Swapping Classes In The Field

VxarVxar Member Posts: 58

My friends and I were discussing the ability to swap your class based on group needs.  From what I understand, you are able to swap your class simply by changing what weapon you have equipped, instead of having to go all the way back to your home.

My question is, what are they doing with gear?  If say, you're currently a Conjuror, then you want to be a Gladiator for a group, you would likely be using different armor, correct?  Are you given additional inventory slots in order to compensate for the different gear you'd need to carry to be able to swap in the field, or how exactly will they be handling gear that you have for your "off" classes?

You are able to switch classes just by switching weapons. You just have to be out of combat ("passive mode") in order to do it. You don't get a separate inventory space to hold armor. When you ask about additional inventory slots, what are you talking about? Additional compared to what? I don't think there's an industry standard for inventory slots. And even if there was, the amount of stuff you end up lugging around varies greatly from game to game anyway.

Incidentally, it is possible to build elaborate macros that will, among other utility effects, swap out your active equipment AND assign skills to your character.

The current macro syntax differs quite extensively from FFXI, but a nice guide can be located here.

Hm..so does armor/clothing effect the performance of your class or anything?

Or could you for example, switch to a caster decked out in Plate/Chain armor and not suffer any penalties?

I haven't really read much on gear for the game yet and I haven't heard anything about restrictions regarding class and armor choices..

Very cool, although your skillbar should REALLY be saved and restored automatically when you switch classes the normal way.

Right now armor can be worn by all classes.  I have yet to see a single piece of gear (aside from weapons and a shield) that are class restricted.  If you want to wear chainmail on your conjurer you can, but in general robes have nice caster stats so I wouldn't bother trying to make a conjurer tank (although in beta currently enmity is way off, and it's very difficult to pull something off a conjurer using buffs or cure).  You also wouldn't be making much use of the +str chainmail typically comes with.  You'll also have to gimp your stats in point allotment to do so, since you'd have to sacrifice a caster oriented stat for vitality.

Certain classes obviously favor different armor, for instance pugilist has abilities that activate on evade and other abilities to increase their evade as well as being very reliant on dex.  Most "leather" armor types come with high evade and some +dex, so a Pugilist would make good use of leather armor.  Gladiators, Lancers, and Marauders on the other hand will favor chain and other heavy armor types.  Spellcasters will probably want to go with cloth and robes, because they give benefit to caster stats, etc.

One thing to note is you can mix and match skills within the battle classes as you please, so if you want a conjurer with gladiator skills you can do so (why you would want to, that's another story) as long as you have action points.  Your available action points increase with your skill rank (not to be confused with your physical level).

Currently loadouts aren't saved, so you'll want to make a macro and keep up with it.  Fortunately your macro can do just about everything from switching gear to assigning action points for abilities you want in that class.

At the beginning for the game no, other then your main weapon, which ups the stats for that class.

Later on I'm guess there will be gear better for certain classes.

Tho I see caster gear being universal, between the 2.

The DoW classes will probably have Plate for the Glad, mail for like Lancer and Maruader, and Leather for Archer and Pugalist... or something like that.
