I want to believe in this game!!!!

I really hope this game will be a hit. There are only  two games right now  that I´m looking forward: this one and GW2.

But I am also afraid that with so many competitors (wow-cata, swotr, tera, gw2...) the game wont have a strong population.

What do you think?

Release date is next year, should this game have been release (if possible ofc) much earlier?

Honestly the best game will win.  Competition-wise.. the stuff you mentioned...

wow-cata - wow people will play wow, there is no wow killer.  the only game really aiming specifically at wow people is swtor and it's unlikely to put a big dent in em.

swtor - won't be out until like a year after rift if current timelines remain.

tera - tera is an asian manual-aiming game.  there are tons of people that enjoy asian games and that enjoy manual aiming, but these generally are the people playing aion and ffxi atm who probably wouldn't want a non-asian game like Rift anyway.  so again, different demographic.

gw2 - it's an unknown at this point.  it's trying really hard to position itself as a full-scale MMORPG and 100% free to play.  unless there is some huge secret to building & developing the same quality game for millions less than everyone less, this game will be missing SOMETHING over sub-based games.  but yes, GW2 atm looks like the biggest competitor to RIft.

also, the title of your post made me immediately think of:

My main worry about Rift has been and still is the fact that it seems to be playing the whole thing VERY safe and traditional. In my opinion, that won't cut today when your game is based around offering something that's already on the market (and probably done better) + that one gimmick that you hope will propel the whole thing. It just doesn't work these days.

Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.

Well, as much as I'd like a "new and amazingly innovative MMO", staying safe and not having anything new worked very well for EQ2, WoW and LoTRO.   I hate that developers have pretty much given up on innovation, but it's hard to fault them given the market results.

SPOT ON!  I've played so many damn MMO's.  There is just no reason to list em anymore.  There is so much more this genre could be doing. I don't see this game really doing that much more then what I've all rdy seen.

That being said. I'm still keeping my eye on it. Being half the games are just clones of each other. As WoW all rdy showed.  A really good clone can still be lots of fun.

On that note. I feel Tera and GW2 offer more of what I'm looking for. Pushing the genre even if its just a little. Yet they still might fail hard. Sadly I think playing it safe and keeping in the realm of "clone" or just the norm. Will prob get a lot of players. People like playing what they all rdy know and understand.

I think you would be better off not hyping yourself up and just taking the game for what it is at launch and then deciding if it is something that is worth playing.

Too many players are hyping themselves out of perfectly good games because they are looking for something "perfect".

People do this in life as well and they spend their lives searching for a holy grail that never arrives.
