yea it did... square even annunced it unless that was characters made
I know what announcment your talking about, and its all in the wording. It didnt say accounts, it didnt say subs, it said characters. Characters=/=Subs. So that was kind of a deceptive announcement from SE. Very easy to take it the wrong way.

It will probably never reach WoW numbers, it's not a wide appealing game, it's focus was on it's particular niche and that is who it will cater to. The combat in final fantasy is about timing, execution, and team set up. Sounds like every other game but the combat is actually tremendously strategic, unlike that of WoW where only boss fights require strategy. Every monster in Final Fantasy requires strategy, boss mobs even more so.
We'll probably know how big the game is by the end of March next year.
I'm going with it being 700k-1M... The market is a lot bigger now than when FFXI came out so on average if it keeps a good core fan base like FFXI did, then it will be 500k 8 years from now.
120k will keep you alive but I think 500k is the easily predicted goal here. beside SWKOTOR and GW2 (Which really doesnt count) I see a clear future for this game. On another side not its niche so it has its own fanbase ready made to eat it up.
If the japanese understands that a korean grinder is not what we want then it could grow to a couple of million subs but if they are arrogant it will not.
All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.
from what i've seen of the beta (lower lvls ofc) it seems to be far less grindy, add in the reduced down time caused from the skill based setup and you have a solo/group friendly game.
i can see it doing better than ffxi pushing 1mill subs and maintaining that provided subsequent games aimed at an asain market aren't as successful, i.e tera, C9, blade and soul. Its an ideal release date imo they'll get plenty of subs initially and it gives them a nice cushion to try and maintain that interest.

I gotta agree with you on the release here. It seems like a smart time to release since they can gobble up subs from games that are somewhat failing (like aion in the West) and games that are set to come out soon but not there yet (like GW2). The only big issue is getting their pop from FFXi over to FFXIV once that is done I think they are golden.
FFXIV for many people is a temporary game. Everyone I know who plans to try out FFXIV plans to leave it no matter how good it is for either Tera, Telara, GW2 or SWTOR.

Just like people left WoW for Aion and WAR, haha

I'm actually in this boat, and so are about 40 or so of my old school FFXI friends from back in '04, that are planning on returning to SE's world.
It's not that i think XIV will be a bad game, it just doesn't have everything that i'm looking for at this stage in my gaming life. I'll give everything a fair amount of time to make the best decision that i can of course.
I'm not looking for a game, i'm looking for a home for the next some odd years, and i don't like to jump around between them.
I don't think it will be too huge on PC, but I think it will do very well on PS3. FFXI had a stable 500k for a very long time, and this was in a time when it required like 100$ of extra peripherals for your PS2 to play it and when not many people had their consoles online.
Now consoles everywhere are online and streaming content. It really is a great time to hit the consoles with an MMORPG. Also FFXIV, like FFXI, is clearly designed as a console MMORPG with a PC port the way the controls are just setup for a controller. Maybe it runs better and looks better on PC but the UI and gameplay is designed around a controller.
I bet it either sits around 500k like FFXI or gets a nice boost from console MMO'ers. I know that I love playing my MMO's on my couch on a console with a controller. It is a shame there are so few options.

I am surprised you think any of the games listed will entertain you for some odd years. All of these games that have been released are epicly shallow and boring and probably hold the average person for 2-3 months. Aside from WoW, FFXI was the only game I know of that actually held players for years on end. I would say hands down FFXIV has the best chance to pull that off from any of the listed.
You have a no sub semi MMORPG, a korean grind fest, a single player story driven mmorpg, and another WoW clone... Maybe it's just me but there isn't anything besides FFXIV that even interests me on the MMO front besides something like World of Darkness from CCP or Blizzards next MMO.

You may be absolutely correct and only time will tell.
I'll take Tera out of the equation because i honestly have no interest what's so ever. Rift and GW2 are going the persistent world route which should be interesting. They also both have and are built for PVP, which is an important side aspect for me. How meaningful and to what extent is too early to tell, but it's there. I also love the team behind Rift building their game and main forums around the community first.
TOR scares me as much or if not more than anything else. I honestly don't know what to expect but i'm a SW dork, since i'm old, so i'll see when i see i guess. If it turns out to be a single player game then i will not hesitate to walk away.
I'll play what ever i consider the best game that suits my needs and the one that keeps me hooked the longest, regardless of the "brand name" on the cover.

Don't underestimate that people have more options than in 2002. Rift, GW2, and TOR drop in Spring '11.
I could see it holding around 500k, which is fine.

Define 'utter failure'. Else it's a meaningless comment.

Im betting under 300k by this time next year.. or less
I'll take that bet.
200k then 100k then 50k then die like FF11
300k - 500k subs for almost 8 years sure is dead.
I personally don't see over 500k after 6 months when there will be 2 new fantasy MMO's, but let's not make ridiculous statements.

The amount of content and how fast the game is updated is ultimately going to decide whether we will play these games for 2 weeks or 2 years.
