Square Enix is introducing a “fatigue” system to upcoming MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV which will apparently see players hit with crippling penalties if they play more than an hour a day, with those daring to play more than 4 hours having their XP reduced to 0.
Square Enix acknowledge the existence of the system in an interview and in previous comments, but are strangely reticent about providing specifics:
Tell us about the “fatigue” and “dormancy” systems please.
We wanted to introduce a system to reward players who don’t have a lot of time to play. Maybe it looks as though we are placing long playing users at a disadvantage, but the idea is really to let play for short periods be viable.
Won’t that cause some concern amongst players who play for longer?
We want these players to try different classes. If you change class the fatigue doesn’t affect you, so you could try non-combat classes as well. You actually have more play choices now as you can make more characters.
“Some concern” may be a colossal understatement if early reports of just how draconian the limits are turn out to be correct:
Fatigue goes up to about 50% in 2 hours, and it takes 2 days to go down! So, if you play 4 hours you have to stop playing completely for 2 days!
WHAT!?
Only 1 hour a day!
What’s really amazing is that you have to pay a monthly subscription for this…
They can’t get away with this on a subscription game. They’ll be sued!
So you get bonuses for staying logged out – the servers are going to be nice and quiet, aren’t they!
More on the “dormancy” system:
Recovery takes time.
2 hours of combat or 1 hour of craft will induce “dormancy.”
The dormancy is actually shared over different characters.
It will decrease gains to 0% in the end.
It seems to be proportional to the amount of XP you earn.
Both light and heavy player are going to weep...
Such systems are not unique, but Square Enix appears to have taken the system to an extreme likely to either completely eliminate its “hardcore” player strata – to say nothing of its high-handedness in dictating to players that they can only play an hour day.
Is this all true? If yes then sorry I love FF but Square failed.
If you mean to say that FFXIV won't be a "WoW clone", that I can see, as the interface and controls, not to mention visual style, are completely different.
Believe me or not, when I got bored of WoW and wanted to try something different, I stumbled accross LOTRO, only to tell myself 'not this again, tank, dps, healer'...
To me, it's not so much a matter of gameplay solo wise, but rather the group mechanic that reminds me incidentally of WoW, since it wasn't the first to use this class specific roles philosophy.
Interface and controls are still the strong pillars of WoW, so I'm guessing what you are saying there can't be good...
your are going to try the open beta, PLEASE go in with an open mind and realization that most of the games content won't be in the open beta. Also don't go in expecting a WoW, Lotro, WAR, EQ2 or other game experience because you won't get it.
Actually they already said that during open beta pretty much all the content that will be available at launch will be in open beta. So in the interest of not misleading others what you see in open beta will be pretty much what you get at launch. But he is right its not like any other mmo out there. Its worse....
OMG wow thank you so much! I mean... I was thinking I'd maybe try this game because I really enjoy MMOs, and I've been a FF fan ever since I was 8 years old, but dude, you telling me this game is worse than any other mmo, without any empyrical or anecdotal evidence to even support your own subjective opinion, has single-handedly warded me off from ever playing this game. Thank you so much!
The others who frequent this forum should be forever in your debt. You have saved them from playing a game you do not like. I know you have saved me. Hallelujah!
Unless I'm mistaken, the dude told me that he is NOW in beta testing but isn't allowed to say anything but with what he said, it does give me pause as to wether or not to play this game.
If Square did add this kind of a system into FFXIV then it is entirely unnoticeable. I've been playing for 4-8 hours at a time and gaining multiple levels on a single Class and have not yet seen my XP or SP go down. The only time you will see large reductions is if you party with people who are to high you dont do anything in the fight or the enemy is to weak.
For the peolple whining about the lack of mouse in game, I use the mouse to move target and attack. What else did you want it to do?
For the people complaining about the guild leave cool down 8 every two days as it were, you can build a party of 15 people each with 8 guild leaves for a total of 120 guild leaves aka 60 hours worth of partying.

Hmm I find this type of post refreshing after reading so many doom and gloom ones, are you mostly partying? When ever I see people ask about surplus and then get asked if they partying they always avoid answering. What you said about leave system is pretty much what i've heard in the past SE said they wanted people to do with it which is "share" them with others. Instead I just keep picturing on most the beta tons of people soloing and all soling their leave at the same time then idling about complaining while others are off having fun making friends and doing a leave together.

Yep, thats what we belived when we entered the Star Trek Online Beta...
...came launch day and it was worse... (no Klingon faction content in Beta? Nah, they will open it on Launch! Yep, they will)

Exactly. With STO, however, we already had a preview of the game engine with CO and CO left me wondering if STO would bomb, which it did. FFXI on the other hand was my favorite MMO next to WoW of all time, and that gives FFXIV a much better shot at pleasing me. Besides, I'm in beta, and I already know I love it.
For me, seems like the more I see of this game, the more I don't like it and the more it seems to be a step back in MMO evolution, as opposed to a big step forward, like that of other MMOs coming soon, like GW2. But also, no, I have not played the game yet, at all. And with that, I still will give this game a shot and play in the open beta. I do have some faith in this game that it might still be worth while, that and I do like the Final Fantasy series allot. Parts 3/6, 7, 10, and 12 have been my favs. Never could get into FF11, I do have a fear that this game will be too much like it. I suppose I'll find out soon enough...

I found it on different site. Loong text.

Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.

This looks like it could be pretty good. Can't wait to try it.
My 2 Cents on STO:
They could of made every race ever known in the ST IP playable with tons of content for each race and it would still suck.
