I think because, in most cases, we are paying a recurring subscription and want value for our monthly fee. We feel entitled to continue to voice our opinions because our money is continuing to line the developers pockets.
Because you are looking at the one place where a lot of MMO whiners congregate, because they can no longer post in the dedicated forums of their own previous MMOs. Look at the dedicated forums for each game and you might see less of what goes on here, purely because those who are still subbing / can still post on the individual forums have a tendency to be a little more tolerant of the games flaws.
However, that's not to say that EVERYONE on here is a whiner. But nevertheless, there are those who enjoy in taking solice in bitching about every game that doesn't meet their own particular standard of what an MMO should be. Plus, such people love to jump to conclusions based on very little factual evidence. They yearn for the world to hear their plight and thus feel they have some limelight and attention when they bitch and moan.
I think because, in most cases, we are paying a recurring subscription and want value for our monthly fee. We feel entitled to continue to voice our opinions because our money is continuing to line the developers pockets.
Lol, yeah right.
It's because we have unrealistic expectations.
It's because we don't understand the games we play.
It's because we are addicted.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

Plus we often don't appreciate the constraints that are imposed on the development of these games. And I'm not just referring to publishers and shareholders.
My theory: We all have high expectations for the genre, but have seen very little in the way of quality games for far too many years. People love to complain anyways, now they just have a lot to complain about.
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb
@OP: Heh, yeah, I've been wondering about that too, especially since I'm not like that.
Here's my theory:
1. Most MMO gamers only really like 1, 2 MMO's, say a few MMO's at most at one time. That leaves out a LOT of MMO's that falls outside of their narrow range of tastes when you visit a generic MMO site as here, where all kinds of MMO's are being discussed. So that leaves all these other MMO's that they don't like that they vent, rant, and whine about to give air to their dislikes.
2. A lot of MMO gamers have become blase, tired with the whole MMO genre, added to that the disappointment that following hypes has caused them. They have become the equivalent of the cynical elitist movie critic (or art) that after years and years of being and operating in the business can only appreciate a narrow selection of movies (or art) that he deems superior above the rest of the movies, most of the rest he often regards as inferior entertainment for the masses/mainstream audience that can't appreciate or recognize better quality as he does.
3. People spend far, far more time in MMO's than on singleplayer games. The more time you dedicate to a MMO - to anything, any object of passion or liking actually -, the more emotionally invested you are. That means that if things aren't right or disappointments happen, that they also have a far larger impact on people than when it comes to other kind of games. So also a far bigger chance for bitterness, resentment or frustration to settle in.
It only doesn't explain why the amount of whiners, haters, trolls and fatalists is so much larger here on mmorpg.com than on other generic MMO sites like Massively or Gamasutra. Although you might say that the visiting audience for gamasutra is on average more serious and mature than here. But still.

The title of your post looks exactly like what you were complaining about. I have a feeling you made it that way on purpose, if you didn't however, then it is pretty ironic and funny.
I am entitled to my opinions, misspellings, and grammatical errors.
Every time I look around mmorpg forums its just people whining and complaining about the littlest things..
Why are some (well allot) mmorpg players so weird compared to other gamers >.>
Just stay positive anyway. As soon as the whiners get what they want, they'll just find something new to whine about. Now, I'm not talking about an honest critique...there is always a place for that. I'm sure that's not what you're referring to though.
Yeah, I wonder about this myself. It's not just MMO's they whine about, it's any subject that comes up. Something as simple as a title can cause many to fly off the handle. Such as the recent article on Games Bill Murphy thinks people want to hear more about. I blame it on a lack of sunshine....

Yeah, it's the same irony as saying 'I hate haters'
Still, the OP has a point: I've only visited the mmorpg.com for a few months and even I'm baffled and astounded about the abundance of whining, trolling, hating, whining and ranting that's going on on this site, that's on average far more than I've encountered on other generic MMO and game sites.

Well smarty pants. MMORPG players are online! They are all grouped up in this one mmorpg site called mmorpg.com. Considering the tens of millions of mmorpg players, or people visiting mmorpg.com on a daily basis, compared with the amount of "whiners" we really arn't too bad. Every genre has whining. But you don't hear people crying about pokemon unless you go to a pokemon website dedicated to the genre.
I think it's because this genre is so fragile, and it is impossible to please everyone with a single mmorpg. For example, I have seen atleast 10 threads where people try to describe what a sandbox mmorpg is, and everyone had different opinions, so ofcourse there will be some bitching when a developer releases what he feels is a sandbox mmorpg.
Again, this genre is much more complex than just shoot-em up games, and you need the lore, the graphics, the gameplay, the themepark, the sandbox and so on, so there is a lot of places the developer could make a mistake, and THAT'S where all the whiners come in.
Lets just face it, the internet has become a place for people with no power IRL, who wants to feel like they are someone. I'm not saying everyone in here is that way, but lots of people just hate, instead of giving constructive criticism, and that does get a bit overwhelming on this website every now and then.
Na, It aint the MMORPG players. ( why do you exclude MMOFPS, MMORTS and alike) .
Its the entire Online comunity. No connection to RL , no responsabily's moms and dads that are used to wine for along there bin tha internet and there kids now growing up getting active themselfs being compleet asshats online never learned to behave online as they would in RL.
before next generation we all be forced to use our RL names and ID's , might help a bit.

That is a terrible idea. I, along with probably the entire gaming community, play MMORPG's and video games in general so I can escape (if you will) my hum-drum reality. We don't want any connection between our games and RL, unless we're playing with friends.
Forcing us to use our real names and supply real identification to prove that's who we are is THE dumbest idea I have ever heard, in any situation.
I think some here are social misfits that have spent so much time in the hobby that they know nothing else. They find themselves gameless, or stuck in a game they are sick of (think WOW) but no other game works for them so they lament about what was or could be. Ive mentioned before the mentality of people that feel the need to be subbed to one game or another even when there isnt one that they enjoy. So they pick the one that comes closest to a pleasurable experience and sub to it and bitch about how sick of MMO's they are and wait for something that will keep them happy for awhile.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.
Because MMORPGs are SERIOUS BUSINESS! Or srs bsness for the WoW-folk.
Also, complaining is fun, lofty standards are to be expected, and the fact that we'll never have games like the old days can never be accepted (because honestly, we may start moving back in the sandbox direction if this development trend continues; at the very least, we'll see sandbox/themepark hybrids, which is personally what I think will be the most successful).
I see many gamers who fail to put into perspective the current game by itself and on its own merit.
They constantly compare to the "lame" game they just left, or played in the past. They're desperate for a new game but don't give it much chance because it's "not like wow" or "doesn't give me the customization of CoH", or "crafting too different from Aion". so therefore it sucks.
News flash for them guys... The games are different. thats the reason you left the "other" game. You wanted something different, and here you are.
I think because, in most cases, we are paying a recurring subscription and want value for our monthly fee. We feel entitled to continue to voice our opinions because our money is continuing to line the developers pockets.
This..
...and because people are tired of half-baked MMOs. I guess it's better to wait 6 months and see if a trial is available, also by that time the devs probably patched the game with the missing content thatw as suppose to be at launch.
Some people whine because John Smedley snuck into their houses and touched them in a bad place. Others whine because John Smedley didn't sneak into their houses and do anything to give them something to whine about.

I'd have to agree.
You would still get whiners/complainers coming here even if it was possible to have a Matrix like setup to play MMO's or any game for that matter, the major complaint no doubt would be "It's not immersive enough" .
You can't please everyone, just the ones who pay to play.
Well I feel no need to say why, because everyone else has already covered it so well. But I can say why single player gamers don't complain; that would be because their game is already finished, and for console games, it's pretty much you get what you get. They make the game and there's nothing you can do to change it.
