Apart from that I agree with the restrictions as being a bad idea. And I don't get how you come from EQ and complain about the graphics. And how after you've seen the screenshots and dislike it still try EQ2X.

Everquest 2 is a little harder then wow... You can't do bg's and get a full set of gear in one week...You have to work a little for it. I actually hate the new Ui and i don't like that they added new servers for the F2p.... I  would of rather they used the p2p servers to get us mroe on the normal servers :) But with every F2p game there are always restrictions... That's why i don't like f2p games or servers...

I played EQ2 from launch until sometime in 2008. I was kind of excited about EQ2x as I've resubbed to the real servers a number of times since then and never got my monies worth. The OP got further than I did and I'm used to the gfx. Extended blows, there are far too many restrictions for noobs to have fun ingame imo. f2p is supposed to work by getting you hooked enough to want to cough up the odd microtransaction. SOE are trying to bend your arm from the get-go and it's not enjoyable.

Also the new spell anims suck horribly, but thats another topic.

This is what I was I was going to post, but now I will just quote it and think of something else to post. I find it hard to believe someone played EQ for 6 years and didn't know to /bug the bugs.

Are they taking /feedback? They may yet adjust their plans if people whine directly to them enough.

I played it for a little bit, and my feeling is that it just makes me want to go pay for a real subscription to the REAL game because the restrictions are not cool.

The problem is that you only get one chance to make a first impression.

Sadly, this is a lesson most mmo companies have not learned yet.

as a EQ2 p2p player, this review is on spot.

i dont know if its just me but i SWEAR the free version has nerfed graphics...am i wrong???

You are better off playing DDO,LOTRO:F2P(beta) or AoC on tortage than this. This isn't a restricted F2P game, its a nerfed trial at most.

  • someforumguysomeforumguy Member RarePosts: 4,088

I wonder if the OP knows how to deal with inventory overflow, which shows in character screen.

But I agree on some things:

    - Like how Bronze is almost unplayable with the small inventory and 2 (I think?) bankslots you have.

    - I also agree on the bad world design. Mobs do seem to be placed in a very orderly way. Its less obvious in the later expansions, but very obvious in the old areas.

    - The graphics quality, well..the game is old. But yeah, the client still hogs resources like there is no tomorrow without backing it up with looks. A little like the Vanguard client. Both have the problem that they can give low performance even on the newest of hardware.

There is one awesome feature in EQ2 that should be standard in EVERY lvlbased MMO. Mentoring. The reason that I normally dont like lvlbased MMO's, is because most of the time I cant group with my friends because of lvl difference. In EQ2 thats never a problem because you can mentor other players. They even turned that into a positive thing by giving bonusses to the groupmembers. Any new lvlbased MMO should include this. No excuses anymore!

Ive noticed only that you start with lower settings then back when I still played EQ2.

They did change one thing though. The spells now show less effects at low spell lvl and more on higher spell lvl. If you know how it looked before, this is maybe one difference you noticed.

Its possible that people wont like LOTRO F2P because you have to unlock quests in their shop. While I think in EQ2 that Bronze is made almost unplayable (lack of inv space and no 1-9 chat channel), Silver is playable and still a very cheap option (one time 10$ fee to unlock). Comparing it to a trial makes no sense because of its limited duration :/

Sadly playing EQ2X with the classes/races-combos  i liked would force me to pay a sub and pay aditional fees to get the races. This was probably the biggest let down for me with the new payment model. I really do not understand why they didn't make classes buyable. Guess there will also be a huge imbalance in the numbers of players of each class in this game.

We aren't going to be allowing RMT in any way, shape or form on the non-exchange enabled EQ II servers. Period. End of statement.

The restrictions suck yes. but dont forget guys it is still in "beta".

Think of it this way, and actually, I'm hoping a lot of MMO's pick up this because, if you pay monthly and have money problems or just dont play enough right now. YOU CAN STILL LOG IN. that is awesome! If I could still log into my old Asheron's Call account, I totaly would and most likely would have payed for it off and on instead of abadoneing it entirely.

You can't unless you play one of the free classes. Although I wonder what happens to your character if your inventory is over the f2p-limit or you have parked him/her in a zone a f2p can't access.

Needless to say that your precious character won't be able to use his/her gear nor high-level spells either.

so you have your char you use when your account is down. everyone has alts. My bigger point thow was checking in on guild, friends, current events..."should I pay for another month?"

I very much enjoyed the EQ2X over this past weekend. I have been playing EQ2 on and off since launch around 2004. One of the biggest problems has been the diminishing server population  - it feels like a ghost-town sometimes. And that's particularly bad with a game that's so group-centric.

Along came EQ2X - it felt like 2004 all over again! Lots of people to play/group with!!! Unfortunately, the only "big" drawback that I see is that I kinda missed the fine print about the broker with EQ2X - essentially, unless you pay the $14.99, it doesn't exist (for purchasing). If you are reading this, SOE, PLLLLLEEEEAAAASSSSEEEE (yes, I'm begging!!!!) - give us a limited ability in Silver level upon release (perhaps only a certain number of transactions/day) to both buy and sell on the broker!!! I can accept the gimped bag slots, races, gold maximums, etc., but there is no real difference between this and the full station access (except more players in EQ2X!!!!) that make it worth paying the same amount for Gold level access. It would make this playing option, for the most part, "perfect!"

If that is the case then they are going to fail. As soon as people see how little they actually give you for free, how blatantly they restrict the F2P players besically hamstringing anything like halfway serious play, and things like that damned nag screen that pops up in the middle of your screen often enough to be just annoying reminding you to upgrade, noone will bother using this game as anything more than a free time waster... if that. Yes it has the potential to be fun, yes it could be used to entice people to actually become subscribers, but not until they put less restrictions on the F2P accounts and allow for more piecemeal upgrades to be purchased seperately. Hell if I am reading this right, you can only play the non-subscriber account on the one server. From what I am hearing they are unlikely to make any concessions such as the ones I mentioned, so I really can't see this little experiment doing them much good if any at all with regard to attracting more paying subscribers. I might play a good game that is F2P/Itemshop like DDO and LOTRO, but I will never be enticed to subscribe $15 per month to play a game with this model...

I guess I should have said also that I have been playing and mostly greatly enjoying the EQ2 Extended game, and I would probably play it at least casually if there weren't so many restrictions. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth, especially with glaring examples of how to do this revenue model correctly staring us all in the face...

How many times have I posted in these threads TELLING people what a shitty deal EQ2X would be??

    No one listens.

The only way to see what EQ2 is like....is to play EQ2.   Sadly, EQ2X is NOT EQ2.  AND....it shouldn't be any kind of reflection on the experience of PLAYING EQ2 because, as I played during the subscriber beta time of EQ2X, I can tell you....they are not at ALL alike.

EQ2X is a NOT FREE free to play game made with the INTENTION by SoE of making extra money. Period.  It's CRAP.

If you're interested in EQ2, for godssake fork out the 14.95 to BUY THE GAME.  If it's a NEW account, that is ALL IT WILL COST YOU to play the game for a MONTH.  Then, and ONLY THEN, will you know if you like EQ2.

    Again...I repeat:  EQ2X is NOT EQ2.

    Oh, and TO THE OP:

The BUG you ran into isn't a bug.  You're LIMITED on the amount of loot and gold you can acquire in the "free" to play version. So perhaps you hit your limit.  Pretty shitty huh?  EQ2X is a steaming pile of dog crap.

I love EQ2.  I hate SoE for being such morons with this EQ2X "free" bullshit.

Actually....that's what I thought too at first.  You have to change everything BACK to the way you had it set before. The level your gfx run on, the UI, etc.  It can all be changed BACK to the way you had it before, it's just a pain in the ass.

From reading here you would think EQ2 isnt really free to play. Shocking isnt it?  Anyone expecting to play a quality F2P game for free is dreaming.  As was stated above. Fork over the $15 a month and enjoy the game as it was designed to be played.

WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.

Not the spell or combat animations though.

My 2 mains are a conjy and a troub, and both got their animations utterly gutted by SOE.

You're right ....EQ2 ISN'T free to play and SoE always SAID it never WOULD be.

EQ2X is free to play. They are NOT the same no matter HOW MUCH anyone would try to say they are.  I'm not talking out my ass here.  I've played EQ2 for 5 years and I played in the subscriber beta for EQ2X.  NOT THE SAME GAME.  PERIOD.

You said it exactly right.  If you want to try EQ2, you're going to have to pay the 15 bucks to try it.  That's just the way it is.  UNLESS, of course, SoE pulls some other crap outta their sleeve.  As much as I hate that damn company for some of the stupid shit they do....I, unfortunately, love EQ2. But that's just me. :P

Oh well....wow.  I totally love the new animations, BECAUSE....the animations are now ALL different.  People used to complain that all spell casting looked the same.  It doesn't now.

AND....the higher level the spell, i.e. Expert, Master, etc.....the COOLER the animations look.  So if you're looking at weak low level spells now....they look weaker than they used to.  But the Master spells look AMAZING and the Expert ones look pretty awesome too.  I LIKE THAT, considering how much it costs to have those high end spells made, by god, it's about damn TIME they look like what they cost!  lol

Ice Comet used to look like a white ball....big damn deal.  NOW...my master Ice Comet is like a SHOWER of HUGE balls and it even snows for a bit afterwards!  I LOVE IT! They shake the ground and SOUND like the ground is getting pummeled by comets. BIG improvement, imo.
