Warhammer the tabletop game lets you fight anyone with a cohesive army and all races are available.
Warhammer the game is very restrictive in who you can fight and the "Armys" the main draw to War fans are not there. And not all races are represented. Also the RvR concept while close to lore is once again restrictive.

Well, what I personally didn't like about it was it's blatant theme-parkery. And what I mean by that is when I logged in, it felt like a chaotic orgy of repititious and boring goings on that never really hooked my attention, made me feel unique, or even like I accomplished something.
Other than that, the creatures and NPCs were dull and bland, the quest felt copy-pasted, and every one of those special event doohickies just reloaded every five minutes, taking me completely out of the experience, and making everything seem like it was on a perpetual loop.
PvP was also boring.
Why were my expectations so high? Well, keeping an eye on this game for months, like plenty of other folks did, and hearing the devs talk about how revolutionary and special it was going to be, and then being completely devasted after planning... Feels bad, man.
Yea although i could stand my favourate race not initially being represented [i want to be a Plaguebearer as tank] i was willing to wait 6 months before trying to get past the initial buggs and to see the direction this game was going with.
A big disapointment overall.

If you go out and promise the most awesome PvP ever created from the creators of DaoC, calling it the Heavy metal rock of PvP games and then deliver a very small version of WoW.... People tend to get disappointed.

It was designed to resemble wow, lore was thrown down the drain to better resemble wow, and pretty much it has been developed with the "wow killer" goal in mind.
If they sticked with Warhammer lore and an original (or perhaps DAOC-like) gameplay, it'd fare much better.
WAR ultimately failed because of a terrible launch. The game was barely playable, would crash frequently (possibly due to Vistaids) and to top it off, the install disc didn't even create a proper icon to boot the game. I recall having to dig through windows files just to find the game's patcher.
The RvR was fun, but completely dependant on a community that didn't stay. Entire race starting areas became completely barren. They built the game around the player base, but the players weren't there.
The sad part is, in spite of the bugs, the game was actually -really- fun. The quests were written to make you feel like a part of the game, giving a purpose to the whole "Go kill 5 sewer rats" bit that seems pointless in every other MMO.
Lack of new content imho. An MMORPG needs, for me, to evolve somehow, and especially become larger as time progresses. Adding new zones, questhubs, maybe even classes or races. It doesn't matter that much in what frequency these content updates are implemented. The important thing is that you know something will come and you can read stuff about it and be looking forward to it.
With WAR? 99% of all patches are about modifying slightly what is already there. That is not enough for me. If there'd be constantly news about new zones added or whatever, I'd have returned since a long time to check the new stuff out. But like this? Some textures changed here, some bugfixes there, pfff...

Ummmmm you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. The only people that badmouth WAR are people that don't play it and wow fanboys who weren't even born when warhammer came out. The game is not a failure. The pvp is the best of the genre. The community is awsome. The battles are epic. And there is a large player base. Don't let the trolling anti-mmo/anti-war KIDS discourage you. There's nothing wrong with war. They didn't lie about anything at launch. I don't know where they get these ideas. Ignorance maybe? The game was not unplayable at launch. I was there. A fortress siege crash is not a failure...
well there adding the skaven as a third faction, that should be interesting. but should of had three factions from the start as well as make sure the game was more stable and made the art work a little further from wow, but as far as I am concerned WoW kind of copied warhammers look of orcs.

So... over a milion people bought it... +80-85% left it pretty much the first three months, and now it is stumbling forward on life support, because it is the BEST OF THE GENRE!!!!! I will say the group PvP is pretty awesome. You can have big groups of people, and everyone can feel useful. Running around with a small group and avoiding the zerg while still picking off small pockets is great.
Some of the big problems when I first quit so long ago included;
certain classes were just better then so many others. Granted, right now, there are a few alpha classes. But both sides have these alpha classes. There are few spell/damage differences, but not too big.
Crashing at release was bad. There has been a huge improvement, but lately, crashing has become a LOT more commonplace. They just released a new patch (and a great one, talk about that in a second), that any "screen shake" animation causes the graphics to reload. And certain classes can cause that to happen every 10 seconds or so.
The need to just play for Renown to get gear/wards/etc. When a game is focused on only getting to end level to be able to compete, it causes people to "grind" through as much and as hard as they can. That leaves casual players feeling very left behind. Also, the side with a lot more people generally wins, rolls the other side, and causes more people to not PvP in the RvR lakes.
With the new patch, Against All Odds, whenever your side is outnumbered, you gain this buff. It increases the amount or renown/influence you get when fighting. Today was the first real day since the servers were a little crazy yesterday on patch day. I haven't seen this many people fighting at the same time in any game. It was awesome. Sure, we were outnumbered, but it didn't matter. Instead of destro giving up because order took a keep, or won a fight, we rolled back in. It was great.
Is everyone going to enjoy this game? Hell no. But if you can get past people that already hate it without trying it, don't come solo. You can play the trial free to 10 forever. But I recommend bringing friends. This is a GROUP game. If you come into this game rolling a Melee dps, or Tank, and think you are going to kill everyone and 3 people at the same time, You won't. I think that is another thing people dislike. Many play solo, and they can't kill anyone 100% of the time.
There is about 20 of us who just came back this past month. And we are loving it. Playing solo, I think this game just is not fun.

Playing completely solo, perhaps, but I have never joined a guild and so far this is one of the few games where I can completely enjoy myself without being in a guild.
One can show up and be part of a fight or queue up for a scenario and instantly be part of it all.
I've had some great pvp experiences in Warhammer. Love my sword master.

Playing for one year now but i am not oblivious to reality. Game has lost a large chunk of its player base. So to say 'every game loses players after the first few months' is correct but not at this scale and volume. I don't know any other MMO which fell so hard going to mere handfull of servers from 40+. The game is managed by a skeleton crew is also true, and for how long they can continue to support WAR only future will tell. Who know maybe they turn to F2P model if things get any worse then this.

If there ever was a time for a gif with the Iraq press secretary... this would be it. This is a thread where people tried to talk about what went wrong with one of the biggest IP:s in the world. To drop their thoughts and ideas why it did not work a game that millions of people wanted, then when it came did not want to play. It is a very logical and good question, perfect for a bit of discussion. Your answer to that: Because EVERYONE are trolls! They refuse to play the game because they are trolls!! And you know quality, its the rest of the WORLD that have no clue what quality is.
I know mmorpg.com never ban a person that support a game, no matter how unconstructive and rude he is. But you really need a few days on the cooling bench. You are the only troll in the thread.

Sorry buddy i am not the one ignorant here. You keep saying population has doubled yet fail to acknowledge the sharp decilne in player base since the day of release. I am from PRAAG server and transferred to Badlands. Thats the most active server right now for US. I don't know how anyone can find it encouraging that the game which launched with over 40 servers now has Badlands the most active server? i don't know what is so impressive about it.
Even your 'every MMO loses players after few months' theory didn't apply here.

I think there is some truth to that.
The game did have issues when it started but it did seem that the players who joined were huge warhammer fans or, as you say, a group of wow players looking for something new.
It seems that there is a large number of wow players who join a game, become dissapointed because the game doesn't play like wow, and then they go back to wow.
In some ways it makes a lot of sense.
There are a lot of players who have played wow but want something new. They try a new game but see that it doesn't have everything that wow has. Part of that is because at launch it would be practically impossible to equal what wow has added over the years. Many game companies can't seem to (or aren't willing to) devote the resources to truly compete.
And of course, the most obvious, not every game is trying to "truly" be a wow clone. WoW players become dissapointed that they arent' essentially getting heir wow experience in another game and leave.

Actually, that assessment was pretty much bang on.
The first month was a complete disaster, I spent as much time filling out bug reports as I did playing the game. From random crashes, to combat animations repeating themselves, to the AH being full of placeholder items. Sure it was playable, but only if you closed your eyes and ignored everything happening around you. It was a complete failure, and you're about the only person who denies it.
Add to this a host of other gameplay issues, along with the complete lack of balance that should have existed between classes, and you were left with a game that wasn't worth most people's time and effort.
Now much of these problems can be solved with time, but those first few weeks left a lasting impression on people. I certainly wouldn't go back. Almost everything about the gameplay seemed backwards and clunky, the AH was a nightmare to navigate with a vast unsorted list of identical items socketted slightly differently interspersed with non-existant items. Keep your fanboy comments to yourself, most of us expect quality when we fork out a monthly subscription, only a select few will put up with such a colossal failure long enough to see it fixed.
What doesn't help it's cause much is that practically every good idea in the game has since been poached and redone in a much better way during it's time in the pits of obscurity.

Warhammer the game is very restrictive in who you can fight and the "Armys" the main draw to War fans are not there. And not all races are represented. Also the RvR concept while close to lore is once again restrictive.

To put it simply the game is not warhammer.

"This is not a game to be tossed aside lightly.

It was designed to resemble wow, lore was thrown down the drain to better resemble wow, and pretty much it has been developed with the "wow killer" goal in mind.
If they sticked with Warhammer lore and an original (or perhaps DAOC-like) gameplay, it'd fare much better.
war failed because it depends on its community to make the pvp fun, and its community is a bunch of jackasses sadly.
Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
And made it a little more bloddy.
So... over a milion people bought it... +80-85% left it pretty much the first three months, and now it is stumbling forward on life support, because it is the BEST OF THE GENRE!!!!! Battles are EPIC!!!!! And the only reason that you are your friends see it and the other 999.000 don't is... because they are "insert childish insult" and trolls?! Everyone?!!
Yeah.... Reality, try it out for once.. just once. You might... No, you wont like it, continue in fairy fluff fluff land. You fit right in.

LoL where are you getting this information from? Every game loses players after the first few months. You have no proof. Log on right now to badlands or gorfang. You have no idea what you are talking about.
Pleass tell me what game started with over 40 servers and was reduced two mere two in EU and 4 in US? please go ahead us and enlighten us.

I will say the group PvP is pretty awesome. You can have big groups of people, and everyone can feel useful. Running around with a small group and avoiding the zerg while still picking off small pockets is great.
Some of the big problems when I first quit so long ago included;
certain classes were just better then so many others.
It's called an intelligent use of resources. I never said the population was massive but the population on the active servers are just what is needed to make the game fun. Maybe you should try to actually play the game....
When I have more time I will probably sub again.

I don't know what server you're playing on but ever since the endless trial the population has almost doubled. A million people joined at first because #1 they were REAL warhammer fans or #2 they were wow/whatever fans that thought it was some new wow/whatever. Ignorance is not bliss...
You obviously have no idea how to comprehend what you read. I mentioned trolls once. I told you to learn wtf you're talking about before you talk. I even told you where to look yet you come up with insane crap like that. Sounds to me like your the troll propaganda zombie.
