Something I noticed

Gabby-airGabby-air Member UncommonPosts: 3,440

Browsing through the forums and reading the chat in game I noticed that not a lot of people seem to be enjoying the game or having fun. Actually the closest I've seen was "I was surprised I liked it" from someone whos never played a final fantasy game before. Now it had me thinking if it was just the beta that was the reason behind this but then I thought of other game betas and ruled this one out because even very bad betas I've seen people have fun. I personally think the game has potential and will wait till open beta to come to a conclusion on my thoughts but as of right now I can certainly see why people aren't enjoying it. So yeh, anyone else notice that not too many people seem to be enjoying themselves while playing the game?

Also I know there's people that are having fun but it just felt weird that there was so little talk if any at all about how much "fun" the game was rather than all the other things. Even previews I've read didn't really talk about how the game actually felt and talked more or so about the features of the game itself.

Well, the thing is, Aion was a lot similar in the respects that it was "fun" in beta, but once it went live most people dropped it after their free month.

You have to remember SE is keeping 99% of the games content under wraps durring Beta, of course it gets boring doing the same levequests over and over... and staying in the same zone the whole time.  Most people in Beta once they've figured out how the game is going to play simply stop playing, there is no point in playing an MMO when your character will just be deleted anyways.

If you want to base a conclusion on something worthwhile, wait til 6 months after launch. IMO beta and launch should be for people who don't care how the game is, they just want in.  If you care how the game is, and we're talking about MMO's, a game you may play for a year or more if it's good, wait for a free trial sometime around 6 months after launch, then come to  a conclusion.

I personally had the opposite experience as the people you mentioned, OP.  I went into beta expecting to like the game, but came out wondering if I should cancel my CE preorder (and I've played every FF game including FFXI, so I had some idea of what to expect in what other people consider shortfalls of the game).

In my experience, beta is one of the most fun periods of gameplay, especially this close to launch when the game is mostly in launch form, because everyone who is playing really wants to be there and give the thing a chance.  I had no issues at all with the community, but the game just wasn't where I believed it should be after it's fairly long development cycle.  It has a solid enough foundation with lots of potential, but the content just isn't there.  I know they are adding more in the open beta build and more than that at launch, but from what I'm hearing now - I don't think it's going to be enough to keep the game interesting for me personally.  SE made me believe that they had learned from the shortfalls of FFXI, and in some ways they have - but they've managed to completely miss the (crucial) point when it comes to mmo's needing content beyond basic grinding.

I'll give open beta a shot if I get the chance, but the signs are saying you should give this game about 6-12 months more incubation time after launch to get more content implemented and other big issues fixed (such as the economic system) before really trying to dig into it.

For me and many others, it may be too late by that point, with the blockbuster line-up of AAA mmos launching in 2011...

lol, I agrre with Twrule. I thought the OP was being sarcastic at first. The game had no fun elements atm and is an exercise in patience. Everthing just seems akward. The UI is beyond bad atm (the Devs say they are working 24/7 ti fix this for launch). There are very few quests and the guildleves have a 48hour CD. I was looking forward to the crafting but it is a major pita. I have high hopes for this game but in its current state (i know it is in Beta) it is not fun. I will wait about 6 months to buy the game and i expect it to be fun by then.

I personally think it was more or so the grind that led to the downfall of Aion, the first 10 levels of that game were probably the best I've ever played.

True, but since it being SE and a very high budget game I personally expected much more.

Sorry I seemed to have confused you guys, I actually WAS talking about how not many people seem to be enjoying the game at all me included. I was just pointing out that it was weird so little people seemed to have been enjoying the game at this point.

Maybe I'm getting ADD or something, but lately, I have been having trouble finding a single game that hold my attention for more than 3 weeks at a time.

You weren't alone in that expectation...and as far as your Aion comment, well...Aion had considerably more content available even in beta than FFXIV does now.

Everything in FFXIV right now revolves around grinding mobs, grinding crafting, or grinding harvesting.  Guildleves, which they emphasized so much, are just "kill x of y" quests.  And you can only do 8 of those every 48 hours.  Besides that, you've got the story, which is mostly cutscenes and running around with hardly any gameplay - just like the FFXI execution.  It might still be enjoyable, but it alone isn't enough.

People will lead you to believe its burnout which might be the case but I personally think it's just the fact that all the MMOs are way to similar nowadays and when you quit a game to play another its just the same old again.

This^^. I haven't been playing as much because I don't want to burnout on a character that will get deleted in a few weeks time. I've gotten a taste of the game, and I find I love it. I got lost, my boys were watching me play and they were like ooh, go in that cave. We did, I died. Mobs in there were scary. I haven't felt that in ages in an MMO. But besides exploring Limsa Lominsa and the surrounding zone which is just MASSIVE, there's not much else to do now but wait for release to get into the meat of the game which is story driven.

The people not enjoying it, suffice it to say, this isn't their type of game. They keep thinking it's going to follow all the normal MMO rules we have seen since WoW. But time and again SE has always said this and FFXI are Final Fantasy games first MMORPGs second. That means a lot. Or I could break it down and say if you liked FFXI you will probably like this, if not you probably won't. But that might be generalizing it a bit.

Well the thing is, SE said they were aiming for the casual crowd and wow players but at the same time being unique at it too and unfortunately both of them aren't going together so well. As of right now it seems to me FF14 wouldn't be a big MMO and will appeal to the more old school and FFXl crowd.

Heh, yeah. Now of all times, is the time to go crazy and do stuff you otherwise wouldn't do. Since your chars will get wiped at launch, you can just go around and explore. :)

I liked FFXI except for a few glaring flaws (lack of leveling content, forced grouping) which I believed would be addressed in FFXIV.  This believe was based on SE's whole approach to making it more casual friendly and such.  I now believe they've failed to accomplish their own goals (there's no longer quite forced grouping, but still no leveling content).

Well FFXIV isn't as big over here as it is in say.. Japan. There are threads on here about how insane it is over there with advertising ect... here I think it's just going to quietly release and people will find out that it's out and buy it.

I had never heard of FFXI when I picked it up at GameStop out of pure borderm and then ended up playing it for a couple years.

I will be getting FFXIV and I'm super excited. I'm honestly just trying not to think about but I'm sure it'll be popular and i'm sure people are having fun
