CoH Going Rogue Expansion live... crickets chirp.

http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/patch_notes/issue_18_going_rogue_patch_not.html

I'm confused as to why this isn't like a front page news story here, or anywhere else for that matter.  It's practically as big of a release as was CoV in terms of new content and a changed game experience.

I'm not trying to be critical, just really confused.

All the servers were medium to full pop and Virtue was at limit when I logged in last night, so the playerbase has obviously noticed...

It was actually a "soft" launch yesterday for everyone that pre-purchased  the digital version of GR.

I was on Freedom & it was showing heavy load (3 red) at 10pm eastern - it will probably be picked up today by the media, since this is the actual launch day.

CoH: Mr E-Man, Energy Arc, IG-2112MD, Slayer Faith, Master TimeLord Mr E-Being
CoV: Mr E-Villain, Dark Willow, Cold Satisfaction, Mr E-Mech, Mr E-Lectric
    Freedom Server

I'm glad to hear that.  I prepurchased when it first became available for demons and dual pistols, and will be resubbing to try out GR in full when I get back from a concert on thursday.

Despite it having a softlaunch, it would be nice to see some coverage from mmo news outlets, since it's one of the most relevant MMOs currently.

Yup, We've got a Q&A going up about it today.

CoV had way, way, WAY more content than GR does.

That is awesome to hear! Good for them.

Looks like it might be fun, but I think its overpriced at 39.00, I will wait till it drops down to 19.00. If they had added a few 20+ zones I might have gone for it now.

You do realize that for $40 you get not just a brand new game's worth of content, but six years worth of it, plus the first 30 days of ingame time is included?

Don't want to take the leap? Feel free to try it out with the free trial. As long as you don't expect it to be an FPS, or are looking for a lot of PvP, you may just like it. I've been there for nearly six years now. I've tried most of the other MMOs, but this one keeps drawing me back...

It is not a brand new game's worth of content.  It is a new starting zone for levels 1-20 which is meaningless if you are level 50.

Six year's worth of content?  It takes what, a month or two to get to 50...and then nothing?

Yes, the xpac is $24 if you take into account the month you get - which is a rip-off for those that did the pre-purchase for $29.

    Think about it:

Those that did the pre-purchase -

    $29.99 for Going Rogue.

$6.99 for Going Rogue Complete Item Pack.

    $14.99 for monthly sub.

Plus $19.99 (or more for those that have had the game for any period of time - bought CoV separately, etc) for CoH/CoV.

    Total:  $71.97 or more...

For those that just buy the Complete... $39.99.

Yes, way to reward your loyal customers NCsoft... way to reward us...bastards.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

I hope it does well but for me despite numerous attempts the game just was missing that "it " factor.

  • MistmouseMistmouse Member Posts: 91

I  left the game a few months back So I have a good idea what I am missing.  Coh was my fall back game when I get bored with swords n wizards and even so I have almost a dozen 40s and countless 30's and  perhaps a 50 or two. I hit the 48 month badge back in May.

As I mentioned before I think 39.00 was to much for what they are offering  and a few years late. Will I play again? I am almost sure of it but I don't mind waiting for the price to drop down first

  • karat76karat76 Member UncommonPosts: 1,000

I don't think I ever made it to level 20. I tried the game many times but always find myself uninstalling before I hit level 20.

    Sure you can.

Typical pre-order/pre-purchase scenario...you get more or a bonus compared to the person that waits.

    So yeah.  Can blame them.

With the CoH pre-order, received beta access - comic - prestige power - printable map - and bonus non-in-game game related goodies.

CoV was along the same lines - poster - helmet - map - etc.

GR...you are left with an odd feeling that something is just not right each time you sit down.

Is not years of fun and enjoyment reward enough? What is it you want? Free game time?

If this was sarcasm - kudos!  It was definitely good for a laugh.

If this was serious - kudos!  It was definitely good for a laugh.

Seriously, it is pretty simple.  Consider somebody that was new to the game this year, that saw that an expansion was coming out for the game - that decided to subscribe say a month before the release - so they could get a feel for the game and be close to what would be additional content at the end of the current game...

They would pay $19.99 for the Architect (where they get a free $10 super booster) version and $29.99 for the GR pre.  Say their sub runs out the day of the GR launch, so they need to sub another month for $14.99.  So their cost to play would be $64.97...

Say somebody decided just to wait to see if they like CoX:GR and buy the GR:C version.  Their cost is $39.99.

The GR:C person would have to spend $9.99 to get the super booster; taking them to $49.98.

The pre-sale person would have to spend $6.99 to get the GR Item Pack and $9.99 for the two additional character slots, taking them to $81.95.

Why is the person that supported NCsoft by doing the pre-sale of GR paying $31.97 for the same content/items?

So you have the $39.99 Complete version.  That includes the $6.99 item pack.  So take that out, and you are at $33.  It includes a month of game time.  So take that out, and you are at $18.01.  It includes CoH/CoV, considering the most recent version is the Architect one that includes a super-booster - which GR:C does not come with - so drop that down to $10, and subtract that bringing you to $8.01.

So what do I want?  I want the pre-sale to have sold for $8.01, and thus - I want a $21.98 refund...

Late July 2010 - AE edition on Steam $20

The next week - GR expansion from the NC Soft website $30

GR Launch day - 30 day jet pack $5

Flying around as a 10 foot robot or a 5 foot voluptuous bikini-clad blonde - priceless!

I didn't get screwed over, because I saw it coming.

You can't bitch at them for something you just noticed in hindsight. That's foolish. Quit wha-festing and know better next time. Dollar spent, dollar earned, off it went, lesson learned. People pay a lot more than 18 bucks for an education.

Are you kidding?  Of course you can bitch at them.  It is not something noticed in hindsight.  It is a case of what they did.

Previous pre-sales from the company had added value - additional items, game time, etc, etc, etc.  This time around, you get less and end up paying almost double what somebody new to the game would pay as your reward.

Get off the NCsoft vibrating fanboi pole already...

How about this then as an option then...

For those that did the pre-sales, for an additional $10 they get the additional items that come with the Complete edition?

The two additional character slots that cost $9.99, the additional month of service which costs $14.99, and the additional item pack which costs $6.99 - the additional $31.97 of stuff that people got for an additional $10 by not supporting NCsoft with the pre-sale...eh?

That sounds reasonable. Would you settle for two months of free game time?

It's true they screwed up the pricing and marketing of Going Rogue. Bad/nonexistent marketing is unfortunately one of the hallmarks of the game, and one of the reasons it's niche rather than as big as it could be.

Compare Going Rogue's $40 box with City of Villains' $50 box. The 1-40 content that launched with CoV alone dwarfs Going Rogue's content. And it also had tons of costume pieces, several Archetypes, several zones, several new powersets...you see my point.

CoH is a great game, I'd recommend it to anyone, but Going Rogue could have been handled much better in the pricing/marketing department, if not in the content department.

Well, you are sort of right, it isn't a 'whole games' worth of stuff, it is lvl 1 thru 20 content. But it added two new factions to the game which bleed over to CoV and CoH and you will now see Villain archetypes as Heroes and vice versa in CoV/CoH post lvl 20.

Two more factions and a lot of new archetypes makes a big impact on the lvl 50s game experience, not to mention it proves that their scope went beyond the wall of Pratorea.

(-14.99 for free month that came with AE)

Say somebody decided just to wait to see if they like CoX:GR and buy the GR:C version.  Their cost is $39.99.

The GR:C person would have to spend $9.99 to get the super booster; taking them to $49.98.

The pre-sale person would have to spend $6.99 to get the GR Item Pack and $9.99 for the two additional character slots, taking them to $81.95.

Of course, you failed to mention that the Architect Edition came with a 30-day sub free14.99 , plus the free booster at 9.99, that makes Arch Ed $4.99.

And while the Going Rogue Pre-Purchasers did not get the 30-day sub or the booster pact, they did get to play with Dual Pistols and Demon Summoning early.

I'm so disappointed with NCsoft and the quality of the game that not only did I Pre-Purchase Going Rogue, I also box a boxed version, and the Booster Pack. Matter of fact I'm so disgusted that after my original purchase of the Good vs Evil Edition, I went out and found the boxed version of the CoH Collector's DVD Ed, a CoV Pre-Order Ed, CoV Collector's DVD Ed, CoV Ed, and Architect Ed, Booster Packs, I, II, III, IV, V and the Wedding Pack. I'm so ticked off, I'm going to sub for an entire year, that's 11.99/mo in case you didn't know.
