You may be able to destroy planets, but you can never destroy what I am, friend. I am the hope of the universe, I am the answer to all living things that cry out for peace. I am the protector of the innocent, I am the light in the darkness, I am truth. ALLY TO GOOD, NIGHTMARE TO YOU

Most probably within the next week or two, but it is 'invitation only', so unless you won a key through one of the recent contests held by some of the FFXIV fansites then you most probably won't be getting a chance to play.
that sucks if you need to get a key to play open beta then but if they didnt use beta keys then they can test the stress on there servers when alot of people are gonna play it

Ummm.....
That is not an open beta then!
If the FFXIV team actually considers that open beta, they're brain damaged!
I agree - where did you hear this? Because that would not be an open beta for obvious reasons lol.
Official twiiter Aug. 11th.
"The application period for the upcoming open beta on Windows® is also scheduled to commence in the near future."
"Tester selection will continue past the application deadline, and successful applicants will be contacted as selections are made."
"If you have yet to register your application, please do so as soon as possible."
"The beta tester application period for FINAL FANTASY XIV will end at 01:00 A.M. (PDT) on Monday, August 16, 2010."
Agreed. Open Beta does not neccessarily means free-for-all access.
This game is getting slammed enough around the forums by the current testers and will take even more of a beating once the contest winners gain access. It would be marketing suicide to allow the unwashed masses to descend upon the game in its current unfinished state.
I know there's no law in the Constitution or anything stating that an Open Beta doesn't need to actually be "open", and I don't doubt that it's never been the case before. However, I can't think of one Open Beta that wasn't, well... open to all. Which other AAA title has had a limited open beta in the past? Now I'm intrigued. I've been a part of every major MMO's beta so far and I just can't think of one that didn't go from a closed beta to an open beta that was open to all. If it didn't go open to all it was still considered closed.
Just seems like a contradiction of terms or something to say something is open when it's actually closed besides to a select few.
I believe it will be during the last 2-3 weeks. Most believe release is sep 30 ,so i would start looking for open beta around sep 1+,most likely from 15th >29th.
What is really odd is this projected 30th release,i hope Square doesn't try to pull a fast one and charge people for a month sub on the 30th ,then again come the 1st of October. That was the scam they were using in FFXI at one time but i think it has been straightened out after many complaints but you never know,if they were crooked enough to scam us once then they just can't be trusted.

Lineage II, Warhammer Online, Global Agenda, Star Trek Online, Command & Conquer 4, StarCraft II....
For some developers (and more as time goes on, it seems), 'open beta' is so dubbed because the NDA is lifted, not because it is a free-for-all demo.
It has actually been some time since I've seen the term used in the latter manner. Not since Age of Conan, I think. Maybe Champions Online. Not entirely sure.
As has been stated Open Beta does not mean Open to All or to Anyone that is interested. The purpose of Beta testing is not only to test content and fix bugs but to try out various ideas and see how they scale and implement. There is no point in allowing a large number of people on to a limited resource server who won't be contributing to the improvement of the game and sorry but based on my experience a lot of Beta testers are not especially helpful to the process.
Square Enix doesn't gain anything by running a free-for-all open beta. Server load has been tested multiple time with each new inlfux of testers, new testers can't submit bug reports or feedback on the beta forums and given the amount of negativity on some gaming forums (and the beta forums) that currently surrounds many of the game's design decisions it would most probably be unwise to just open the floodgates so to speak.
At this point in time I think that the only people that are still 'super' optimistic about the game are those that haven't played it yet.
Actually that is EXACTLY what all devs do is overload their servers, that is how they test them, unless you are Aion and don't take any pre emptive action before the millions try to login and can't.
I will go on a limb and state that players will not be waiting for que ues come release date, everyone will be able to login.I hope Square lives up to their impeccable record and does not release with any bugs, exploits [probably] but bugs no.

+1 to this. Boy, does this game need a lot of work.
Its frustrating not being able to submit bugs or leave feedback on the message boards as it is, so i don't see what letting a large influx of new players into the game would achieve, other than to stress the servers perhaps.
But when OB does start, more than likely it'll be a case of first come, first served.
Ah, I missed that - my understanding was that anyone who had signed up for closed beta by a certain date would be given access to open beta - but I guess that makes more sense. Should come up with new terms, like narrow and wide beta .
