..I'm kinda worried about really getting into, and enjoying everything in the game. The rift system, dynamic dungeons, class mixing all sound like great reasons to play the game, but the factions and classes are kinda of pushing me away.
This strikes me as a lore-heavy game from how it looks and from what I've read. I personally don't like the Defiance faction, since it seems like the typical "rebel" side. Without reading into a lot of the lore of Aion, WoW, and Rift, they all essentially have the same type of faction. The Guardians' lore isn't fleshed out enough and I can't really picture myself playing one, yet. I feel like I'll be forced to pick a faction that I personally think is cheesy/overdone or a faction that doesn't exactly suit me or I feel like I'm picking just because I like it more than the other.
I can't comment on the races, since they aren't all released yet, and the ones that are shown in-game are pretty generic, which isn't a bad thing. This will most likely be the deciding factor on factions for me, and a lot of others.
I'm sad to find that the Reaver class is turning out to be more of a tanking class, I would of preferred a support DPS/offtank DPS. While I'm sure it'll be viable in a lot of ways when paired with other classes, I can't help but feel disappointed in the same way when I found that the Dark Templar in Age of Conan was a main tank class.
These are just a few things that bother me. They aren't game-breaking in any way and I know I can't judge the game in until I play it for a bit.
I just feel a little disappointed that a few things are the way they are, but I still can't wait to try it out.
Is there anything that you would change about the game from what you've read so far?

The class system is pick and mix, I bet very few will go for a pure class when there will be 3 soul trees available at end game.
Faction choice will be more down to what class(es) you want to play, since warlock is defiant only and paladin is guardian only.
I agree that the faction choices are a tad 'luke warm' though, dwarves and goody- two -shoes elves on one side and slightly more butch humans and not quite dark elves on the other.
Reaver was my main choice of class though, from the classes that are released now, I honestly don't like any of them.
The more they release on this game, the less interested I get.
Can only hope for positive reviews later, I guess.
Funny, it's the opposite for me.
What you have complained about is basically factions that you admit we don't know much about yet, and the fact one soul (the reaver) isnt the type of class you want to play...
You seem to be missing that if you want to play this class as an off tank type you just mix it up with some DPS from another more attack based class. You are free to build it as you wish within your calling. You seem to be stuck in the 1 class mentality of other games.
All the articles for this game I have read so far have been pretty positive to very enthusiastic, especially for a ALPHA stage game.
well I have to agree on the factions seeming a bit bland right now.... but for me the character system, the art style and what Rifts promise to bring to the game make up for it completely...
one really positive thing: Trion actually managed to make the Dwarfs look cool, instead of them looking like fat little bumbling baboons.... i might even consider playing a dwarf in this game.. oh the horror ^^

Yeah, they still have quite a few warrior classes to reveal yet. There is bound to be a dps (read as fury/arms warrior) type model available.
The way I see it from the many previews so far, is whatever role you want to play is going to to be available. Maybe not straight off the bat though. It is possible some of the soul trees people are gonna desire will take some effort to get, but thats what quality mmo's are all about- effort vs reward should be on a par!
I feel the exact opposite :-) I love it more and more....cant wait.
The more they release on this game, the less interested I get.......................in FFXIV, which I've been looking forward to for a year now. I'm gonna have to try them both out then decide I guess but Rifts is pulling way way ahead in terms of getting my interest right now.
You and me both brotha.
The lore is extremely generic for this, but it's not a big deal.
It probably should have been expected given that a lot of former EQ2 developers are behind it and EQ2 has quite possibly the worst lore and immersion of any of the 30 or so MMOs I've tried. I think they just treat it as "crap to make up to justify gameplay". As bad as it sounds, it hasn't stopped me from enjoying EQ2 for 6 years now as it had good systems and gameplay.
This won't be a game where I plan to Roleplay and try to get into "living in the world". This will hopefully be a game with really cool group and raid content, some of which is dynamic and constantly exciting to be a part of.
You can't have everything and the fact is, not all games are going to have amazing lore and an immersive world.

What about those Rifts/Portals? You have to agree that it's a cool lore aspect.
not really tbh. there are only so many different ways you can make dynamic content appear in the middle of the world. either ships drop them off (AO, TR) , you go through some kind of door (CoH, AO) or they appear out of nowhere (SWG / Rift).
I mean, it's a cool gameplay feature. But lore-wise here is nothing particularly original about saying "where did this mob appear from? oh.. he came through a planar portal!".

EQ2 has the worst lore and immersion of any of the 30 or so MMOs you have tried? You've played Runescape 30 times I take it then?
EQ2 had the wealth of lore behind EQ, a franchise with over 6 years behind it at the time of EQ2's release. They had Heritage quests, race history quests, class history quests, language quests and many more quests that touched on the world of Norrath. I might agree with you a little that the zones didn't always have the immersion of some other titles but it was up there with the best.
If EQ2 is what you are basing your argument for Rift having a bad approach to lore, then you need to think again sonny Jim. Rift's lore is phenomenal and they have two full time lore writers on the team. They have designed lore, from the ground up, for every aspect of the world of Telara and they have a story arcing back thousands of years. It may not be a fully fleshed out world that has been worked on for decades but it's a brand new IP with a lot of ideas.
On to the team being predominantly from EQ2. That's not true. There was an early video in which Scott Hartsmann (yes, he's from EQ2) detailed the background the team has. There is a lot of people from console gaming and there is a lot of people from MMOs. I may have to find the quote but Scott said something along the lines of them being able to total up all the MMOs the team has worked on and it comes to something like 27. So they have a wealth of experience from across the genre. They have said they can implement a new idea and because of the wealth of experience it is as a good as a beta idea straight off the bat.
Add that to the fact that you've said you can enjoy the other aspects of the game and, voila, we have quality.
.
Oh and there are two comic books detailing the lore of Telara coming from Wildstorm comics in October and in the new year.
A game without detailed lore won't have a comic book.
.
Dont worry so much about the reaver class, or any of them for that matter if you're thinking along those lines. Whatever the class's primary role is, tank/healer/support, everyone will find a way to "DPS" with em, and to cater to everyone's needs, the devs will make that possible. Look at all the games that have been out, imagine a healer archtype that totally has no dps, runs around shooting peas, u can already expect almost noone to want to play it.

I can't decide what I should think about this game. Some things do look promising while others make me feel that I have seen it all before and I do not want to bother doing it again. But I'll probably wait and see what people say about the game after release and try it out if they're somewhat good. Problem with that strategy is that there are more haters than lovers no matter what game they talk about in these forums so you need to be able to read between the lines.
