Just started it.

I was in a bit of a funk about MMOs in general - couldn't find one that really satisfied me.  I had a great time with CO for a couple of months then suddenly got bored with it.  Last time I resubbed with AoC, I still enjoyed it, but I'm not always in the mood for it.  It's a now-and-then type of game.  Vanguard is a fantastic (albeit still a bit buggy and incomplete) MMO, but totally deserted, and has no developer action any more at all.  Last one I tried was DDO, which has great depth to the toon building (of course!) and has very nice, fairly complex instanced dungeons (lots to learn there).  A great game, but not quite my cup of tea.  You can't get that sense of wandering a vast world from it.  Also, it has this peculiar problem in that you have to learn these fairly complex dungeons, and to do that it's nice to go through them slowly, but since most people playing are vets, they rush through a lot of the time, and you don't get a chance to smell the roses unless you specifically join a Guild that's oriented around that.

So I was tootling around some forums, and the amount of positive talk about Fallen Earth somehow registered on my mind.  I'd clocked it last year, checked the screenies, thought the gameplay looked interesting, but the graphics looked a bit duff, and I wasn't sure (since I am, sadly a graphics whore).  Some early reviews mentioned bugginess and lack of polish, and I wasn't in the mood for coping with the foibles of a non-AAA title at that time.

But the other day, almost in a fit of pique, I just took the plunge and downloaded the FE trial.

Damn, I couldn't stop playing it for about 10 hours straight this weekend!

It's amazing!  I'd put it on a par with EVE online as a brilliant, sandboxy niche MMO.  It has similar depth and longevity feel, but miles better PvE.  The lore is surprisingly well developed and feels nice and rich as a background context.  The quests are, again, surprisingly well-written, with much black humour.

It actually feels more Fallout-ey than Fallout 3 did (though of course F3 was a good game in its own right). Also because of the colour palette, which isn't so unrelievedly grey/brown as F3's was.

Of course it's still early days yet, but my impressions of the game are almost wholly positive so far (lvl 10). Bugs seem to be pretty minor, and the devs are impressively active, and constantly improving things (it seems, judging from the history).

My only qualm is re. the grouping situation - it does seem to be more of a soloer's MMO.  The one bit of grouping I did so far was great fun, but there don't seem to be any calls going out for groups or anything.  Since PUG-ing in MMOs is my main love, this might turn me off the game eventually, but at the moment I'm having great fun wandering the wastes as a soloer anyway.

PvP I haven't tried yet.  I'm mostly a carebear, but I'm not averse to some team PvP now and then.  PvP seems to be pretty active (although I've read that due to some recent gameplay changes it's gone down in popularity).

Anyway, if you like post-apocalyptia, and are looking for a new MMO to get your teeth into, I'd highly recommend that anyone get the trial.  I'm totally hooked - subbed about 2 hours after I started playing the free trial.  ANd keep spreading the word.  This game deserves success.

come back when you are level 20 and bored

i looks nice at start but gets so boring later on ...

I tried FE and think it probably has the most potential of any MMO out there. The problem was, I just couldn't get past the clunky combat. If they overhauled the combat system, I'd be back in a heartbeat.

Or you can just stand in Los Alamos at lvl 50 and wonder what to do next? since there is nothing to do at high levels other then chip grinding. There used to be very active PVP few months back and even that has gone down considerably.

played the beta and it looked like a very good game once you get to know it.......just didnt have time to explore the crafting tough......how is the crafting in thats game.

And also the game looked very deserted when i played it......is it still like that cause thats the reasoni didnt sub for it......if no people would be found in a free beta then how would it populate with paying people?

Yeah It was nice for a couple of weeks or so but nothing really interesting in the end. Other then the setting it´s quite generic.

All statements I make is from my point of view unless stated otherwise.

Seems active to me, at least in Sector 1 there are usually about a dozen players in every town I've been to - enough for it not to feel "empty", but not so many that the sense of bleakness is spoiled by lots of people dashing about.

Population thins out a lot in S2 and even more so in S3. S1 is populated because of free trials.

The factions sound really cool. I was disappointed to learn they are merely a means to grind skills and action points. Seems like they had an opportunity to make a really unique faction-based PvP game, but decided FFA would be easier.

The crafting is much more fun than most games to me. I don't usual like to craft but did a lot here. That said, the economy wasnt real supportive of crafting, though they could have worked on that - i havent played in a few months.

Agree with the OP about it being overly solo friendly. I always think one of the keys to a good MMO is that it satisfies soloers and groupers well. They need to ramp up the PUGability a little and I'd be back probably (I don't have big complaints about FE - and never got bored -  it really just had a lot of competition).

Another thing I should say - particularly on these forums there are a lot of people hankering after sandbox games.  Well, I think this is potentially a good sandbox, and it's backed by some good PvE.  I think it has a hell of a lot of potential to be a real classic (like EVE), and I feel that so long as the devs keep working on it, it will constantly improve (again, the comparison is EVE, which has changed a lot since it started).

Come on folks, if you like the setting (post-apocalyptia isn't everyone's cup of tea, of course) support the type of MMO you're all hankering after!  Apart from EVE and Darkfall, which are probably both a bit too far towards the hardcore PvP side for most players, nobody else is doing anything even remotely like this at the moment, it deserves support.

I gather it's had an animation revamp since the early days? - I don't have much problem with the anims, and I'm usually one of those people who's quite finicky about that sort of thing.  Not AAA of course, but not so clunky that I'm distracted.

I dont know. I heard people complain about that at launch and they always looked smooth to me. Maybe not CO smooth, but as smooth as the average big budget MMO.

I love post-apocalyptic games / movies. Too bad my system is outdated and I can't run FallenEarth, by the time I got my new PC, I'll be playing the newer games anyway. So I'm afraid FE is not for me.

Also read they've added an itemshop to FE ? That's a total game-breaker for me.

i played the trial about an hour, find the graphs and gameplay overall feel is so shitty.

Of course there isn't. The only thing you can buy for cash is a non-combat pet with 4 additional storage slots. That doesn't make it an item shop, some people should stop exaggarating.

In the last state of the game (Jul I think) this was slated for some upcoming changes.  I noticed in some reviews that people were saying they could make more of the faction system.  It seems an obvious thing.

But that's what I mean, it's the sort of MMO where the developers do work with the players and gradually improve the game.  I fully expect that a couple of years down the line the faction system will be something special.

Btw for anyone interested, the faction system is pretty clever in lore terms - there's no sense of blackhats vs. whitehats; all the factions are various shades of grey shading into each other on a wheel, with factions on opposing sides of the wheel being mortal enemies.

Forgot to respond to this.  Put it this way, I'm normally not a crafter in MMOs, crafting usually feels like a tacked on timesink.  But in this game the crafting is totally integrated into the gameplay and the lore (i.e. it's post-apocalyptia, you have to scavenge and make stuff for yourself mostly).  It's still a timesink obviously, but because it's so well integrated, and so intricate, it feels natural and part of your waste-wandering persona.  It feels like what you'd be doing in that situation.

Also, this is the first game I've tried crafting in, in which I've been actually able to craft useful stuff as I level - twice I've crafted, without too much trouble, without any obscene grinding, decent upgraded weapons at my level, such that I felt a feeling of accomplishment and pride.

Im enjoying this game as well. The crafting is great. The missions (quests) don't feel like a grind. There's lots of variety to them and they stick with the lore quite well. It took a little bit to get my hands around the abilities and mutations. The community is very helpful. I havent run across anyone that gives me false information or snarky responses.

Gaming since Avalon Hill was making board games.

Played SWG, EVE, Fallen Earth, LOTRO, Rift, Vanguard, WoW, SWTOR, TSW, Tera
Tried Aoc, Aion, EQII, RoM, Vindictus, Darkfail, DDO, GW, PotBS

I did played this game during his CB phase, the main part was ok, char development was good, craft is a pain with the times, but at least it craft when you fight and when you log off, so have a huge list of crafts on work during game and before you log is necessary, even more if you use guns, but the main issue is too slow combat, by that time It was some lack of mobs strengh (some too powerfull some too weak), I don't know how things are now but also with the fallout MMo comming people would rather wait for that one

FOR HONOR, FOR FREEDOM.... and for some money.

Thnx for all the response on my questions all :)

It seems to me that the crafting is realy time-consuming if you realy want to get into it......i love that, didnt see it anywhere since Vanguard and UO tbh.

The combat isnt all that fancy me thinks (it wasnt in the beta anyways) but it didnt bother me that much.....it was stil fun.

Maybe i should give this one another try.......who knows :)

I agree more people should know about this game. I have been telling all my real life friends about how much I am enjoying this game so far and how much of a fresh breath of air it has been to me. It is the first mmo I have played in a long time that has not been completely dumbed downed. Having said that I am not a "hardcore mmo everything else especially WOW sucks cause its easy player" or anything like that, but I do enjoy how complex this game is. I feel rewarded in this game when I gain levels or skill up in crafting. I absolutley love the fact "through level 14 at least" how you can make all your gear, weapons extc.. and the fact that it actually takes a long time to make these things.(I know you can craft while offline trust me I do it and love this feature). This game makes me feel like an apocalypse really has happened and you are crafting gear and weapons to survive out the wild, not just powerleveling your crafting so you can make money off it. I also enjoy (even if you spec to get products from merchants cheaper) how expensive everything seems to be and how you actually have to work at obtaining things within the game. The Attribute system reminds of old games where you could make your character whatever you wanted to be and were not forced to a be certain class and have a certain skill set. Having said all this, the game is not for everyone but if you are like me and have been looking for something different for a long time you might want to check it out. (I have been looking for something better since DAOC and haven't found it yet thats why I still play it, I know this is a totally different kind of game but it is a very good one which I hope more people will play.)

Currently Playing- Fallen Earth, DAOC, Starcraft II
MMO's played- DAOC, WOW, Warhammer, FFXI
MMO's Tried- EQ, EQ2, EQOA, Vanguard, AOC, Tabula Rasa,SWG, Aion,Guild Wars,LOTRO,CO and some ftp mmos

@ how expensive everything seems to be.

I've actually failed to engage in PvP because we agreed that bullets were too expensive and it wasnt worth it.

lolz....now thats funny.....but they could fix that in a patch tough to make it a BIT affordable.
