Is LOTRO for me???

honourswordhonoursword Member UncommonPosts: 82

Hi all, hope you’re good!!!

I am currently playing WOW and have been ever since the collapse of the awesome game that was SWG. Since then WOW has been my home and I haven’t had any game draw me away from it.

I have tried Conan, Aion, Warhammer, STO and LOTRO when it very first came out. None of them had anything that really grabbed me. LOTRO was ok but I found it to be just a copy of WOW with a different face.

I am heavily into RP and saw a number of people on a WOW forum say that LOTRO is now awesome for RP. This got me interested and I am seriously thinking about giving LOTRO another go. However, can someone answer the following questions for me?

  • What is the player base generally like? Friendly? Helpful? Rude? Selfish? (Generalising I know but your experiences would be helpful)

  • What is the RP like on LOTRO? Is it widespread? Are there military clans? (I believe that’s what guilds are called in LOTRO)

  • What is the player housing like? Can you invite people into your home? Setup a shop? (Like you could in SWG)

  • I know PVP was limited to non-existent when I played, has this changed now? Is there any open world PVP?

Any other information would also be helpful. And hopefully I will see you in game.

Thanks

Your experience with the community will depend on how much you use global chat channels, your guild, your zone, the server you choose and the time of day. I always had a good experience with the population and finding a decent guild. But with the incoming F2P change, the quality of the community will more than likely take a shot due to the ease of requirement ingame. Not the end of the world I imagine, tho.

    • What is the RP like on LOTRO? Is it widespread? Are there military clans? (I believe that’s what guilds are called in LOTRO) Guilds are called Kinships in LoTRO, but my experience with RP in the game is about like my experience with WOW. I don't RP, and I don't see a lot of it happening in general. But I also don't put myself out there with the community that indulges in the RP. I imagine based off the IP alone there's hardcore RP'rs you could find easily, tho.

    • What is the player housing like? Can you invite people into your home? Setup a shop? (Like you could in SWG) I honestly don't remember if you can invite to your house. But a thing to keep in mind is that each "neighborhood" or housing settlement is entirely instanced. You will zone into your own private version of the housing settlement you share with a handful of other people. You can decorate and whathaveyou, but setting up vendors and such as in other (more sandboxish) titles doesn't take place here. Or didn't when I played last.

    • I know PVP was limited to non-existent when I played, has this changed now? Is there any open world PVP? Again, it's been the better part of a year since I played last, but I believe PVP is restricted to the PVP zones and there is no planned open world PVP to be implemented.

I've played LoTRO off and on since launch, never for more than a month or two at a time, tho. Still, I think I can sufficiently answer some of your questions.

    • Friendly but can be elitistic. We will see what happens when F2P launch.

    • What is the RP like on LOTRO? Is it widespread? Are there military clans? (I believe that’s what guilds are called in LOTRO)

    • I dont RP but I know that the RP community is strong in LotrO and there are alot of features that supports RPers.

    • What is the player housing like? Can you invite people into your home? Setup a shop? (Like you could in SWG)

    • Housing is basic and instances. You can invite people but cant setup a shop.

    • I know PVP was limited to non-existent when I played, has this changed now? Is there any open world PVP? PvP is still restricted to 1 zone and is a fun side game. Probably the biggest reason why the community is more mature/friendly than other MMOs.

LotrO is like a more mature relaxed version of WoW with more focus on story and immersion imo. They are simillar but the more you play the more differences you find.

    Thanks

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin

I too am like you. I have searched for an MMO to settle down with and call home since the death of SWG and I have yet to do so. I have played all of the ones you have tried and have enjoyed them but nothing has matched the awesomeness of SWG pre NGE.

While I am waiting patiently for SW:ToR I am flitting between MMOs like a humming bird on heat. I have recently played LotRO, AoC and WoW again and I found LotRO to be the most laid back and a little mundane at times but the community is the best, but it is a little unsettled atm due to the current transition it is giong through from subscription to free to play.

I would wait till it goes to F2P in the autumn and try something else. AoC is better now than it was before but still has some issues but is a fun game and WoW is well, WoW as we all know it to be. Even the SWG EMU is ready to play but is only in beta and will not be ready for quite some time yet.

Landroval is LotRO's unofficial RP server. There are lots of rpers there and rp events going on regularly.Theres player housing, music system, titles, and you can dye your clothes as well as a cosmetic equip which toggles on or off if you want to replace your armor appearance with your cosmetic equipment.Theres lots of differant clothing so no one looks alike.Lots of emotes too.Definately one of the more RP friendly games out there.

Right now the LOTRO community is top knotch when it comes to being a friendly, and helpful community. That may change once it goes F2P though.

I don't participate in RP when I play LOTRO but if you look at their forums you will be able to find what you are looking for there.

You can have people visit your house but there is no shop to be set up there. Houses in LORTO are for show and storage only.

No open world PvP. They have a zone for that where you can be either a free person or a monster. It would be awesome if they made the game open world PvP but I'm sure they'd need an expansion to do it. If PvP is very important to you than this is not going to be a game for you. I can take or leave PvP so it's no bother for me.

I pretty much echo what others have said.  I enjoy it and it has a great community and if you find a great guild, thats just icing on the cake.

I can't speak for how the community will be after it goes f2p.  If you want something to tide you over until SW: TOR comes out, give it a shot.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

LotrO has one of the best communities, imo.  Landroval is the unofficial RP server, but you can find other RP'ers on other servers by simply looking at their names.  People who choose to RP have their name in white, those who choose not to RP are in yellowish.  The light bluish color is your kin.  If you look on the LotRO boards, you may find some kinships that RP.  Just try the trial and see if you like it.  =)

LotRO has (for the most part) a great community. I personally haven't come across anybody who is just plain mean, and monst people will be willing to help new players

The RP in this game is quite strong in Landroval, and you will still find a fair bit in other servers too. If by "military" you mean raiders, then yes, there are some strong raiding Kinships. There are also a great many casual Kins, and some(like mine) are casual-raiders. I'm sure there are some that are dedicated to RP, though I never do RP, so I wouldn't know for certain.

The housing system is very basic, you buy a house, pay rent, and put stuff in it. There are a couple cool items that you can put in that have special effects(e.g. Beer kegs can teleport you to random places in the world, drunk, and pantless), though most of it is just for decoration. You can also put chests in your house, which allows for more storage outside of your vault.

PvMP (at least from what I've seen), isn't too popular, though there are still quite a few people who like to go in just for a change of pace from the PvE. The Creeps(Monster Players) usually win, though every once in a while a Freep(Free Peoples) raid will come in and capture a few points. It is usually very unorganized on the Freep side of things, from what I've seen. (these points may be different on different servers).

    Hope this helps!

People in this game are pretty much stuck up.  Condecending to the point of being rude, largely insular and won't help much.

Just last night, someone asked where to buy a goat in Moria.  He was met with silence, then with something like "If you don't know, then you can't buy one". When I told him, people got mad at me.

That said, if you like role-playing, there is plenty of it on the server I play on, Landroval.

    PvP hasn't changed.

Housing is pretty sad. You can buy a house in an instance. There are like 12 different houses in each subdivision instance, and there are different subdivision types for each race.

You have a chest (or two, depending on the size of the house) that you can store stuff in. You can decorate, a little bit, there are a few spaces in the house and yard that you can put objects on.  Like I have a christmas tree (which I probably should take down, but storage space is severely limited in the game) and a garden dwarf.

Inside I have a bed, a rug, a chair and a bookshelf. None of which actually do anything. Kind of a spartan looking house, actually.

You can invite people over. Why you would, I dunno. I have never seen another person in my neighborhood, ever.  The main reason to visit your house is you can teleport to it, and you can get a discount on crafting materials there (20% off, so worth the hassle).

R.I.P. City of Heroes and my 17 characters there

Please don't take offense but, man, you have to be a troll. Lotro has THEE BEST community of any of the 20+ mmos I have ever played. I no longer play because the game just is not for me but I have never, once, encountered a rude person or what you have stated in your reply. Lotro has the best community. Who knows how it will be when it goes F2P but your dissection of the community is wrong, man. Again I am not being rude. Lotro, FE, EQ = best communities. I subbed, for a few months, because of the community. Very nice, very helpful, and very kind. This is just 100% wrong. Best community in an MMO...ever!

He have been posting the same thing over and over for the last couple of years.

Makes you wonder if its the community that is the problem or... something else. I mean, most people say that LotrO have one of the most friendly/mature communities, and he is alone thinking its the worst. Isnt it time to take a look in the mirror then?

I just came back to LOTRO after a year break, i never managed to get higher than 35 because i hate the areas from 35-45. Now i'm almost 53 and i ask a lot of questions in the global chat and in my kin chat...i even asked the goat question on Brandywine server since i wanted to use a mount in Moria and people answered me nicely...i don't know why you say that the community can be rude....from what i see on my server, the community is the best i've seen in a MMO.

Yeah, and the other hobby-horse trolling is the "lack of quests", at any level - when anyone who has played lotro above 50 knows that you can actually never run out of quests, even soloable ones. Makes you think there is an agenda there.
