there is population in starter cities, a few noobs, then some players scattered around
bear in mind that a full pvp game like DF would be nightmare if densely populated
Weird, when i read forumfall i see posts which say the starter towns are deserted and only the player citys hold players :x
I guess its just another subjectif opinion like yours, which doesnt say anything except your personal "view", which doesnt have to be true.
Recently i visited NPC starter cities and i can verify his observation, never was a place empty there were always some chars on trial with newb protection and or unclanned running around the city. This was on EU and human lands (i think human lands play a role in that tho being usually the most populated newbie zone )

Dalaran city in the game world of warcraft in any server, has more population then all DF has at primetime.
But then again..DF is a niche game.
Just try it and if you like it just play it...dont think about population..because it will never have a high population...a few hundread players online at most at prime time...

Is it really that bad? Well I guess I'll find out soon enough but only having a few hundred in a massive world seems kinda lame.
You need to understand there are players giving you opinions on this and many things here that genuinely do not know. Many of them don't play the game. The world is HUGE, so it's very easy, depending on where you are to feel like population is less than it is. There is not a chance it is 200. Just get a mount and ride over to player cities & hamlets and in the course of an hour without going very far you'll see 200 players. Go see for yourself and stay as far away from message boards as you can. You'll quickly learn the experience in game and on message boards usually have little relationship to each other.
Good luck. -CC

Im currently away from home without the possibility to try it out yet, so its going to be a few days before I can start on this one. I'm trying to sift through the rubbish and get some information on this game before I start with it. It certianly appeals to me, what with the elderscrolls style combat and open pvp. I am looking forward to giving this one a go and would now if this pathetic countries internet service was not so painfully slow.
I've heard that players can play on both EU and NA servers, if this is true is it possible to transfer your character to a different server having established yourself in one?

You can transfer but it costs something, i think its around 15 USD (never did it so excuse me if not exactly). You can't transfer items with you just your char but including earned stats and skills. Also the clients versions are regional, there is one for NA and one for EU.

You can find action on EU if you know where to look for it. The problem many have is the world is so large and they have no idea where the hotspots are.
That being said i'd be a liar if I called it a 'populated' mmo.
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
i would suggest people play what they like to play regardless of population.
besides, for free they can figure it out for themselves with the free trial.
Population being one of the most important thing for a PvP game, OP needs to consider wether or not he wants to join a game based on how many players play, or possibly try his luck on the NA server, but given the time zone difference, it's up to him.
EU isn't "THAT" empty, but the active population is lower than NA I believe. So it's something that you should consider.

Over 90% inactive on EU-1. If you're a new player and considering the game, stay away from it.
LOL
you never played on EU eh?
i play on it on a daily basis...
