Is this game any better?

RenoakuRenoaku Member EpicPosts: 3,157

Last time I tried City OF Heroes was back in 2008/2009, and the graphics sucked big times at max on everything, the character models/Skins just did not look real enough to me at all.

Now one of my friends is telling me that the game has changed since the new Expansion, that the graphics are a lot better, stuff looks more real, and character skins are a hell of a lot better.

Has this game really improved or anything?

Apparently I17 introduced "ultra mode" for graphics. I started playing last month so I can't compare 2008. Like I've been telling everybody else just take a fly through praetoria with graphics maxed and see for yourself. Make sure your rig can handle it.

Skin textures in particular are relatively unchanged but ultra-mode really does make a difference otherwise.

You may find the character models and textures lacking detail still.  The environment looks great with reflections added.  I don't have a graphics card capable of running things at maximum settings (GTX 260) but the game still looks nicer than I last played it a year ago.

Reflections, shadows, water... kind of sums it up.

Character models - pieces still do not mesh correctly, the same color on different pieces still do not match at times, and you are still limited to two colors on pieces where it is evident that some of them need more than two colors not to look silly.

The gf's machine cannot run max settings and some areas in Praetoria are blinding eyesores with washing out and bleed in comparison to how they look on my machine.  She has a HD4550 (pesky low-profile and PSU issues) and I have a HD4670 (pesky wallet issues).

The thing I like the most about the graphics update:  no longer being punished for having an ATI card instead of a nVidia card.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

I don't know why people think this update to the graphics makes things look different (as in updated).  It's the same ole' textures they've always used only lit using a different light engine.  Just like a white piece of paper looks different in lamp light as opposed to sun light, it's still the same ole' piece of white paper.

None of the models/textures/sounds have changed.  Nothing.  It's all exactly the same as it's always been.  If you are expecting a mind blowing experience compared to a previous time you have played you won't be experiencing it.  Is it worth the money to upgrade a computer and cripple your framerate to have soft shadows beyond 200 meters?  Or to have ambient occlusion that makes almost no difference?  No.

I'm ready for COH2.  Let the old game/systems/broken economy die.

I was dissapointed when i saw the screenshots of the "new" grafics as i couldent find anything diffrent. I was hoping they would totally remake the grafics or atlest so much you would be impressed.

There was never a claim to updating models or textures -- the graphics update provides more dimension to the rendering, and that does translate clearly in-game as an improvement, whether or not you in particular can appreciate it.  And considering ultramode is optional, there's no need to upgrade or "cripple" your machine as you claim.

There was a point you were enjoying the game per your own posts about a year ago.  So what's changed?  Well, the've only added improvements and you've had time to play through everything.  Well then, if you're tired of the game after playing it, a 6 year old game that is, then maybe it's time to move on but the incessant ripping of the game doesn't make much sense.  If you're done with this toy, then go find a new one.  Clamoring for stuff to end because you're tired of it comes across as selfish and given there was a time you enjoyed the game and but can't now just shows you lack objectivity.

*shrug*   Somes of us still enjoy it and some new people are just discovering it and enjoying it.  Best of luck in your search for something new to have fun with.
