Much like James Cameron. The only person to beat his sales on a film was, well James Cameron. With the foothold that Blizzard has on the mmo industry, much that Nintendo is handheld systems, Blizzard "is" the mmo industry.
So in truth it makes sense that the only mmo to beat WoW would be another mmo created and published by Blizzard.
Thats my opinion.

I highly doubt Blizzard would risk cannabalizing their precious. I believe only time itself can dethrone WOW. I also think that the slow inevitable decline will come some months after the Cataclysm expansion. It should be interesting to observe.

An mmo to reach the numbers of WoW could only come from Blizzard, that's a fact.
I think a starcraft mmo would be a comparable competitor without actually cannabalizing their own subscribers. I mean for 24.99 you can play Starcraft Online and WoW online at the same time? Shoot who wouldnt take it.
Starcraft is the near opposite of WoW. Its darker, serious, and the art is far more near realistic as a sci fi can be.
Think about it. They release warcraft a rts, and starcraft a rts.
Makes sense that they could release a starcraft esque mmo and do just fine.
Oh and I forgot to mention that battlenet is a multiverse type application that allows you to contact your friends no matter what game your playing.
I now playing SC2 enjoy chatting with my WoW friends without actually having to play their game.
GENIUS!
I disagree with the OP.
the reason nobody has been able to beat WoW, was simply, the developers of these games fail at knowing what it is that makes WoW so great.
I have said it time and time again on this forum.
Things like Harsh DP, dont bring in numbers,,,, It gets rid of them,,,,,.
DP doesnt need to be harsh for the gameplay to be fun and challenging.
WoW has great PvP gameplay as well. People love hiding behind that age old excuse on this forum that WoW's PvP isnt Balance. Well no MMO I know of is 100% Balanced. So I dont see the point of running away from a similar PvP system that WoW has.
At most, what the dried out PvP fans of WoW want is a Simulation of AV, but maybe even on a larger scale.
Go back to check out the old Warhammer hype post back in the hype phase. People would title Warhammer's concept, as "WORLD AV".
Blizzard made the mistake of destroying AV, and not replacing it well for Persistent enjoyment. Some other developer, if they have a brain, could capsize on this opportunity. Warhammer failed on this, because they were driven by too much WoW hatred ego forum fan cheerleaders.
PvE is also a important aspect of WoW's domain.
People on this forum ,seem to be so against Raiding gameplay and such, that they failed to realize that Raiding is big time enjoyment for the masses. Even the Casuals, which is why Blizzard changed their concepts in the first place, to benefit both the Hard Core and the Casual gamers.
Another thing I noticed about this genre of gaming developers, is that it seems only BLIZZARD's fans do not criticize them for COPYING/STEALING IDEAS. I see daily, flames on this forum dealing with WoW Clones, and mess like that. But this seems to never be the case for the Top Dog of the MMORPG genre, aka WoW. Blizzard can steal ideas, and the forum fans cheer them on. But if lets say, Warhammer's developers did the same thing, they would get the flame bat from the Forum frantics out there.
Philosophy of MMO Game Design
All this crap about blizzard is the only one that will beat WoW is just absurd. Like one other person said, time will wind up being the downfall of that game. They have all these subs but believe me plenty of those people are tired of the same game for all these years and they are bored and lookng for something better. ALot of WoW people are just waiting for the right one to come out. They don't give a damn if it is from blizzard or whoever.
"When it comes to GW2 any game is fair game"
But the wow people are used to the polish and quality of wow, and unless another game can beat Blizz in those departments, it is not going to "wow" the 11.5M wow players.
And the company best suited to do that .. Blizzard.
I think TOR has a shot but the next Blizz MMO will be the one to watch for.
Well said brotha.
I'm not talking about a game now , next month , or even next year. I am saying that a good well polished game that keeps players satisfied and enjoying the content, can get alot of WoW numbers. Maybe not 11.5 mill but say the get 7 mill and WoW numbers go down to 4 mill because people are tired of the game.
Game would have to have huge marketting to get the word out and then once they start getting their friends in , won't be too much longer before they get the entire guilds over.
Not sure if TOR would do it, it has gotten so much hate already. Which is part of the problem, but maybe a game in the near or distant future can get the job done. I am tired of living in the WoW age of gaming lets move on to something else.
"When it comes to GW2 any game is fair game"
Do you really think Blizzards's next MMO will be polished like WoW's current state?
The Stranger: It's what people know about themselves inside that makes 'em afraid.
Yea , I actually heard on the history channel that there is a mountain that will be taller than everest in the future. Not exaclty sure I remember which one they were talking about or what continent it was on, but that just goes to show your analogy stinks.
The geography of our planet is forever changing. Learn something please.

Is this other mountain going to rise up in a year and declare itself the winner......no....
and neither wil any supposed WoW killer, WoW is going to be at the top for years to come.

What exactly did you disagree with? That Blizzard will make the next MMO that beats WoW? The reason people jump all over other companies about being a WoW clone ... is because they don't want it to be a WoW clone. They want something different. People who actually play WoW could care less if they copy . .. because it IS WoW, and whatever makes it better is good. Most people playing WoW arent coming from another game because WoW is something different hence not much complaints from copying other companies.
I, for one, is tired of playing WoW. Everything gets repetitive and starting to feel like work. The fun factor had diminished. And with the information about changes in Cataclysm...for which my character (hunter) is going a major overhaul, is not acceptable. I don't think I accept the fact that I have mastered my class for all the years of playing only to have it relearned in the next expansion. I don't think so. My only regret is that I'm subbed until Sept, part of the 6-month subs.
And I'm wondering, if Blizzard is so great and might in MMO world, why merge with Activision?
Therefore I disagree with the OP, rather than Blizzard tops Blizzard....I think Blizzard will kill Blizzard, and it's showing.
Ready for GW2!!!
Im placing pebbles on the K2 every time no one is looking. One day! One day itll be higher then Mt Everest! You mark my word! One day! Muahahahahahahahaa!
Blizzard will kill Blizzard and it is showing? How so? They just relased SC2 to popular demand and most seem satisfied with that as well. Face it, Blizzard itself defiantely isn't tanking anytime soon.
Semantics.
"The reason people jump all over other companies about being a WoW clone...is because they don't want it to be a WoW clone."
"The reason people jump all over other companies about being a WoW clone...is because they do want it to be a WoW clone."
You see either way, people willl criticize other company either "not like WoW" or "it's like WoW". If it's not like WoW, people will give an excuse that they don't want to change. If it's like WoW, then why change at all.
Ready for GW2!!!
Not suckering me into this one, lol.
When you think of it, still amazing wow even made it past the first 3 months of release with how bad it launched. Its launch was worse then some of the newer mmos. Aoc even had a more stable launch then wow if you go back to the first month.
All the server downtime and crashes wow had I even wanted to up and quit, blizzard going into meltdown by rampaging subscribers lol
You have no idea what's going on outside your Blizzard bubble, do you? I'm telling you right now, someone in Activision/Blizzard is making stupid decision that will alienate their fan base. Using your example, SC2 has high demand, but the things that made it great (i.e. LAN, SDK, etc.) are all gone. Plus, you PAID for the game but you don't OWN the game. If you can accept that, then that's your choice. But if things continue at the this rate, you'll see what I mean.
Ready for GW2!!!
Can you build a better burger than McDonald's ..?
The answer is yes, almost anyone can. WoW is not the best, not even close, it is just the most marketed and most avaiable game to children... I don't know what games you've been playing, but WoW basically blows compared to more mature and older MMORPG's.
Your post is ironic though, because I certainly hope WoW2 grabs some 40 millions kids... so they stop ruining all the other games.

Blizzard vastly underestimated how popular WoW was going to be in the beginning, that's part of it. They sold out of all boxes at the beginning if I remember right, that never happens.
Everyone I know that plays WoW is in the 25+ range, most of them having families. Maybe I don't play with the 12 year olds so I don't see them. I played on Argent Dawn, which is probably one of the highest populations servers, and I played both Horde and Alliance, I only ever met 3 people who were teens.
This makes it real hard for me to go along with the "wow is a childrens game" way of thinking that you pose here.
I'm one of the many mmo players that have played literally every single mmo and I can't think of a single one that is your ideal Mature and Older mmorpgs. All mmos I have played have the same chat as every other mmo except with the added " we aren't playing wow so we are better".
In fact I find a lot of mmos other then WOW to be quite petty when it comes to the player base because of that supposed higher standard.
The Stranger: It's what people know about themselves inside that makes 'em afraid.
LAN is not SC2 but the SDK is and what do you mean you don't own the game? are you refering to the false information that you need to be online to play single player? well you don't need to be online to play single player. And go pick up a copy of SC2 you wont see any mention of Activision on the box, manual or ingame becuase Activision has zero say or input in the development of blizzard games (even blizzard devs have admitted this)... but we've been down this road a million times.
