This might not fresh enough. However, i would like to know about it.
I never paid for any F2P games yet. I am not sure if i will. Personally, i think those games are totally pay 2 win. And i know, i am not going to spend like crazy.

$9.95 in 8 months of DDO and $9.99 in a years of WWO: Gunfighter. Have never felt the need to spend more nor have I ever looked at these 2 in a Pay to Win view.
SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter
I bought a couple classes and the Drow race on DDO. Other than that I've never used a cash shop in an F2P game.
15$ on SMT
10$ on DFO

I did $10 - $25 every 90 days when I played Maple Story three years ago. I liked the cosmetic cash shop model they had. The game has completely flipped upside down in the past few years though.
On a side note. I now find myself sometimes paying for ISK in EVE Online now that they introduced the legal in game currency for cash method.
I purchased some increased pack space in one game. When I found that only applied to one avatar and not all I stopped playing. I've still got $10-$15 worth of cash shop money sitting in that account that will never be spent.
Yes I have. If there is an F2P game that I enjoy enough, I will support the developers and buy stuff. Well, that and I'm a sucker for cosmetic Cash Items. : D

Nope. If the game says "Free to Play", then that's how I play it: free.
If they really want money, then they should stop giving their games silly misnomers.

DDO and ROM, maybe $40 bucks each. I played both for several months and still suggest them for others.
I suppose GW also counts in this. About $20 there just for the box. Never anything cash shop.
Most common misconception. Free to play means just that, free to play. Hey, look, you didn't have to pay to use the game! No misnomer there. The items are there if you want them, nobody is forcing you.

I bought stuff off and on for Jade Dynasty-- bag and bank space for various characters, mainly. I bought a pet for one character when it was marked down to $5 on sale, and I did come off of $20 at one point for a skyblade (flying sword)... But I played the game for about 9 months, and I didn't spend money every month. It was more expensive than a sub game in one or two months, and a lot cheaper (free, even) in others.
I did spend a few bucks on lotto boxes (i.e. random item boxes), but since I was often looking for the consolation prizes (celebeans!), I was never one to dump tons of money into them hoping to get something good.
Once I got to higher levels and the (in-game) gold came easier, I usually either bought cash shop stuff from other players with that, or bought the cash shop credit from other players (which that game allowed).
It's all about setting limits and choosing your own priorities. If you have to keep up with the Joneses, you'll spend a ton for sure, because there's always someone out there with more money than sense.
I've never played any free to play game that I really liked. For the most part they are all the same (with a few exceptions) and if I want tab-targetting and hotkey combat I'll play Guild Wars since I already bought that. The closest that I've come to buying stuff from a free to play game is buying tickets on Magic: The Gathering Online.

80-100 on League of Legends if we're counting non-MMORPGs. Given how many hours I've played it, the cost-per-hour comes out to be significantly lower than a typical MMORPG for me.

I've deposited a few times into Entropia Universe (mostly when it was still called Project Entropia), but it averaged out to a bit less than a 15 dollar a month sub would have. A ten dollar deposit in Entropia doesn't go far enough for me to make Entropia my main game, but it's still fun to play, and it's cheaper to hop in and play a bit, then go back to playing Fallen Earth than it is to maintain two subs.
I look on free to play games like Entropia as good for when I'm in between games, or good for when I run out of rifle ammo and I have a massive queue of other stuff to finish before I can make more. Definately worth a few dollars a month, but not something I'm going to go crazy in and start buying houses and space stations and... wait, who am I kidding? Even if I wanted to, I couldn't afford to buy a space station, a house, the next planet, an island, or whatever else will be sold next.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

What items? We weren't talking about any items. Just about free to play games and money... Which doesn't make any sense yes. Why pay for something that is free?
If someone wants money they should be asking for it - it's not something to be ashamed of. People die on the streets for not having enough money.

I love the "principles" that you people have over this. In one hand you are determined to play for free, in the other, you are determined that it's not even worth your time in playing them. Entitlement at it's best.

Nope, not once in well over 4 years of playing f2p's.
I think it all depends on what you play these games for though, if it's just for pure fun and the PvE expirence then you're ussually safe (not always), but when all a person cares about is the PvP then it is more likely to cost you (and again, not always).
There aren't too many f2p mmorpg's that allow competetive gaming without spending a dime though, but there are some, would probably say the most common of those come in the form of games that allow you to allocate your own stat/attribute points every level, at the very least with those type of game the cashshop doesn't play as much as an important role - a poorly built cashshop character will always lose to a well built free character ;D~
You are a trip and a half.
They *are* free to play, you can play them all you want without a dime, and evidently you do. Having some kind of vendetta out for them [while] playing them says squat about your principles - in fact, I think you have none whatsoever.

I played a browser game called Greopolis and spent about 10 bucks while playing it. i havent bought any extras really, while playing warcraft i used all of the paid services ( faction change etc..). No shiny mounts or pets fromt he cash shop though.
The only other things ive paid extra for was a couple extra charcter slots in FFXI
So it's purely a label that prevents you from paying and playing these games, even though you clearly understand the concept and there being no difference between the two different labels you've chosen to use.
Let me try to put this into different terms, just humor me (i'm bored :P) But say you won draw for some fancy red car, and you had no problem with paying the taxes on it, would you not want it still if it turned out to be cherry red instead of just red?
I don't understand where that mentality is coming from.
Yes i paid around 2-3k$ for f2p games.
Great.
Expect to be quoted by all the haters as the prime example of how much it costs to play these things. They love toting a single case of being spendthrift as a widespread panic.

I occasionally bought a few items here or there on F2Ps, mostly permanent extensions of some sort (extra slots, inventory, races or classes), i.e. i spent some $10-15 on Atlantica for extra merc storage, and the same amount on DDO for something alike. Never spent more than 20$ for any F2P regardless of how much i played it. I also never buy temporary stuff or consumables or items, only permanent services.
there are thousands of "single cases" out there fyi.
there are plenty of news about people spending a few grands in F2P games
the saddest part is that news always name the top spenders, they seem to forget that if the top 1 guy spent 4k, the other 49 in the top 50 spent between 1k and 3k....
so yeah, keep your "its more rare than white rhinos" lies to yourself
Haven't paid any money towards a F2P title of any sorts yet, but I can't stomach most of the cash shop games long enough to justify it. To each their own, but I'm still waiting for that F2P title to come along that'll change my tune up.
I have only paid about $4 in order to reset my skill points in that Zork browser game which has really nothing in common with the original Zork games.
So I wasted four dollars but lesson learned and I haven't paid a cent on all those F2P games that I have tried over the years.
All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.
