it through their thick skulls that this game is designed from the ground up to be used with a controller? Stop raging for a second and think about what that means. It's not like they designed the game to be used with a mouse and keyboard, but are intentionally providing poor support for it so that people will be forced to use a controller instead. How unbelievably dense do you have to be to not understand that?
It's similar to bitching that your car has a steering wheel instead of a series of levers and pulleys. IT WAS MADE TO USE A STEERING WHEEL.
Damnit, now I want a car like that.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
In this case SE should announce the game is made to be played with a controller only and mouse/keyboard is not an option. But then agian this isn't true and therefore your post is useless and just wrong. Also their top pirority atm is better pc controls, sp theres another reason i think you may be rationalizing and making jumps in logic.

No, they are making a concession to people who, for whatever reason, have some kind of retarded aversion to using the game's preferred control mechanism. You wrongly assume that because it is playable on a PC, that it must conform to the normal PC game conventions. The game, like FFXI before it, is made to be used with a controller. Period. Can you use a mouse and keyboard? Of course you can, but because it has to be played on a console, they had to make design considerations that end up making mouse and keyboard LESS desirable than the controller.
I lived in Japan for 3 years, and I know from first hand experience that the Japanese prefer playing with a controller. Square Enix is a Japanese company. Do you get it?
When you can type as quickly on a controller as you can on a keyboard, I'll consider it a viable replacement.
Those "people" that are having concessions made for them, are the other 10-20 million MMO players in the world that don't play FFXI and thus use a keyboard and mouse.
Oh i agree , but SE has maitianed otherwise, so while your logical and agrument is sound here ... your defense is not becuase SE has said otherwise. No need to argue with me, im not opposing you SE is.

I give up.
If you can't understand that the game is easier with a controller, then by all means, handicap yourself by using a mouse and keyboard. The "people" that you speak of, are the folks like yourself that can't seem to get their minds around this concept. You're probably frothing at the mouth over the "no jumping" issue as well, aren't you?
Mankind is doomed.
Wait wait! I know this next one. Uhm, your next reply is gonna be....GO BACK TO WOW!?!?!?!?
Sure, jumping would be cool, no I don't really care one way or the other. Those people that I speak of in a non sarcastic tone have more money to spend on ffxiv than all of the ffxi players, so yeah, it matters to SE. Maybe YOU people should get over the fact that they're working on the mouse/keyboard controls, pretty much every single mmo and computer game in the world uses these controls and the fact that if they get BOTH sets of controls working it is better than ONE.
Mankind is doomed because I have a preference of using pc controls for a pc game, laughing my ass off over here, really. Considering a pad works A-OK already I don't know what crawled up your butt that you think it will matter how much time they spend on making everything else works.
Shove your "OMG IT WAS MENT FOR CONTROLLERZ YOU NOOB!" attitude. The point is, you don't put something on a PC and then just decide to not support the interface used for that medium at all and completely ignore the capabilities of the client (depth of field remaining at a lovely fixed PS2 setting on PC in the last one for example) It's like releasing it on a console, and then providing only mouse and keyboard support. Would that be equally right to do? If you're not going to bother to do it right, why the hell bother at all?
I donno why people are bitching about this. Get a controller, how hard is that. People are already shelling out 100s of dollars to upgrade their pc, spend 30-50 more dollars and just get a damn controller. Personally im glad SE doesnt conform to the norm. when i played FFXI with a controller i felt so much more confortable being able to sit back in my chair and play the game, rather then be all hunched up and bent over my keyboard. But seriously if you dont want to play the game based on the fact that the controller is the perfered choice, then personally, i dont care for you to even play the game in the first place, Im already having a feeling that im gonna see nothing but complaints aboujt the game after release because its not like WoW, ooooo woooooow they did something different, good for them! i dont want this to be wow, i dont want to feel like im playing wow. i want to be playing FF, and hey i played the all the other FFs with a .... guess what, a controller! So enough of my ranting. Sit down, shut up, buy a controller, and deal with it.
Let me help break down your arguement.
FFXI was locked on certain features (graphics) on all versions (console/computer) to make sure everyone played on the same level. While, in my opinion, that's just flat our stupid, it's what SE chose to do. However, depth of field was changable by altering registry settings like most of us did anyway.
And, no, it's not like releasing it on a console then providing no support for a controller. They are providing support for a controller, mouse, and keyboard on all versions. However, a controller is the prefered way to play. And the same arguement can be used on many games that simply half-ass the controller. Why bother if you're not going to do it right? Honestly, because it's most probably the best they could do at the time given the UI.
The game is made for a controller. If you haven't tried it yet, then I really suggest you do. You may be surprised. If you did try it, and disliked it, well, then you're stuck with whatever SE puts out. Like the patch notes for beta 3 say, though, they're overhauling the UI to make it easier for mouse/keyboard combo. I would wait and see how that pans out.
Edit: Oh. And I'll be playing this game because it lets me use a controller. I honestly wish all MMOs did. So much more comforable...
Most of the gaming I've done is on consoles, so good for me. Have a nice logitech rumblepad 2 ready for the occasion.
With that said, I'm not entirely sure why there couldn't be an option to remap keyboard configurations. Seems like something straightforward enough.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
Everyone understands that fully, in every way possible.
What you're not understanding is that handicapping to begin with is ridiculous. There should be zero reason for one setup to be superior to the other. It should be left up to choice, to the players. I'm comfortable either way, as i used a controler for XI, but i prefer mouse + kb.
But again, this is getting old. SE and everyone knows that most people are not happy with the controls and according to some, they are moving forward to accommodate. We'll wait and see.
The real question is, after they make it mouse friendly, will it still be controller friendly?
they will be working on a keyboard + mouse control for the PC, to do otherwise would be abject stupidity, as 99 percent of PC users at least, will be using that particular configuration, not everyone is at home using gamepads, their unwieldy, and you dont have a 'chat' option, which in an MMO, would be absolutely daft not to have, console players might be satisfied with not communicating in game, but for PC MMO players, its a requisite, and at least 50 percent of the game, might want to consider that for a moment, MMO players, wanting to communicate, the ability to do so in game, is one of the things that can make or break a game, and these days, built in voice comms, is also becoming a standard, although 3rd party programs imo, usually handle it better (TS3 & Ventrilo for instance) any game that handles any of these aspects in a half assed way is going to struggle imo, no matter how good the rest of the game is.
The games wasnt made just for a controller , it was made from the ground up , with Mouse / Keyboard / Controller in mind , get your facts right , it plays perfect on mouse and keyboard it just takes abit of getting used too , and that doesnt mean its ment for a controller it just means its diffrent from everyother twat out there.
Well i dont see how bad controls would stop u from using a keyboard for typing tho....
I always used Gamepad for my character/camera movement but a Keyboard for interacting with other ppls i mean only course u use a Gamepad u suddenly cant use the Keyboard anymore??
Maybe u think that u would have to let go of the Gamepad to type and that would slow u down but u kinda would have to let go of the Mouse when typing as well so its about the same
I'd still use a controller for most of the controls, cuz I just like to kick back and relax with my bluetooth controller. And if I need to type, something, I'd just use the keyboard.
Playing with keyboard only is the way to go.
Keyboard--> K/M / controller.
No point to use a mouse, and when they let us assing the keys for the keyboard thats all FFXIV really need.I play with controller becouse i can lay back and relax. But keyboard is all you need to be super effective as it is.
End of story, if you really need a mouse that much to enjoy the game , then dont play.
Silly statement is silly.
People take satisfaction out of different things. Asking for options that in no way affects anyone but the individual playing sounds fine to me.
To answer your question; anything but mouse camera movements is too slow for me. I can manage, but i shouldn't have to.
That is fine , but the silly coment was directed to the "omg if i cant play with K/M i wont even try it" people.
Theres a lot of threads about the damn thin over and over again , just face it is how it is.Is not "unplayable" only the mouse (atm) is.Hopefully for you guys ,as they said on stage 3 they would be fixing this.
Even then, while i am personally a big fan of controler, becouse of comfort , playing with keyboard only is still the most effective way of playing.Of course is always personal preference.
