I don't see how they are going to add them without them sticking out like a sore thumb in the game world. Hey look a Norn warrior charging up on us with a giant swo...oh wait he got shot in the head *climax averted*

Though it isn't totally and completely accurate, they are basing it off of times when industry and gun were nearly just introduced. I'm not sure you played the first one, but gun powder and keg bombs were all over the place. It' isn't as if someone invented a gun, then the next day everyone suddenly had them. At one point in time, guns did battle with sowrds, though they weren't exactly trustful or anything.
I tend to think of it as... a time roughly like Zorro, or Pirates of the Carribean. Swords and guns both have a great affect on those atmosphere.
Of course, there are rangers and norns, whom (for the most part) don't fancy technology too much.
I think it's a nice addition.... and I've seen concept art of the guns.. it makes sense and doesn't stick out like a sore thumb or anything. Plus with the char and Asura and their advanced technology/engineering... and yeah.. it fits... I mean I kinda don't like guns but w/e it'll be cool with an engineering class I think.
So a heavy can do spike dammage with a likely long cooldown. Not the end of the world. Easy item to tweek, as not to be op. I think it would be more fun than chucking a spear for the same effect. We'll see how well it's implimented. I'm causiously for it.

Guns are lame i hate them in fantasy games, might aswell start adding motorcycles and shit like in WoW, its so lame and ruins immersion for me But thats my opinion

well it would be a slower gun, and an inaccurate one. it takes a long time to aim, and reload :P its great for fantasy games

Same here, I can't stand any mmo that has guns.

i don't mind seeing guns ingame, but i agree motorcycles are a bit much. then again there are already robots or golems or w/e they are.
I saw an interesting idea on what guns will be like in another thread where guns were mentioned... check it out here. I see this a lot in anime and manga, and it would be cool an less immersion-breaking (for some people). I personally have no problem with guns in GW2. As was previously mentioned, there was already gun-powder in the previous game. So it stands to reason that some sort of gunpowder/magic-based gun-type weapon would have been invented given the Asura's knowledge and technology, the Charr's industrial revolution, and the fact 250 years has passed since the first game. Looking forward to see what their "twist" on guns are.
I don't really have an issue with guns in fantasy settings, since they will most likely be climsy old-timey models. Is there a big problem with devs putting AK-47s in their fantasy games that I'm not aware of?
I have thrown a fireball in GW and not killed someone instantly. You think a gun can do better?
Seriously, in almost all games, weapons do far less damage than is realistic. That is to help keep it fun. Outside of FPS games, if a gunshot could one-shot, there would be a lot less fun, because people could be killed without a fight, and that is not what MMOs are about.

I'm normally not that keen on firearms etc in high fantasy either, but in GW2 case, there is a lot of architecture and other such eg in the vids some winged-sails and windmills and gears that shows an emerging understanding of technology, so from the pov as someone else put it "pirates of caribbean" or the Age of Discovery mixed with sword and sorcery if done well and fits the timeline and other designs it should actually add another layer to the gameworld that's well-thought out and eniches the world-building and of course most importantly the combat too.
I think overall like all the other aspects of MMO concepts the designers are trying to pave some new and fresh grounds with the world-building, also. The we're now 250yrs in the future is a cool and big leap forward in their lore and storytelling telling that allows this direction to be explored or angled into the picture?

Yea, but GW isn't just a fantasy setting, there's technology as well. The technology was kept to a minimum in the first game, but has evolved a lot in the 250 years up to GW2. I also think Arenanet is very aware of the 'feel' their technology will have, as they will keep it kind of crude. The Asura have magical technology which might be more advanced.
I think this pic is concerning the synergy between guns (charr usage good 'ol blackpowder) and elementalist's Static field as another grouped skill combo charging the rifle ball projectile.
As to the new gun-toting class: Think the "twist" on this mechanic will be a Magic Gun able to fire weird things that have very particular effects!
Which is the 4th Profession reveal? No idea at all. but unveiled this week.
Guns are perfectly fine for the GW world. There were cannons in the first game and this game will be 250 years ahead in the timeline so the technology will be more advanced. Plus I don't really think the world as a medieval setting, more like a renaissance era.
Guns sound like a nice addition to GW imo. GW2 is 250 years in the future, they've added the technologically adept Asura race, etc. Can't wait to see how the gun-using class shapes up as it's one of the 2 unknown profs at this point in time. (Yes, there's 5 that still haven't been revealed, but seriously we know 3 of those).

I guess it depends on who I feel like shooting any particular day.
I wish I lived in Texas where they are legal to carry around.

so long as the gun is not a musket. it has to be a somewhat medium speed gun.
i mean i cant see: fire, then take 30 secs to reload then fire.
but then again a musket could be used like this: fire, switch to melee

I really have no idea what to think yet. Hopefully they'll reveal much more and the unique twist in the coming days.
YAR pirate class FTW

There's fucking lighting bolts, fireball and PUS IN YOUR LUNGS disease spells.
How is the idea of firearms anticlimactic when that stuff never really ever killed anything but gray mobs in a MMORPG in one hit?
I kill other players because they're smarter than AI, sometimes.

Also, here is some concept art of what the guns will look like: http://www.guildwars2guru.com/forum/guild-wars-2-possible-gun-t561.html. Enjoy.

I would so love the pirate/witchunter whatever you call it but a class using guns and swords and wearing hats!! Please I want it soooo badly:D
I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them
