It's about as far away from polished as i'd expect a game to be, this close from release.

SE, with their close mindedness, have failed to build their game with the core basics i come to expect in a next gen MMO. The devs seem to have been locked in a room for the past 5 years while making this game and are completely oblivious to how the genre has evolved. All one needs to do is read some of their devs interviews to know they don't get it or are too stubborn to accept progress.

I do commend them for doing their own thing and i think more companies should follow suit. But in order to do so, the core of a game needs to be build on stable, fully fuctioning, and fluid mechanics. Once the basics are done, then you can add your own flair and vision to take things to the next level. How SE managed to create a UI that somehow manages to be worse than FFXI is mind boggling. How they also managed to make the same clunky and not fluid combat mechanics as a game 8 years old is also disturbing.

I'll state that unlike a lot of people, i actually like the combat system in XIV. It's the implementation that is horrible. Things take way too long from the point when i make up my mind how to act, to the actual action itself. This isn't a speed issue, it's poor mechanics that makes thing like actually getting out of the way of mobs abilities almost impossible. I'm not sure if these things can or ever will be fixed because they seem to be what the game was built on. I'm disappointed, i expected more. If you're somehow enjoying the beta, then more power to you.

Game is playing flawless for me.  Max settings and not a single hitch or frame drop below 28 in town.  Also running 16 aa.

I don't see how so many are NOT worried at this point. The game is due to release in a month, and we've barely seen any of the content. I know they are supposed to add a huge content update for open beta (beginning of september), but if that is true that's an awful lot of content to push into a last minute beta. Quests / content are always riddled with bugs and it usually takes a while to fix them. It's an awful lot of work to leave for the last minute.

Also, I don't think people would be that much ahead w/ the quests implemented in the closed beta stage. For one, characters are getting whiped, there's only 1 town to play in, and only a few areas to adventure into. That's a fairly small fraction of the game to be concerned with. Plus players have already found ways to maximize the game. Maybe they've been testing a lot of these things internally for a long time, but I still think there's good reason to be worried atm. I hope I'm wrong and they launch their miracle update for open beta; but in my experience with MMOs, miracle updates don't exist.

I know that this will fall on the deaf ears of a thousand retards, but beta is purely about logistics. It is NOT to showcase the content of the game. It is PURELY to make sure that the various gameplay systems and mechanics all function together as a whole. Testing things like mob AI does not require a vast variety of quests, zones, or for that matter, mobs. You are not supposed to "enjoy" beta. It is not here to entertain you. It is so the developers can make sure the damned thing works with more than just the people in the office playing it. The level of sheer stupidity that most of the posters on this forum exhibit is simply staggering. How many of you can manage to operate a computer, or even breathe on your own, is totally beyond me.

I would much prefer for SE to do whatever the hell they want and make something unique, even if it "sucks".  There are a lot of games on the mmo list on this site that I think suck, but there are people that really enjoy them.

If I don't enjoy it, I will move on.  It's just a game and until then I can hope for the best :)

While that's true.. games don't generally waitt until just before release to test those functions. The last game to do that would be WAR, and we all saw how that turned out. To this day it's a buggy mess.

When you're making an MMO, you start with the main mechanics and work towards the more specific ones. However, by the time the game is supposed to launch, if you aren't already well into testing the more specific mechanics (which do include a lot of what's present in the content section), then you are likely to have a lot of problems.

There are still mechanics in the current phase that should've been fixed months ago.

I'm pretty sure the mods either just warn anyone they happen to see say the word "troll" (and they just randomly skim threads) - or they'll slap a warning on anyone who is reported, and apparently all the trolls report you for calling them out.  I've gotten similar warnings for less provocative posts.  They consider it a personal attack.  Just don't bother saying it - the trolls know who they are and their arguments are weak enough on their own.  The people who respond to them were going to anyway probably.

That said, threads like this really don't have much potential to become anything but flame wars - it's not worth bothering.

There's "generally", and then there's Square-Enix. This is just the way they test games. They have in-house testers to test the areas that are not in the beta as well as the higher-level content. There's no possible way that a major game developer would release a game with 90% of the areas, mobs, spells, and quests just completely untested.

I don't remember which thread it's buried in, but someone posted a very good explanation of how the Japanese software development process differs from the one we are accustomed to reading about. The various features are worked on at the same time rather than completing the basics before working on specifics.

This is true, I've been reported and warned over nothing before.

One guy got really offended that I suggest he use the image editor instead of linking pics, and then saying "derp". He basically blew up on me, then reported and blocked me after being *really* insulting himself - but did he get a warning? No, because he was the one making the report, which is a get-out-of-jail-free card. I had no clue "derp" was that big of a deal either way.

If you believe someone is baiting others in a negative way, it is best to report them. Calling them a "troll" is flaming, and that is where a warning is issued. Please do not take it upon yourself to name-call or bash another user. This is just as much against our Rules of Conduct as trolling is.

    to stay on topic.

I think the beta is (in my mind) doing alot of good for the developers at SE. I dont think SE anticipated as much backlash from the players about things such as hardware mouse, ui menu, questleves 48hr reset... etc.

I do think this will provide useful information so that SE can make the right decisions later on down the road. That does not mean they will make the right decisions now, but they will have an opportunity to fix things should they choose to.

PS: on a side note I could still use a functioning beta key!!!

GW2 seems like the better option.  It will take this genre by storm.  People will get sick of paying for subs when they can play a game like gw2 that is well polished and releasing good content and graphically amazing.

FF14 looks like it may just be shaping up to be a grind/ snooze fest.

I love how you are commenting on every thread you can about how Guild Wars 2 is the next generation of MMO. (Not only in this section, but in sections for other games, as well.)

For the OP, beta keys are being given out to randoms because some people do that. I had an extra key and gave it out, so why not?

Not ever game. Some games I don't post about gw2.   There are games that I like better than gw2 and ff14 is not one of them,

DId I pre order the CE, yea I did. Will I regret it? that is what I have been told , but we will see when I play the game. I don't go by what people on the forums say, I have a mind and can make it up on my own.

If you plan your activities ahead of time, that extra cost may be worth it. Powerleveling a craft with a week advantage can result in a fortune of extra gold as newbies buy up your Cotton Cowls or upgraded weapons that they are simply unable to synthesize themselves. Also, you get first dibs on retainers, which may be rather valuable as I've come to believe that Square placed a physical limitation on how many retainers can exist at a given city per server at any one time. It would certainly explain why Ursulie gives the "come back later when my hands aren't so full" crap when any player tries to talk to her now.

I guess we had forgotten Bata's like :

    Vanguard

    AoC

    Warhammer

    Champions Online

    Aion

Games such as this were not bashed near as bad as FF14 in Bata.  Even games like ArchLord had a better rap than this one at this point of the game.  Remember how the fans stuck up for them also ? These games failed for content / coding. FF14 is failing for content / coding / interface / controls.

All the fans think their game is unique, and they ignore history. I'VE NEVER SEEN AN MMO RECOVER 30 DAYS BEFORE RELEASE.

Above are facts. Now for my two cents....FF14 is an Asian game, they don't care about our opinion !

Speaking of content is the game going to have REAL quests at launch? Currently it's only got this guildleve garbage which is just rebranded dailies (and about as interesting lore/story wise as a daily). Not having real quests is a dealbreaker for me since I'm no grinder.

I hope to god they do add quests though, as the rest of the game is pretty awesome (played it all day today).

Yeah, I'm sure they're going to add bosses and actual instances to the game. The developer blog said they would, but we only are testing out the basic game mechanics in beta. I can't wait for overarching storyline quests, Marauder's Guild treasure hunts and maybe even voice acting (gasp!) in the actual release.

It amazes me that every game that's been about to be released the last 2 years been criticised and judged even before it's released. But this attempt must be one of the worst. Could you not be a bit more creative and come up with something better?

Post something interest or just move along. Better yet, if you don't think this game will be for you, find one that will suit you and post about it instead.
