To anyone who is in beta or when you get into open beta, look at the sky...
The wife's computer kept crashing after a few minutes playing so I did some cleaning up of it (physically and digitally) and logged her in and left it to see if it would crash.
Well, I look over and the camera had tilted to the sky. It was a slight wind storm. You could see 3 distinct layers in the upper sky, the actual sky and 2 layers of clouds. I thought that was really cool.
Then, some low passing clouds came by moving faster than the uper atmosphere ones, they had volume to them and were soft, amazing. Then I noticed the wisps of fog passing by the actual character, barely noticable. Then the leaves, leaves would blow and twist up and down.
It looked amazing. It was the way all the elements were independent of eachother but came together realalistic enough that your mind filled in the missing pieces and you could feel the storm.
I've looked at the sky during a couple of other weather changes, and while good, I'm still waiting for that storm again.

Yep, I was oogling the sky as well. The Square artists are top notch in their field.
What I'm really digging, is the animations and artwork on the character models and especially the creatures that inhabit the world. They look so real and each are very unique, I get the same feeling looking at them as I do all the animals in a zoo that I've never seen. You just can't NOT look at them.
Yeah I have been exploring a lot in beta and I look up, and around all the time. It really is pretty amazing when some of the storms are rolling in. I can only imagine how crazy this system could get in a lava field or deep cave.
Very very cool.
The animations are very nice. I like how when you stop running your character tries to stop running... It sounds silly but instead of just stopping the run animation your character looks like they are trying to stop running (as in applying force opposite to the direction they are moving, and thier hands and body react to that force as well).
The wife can't get over how her (I forget the name of the race) little girl runs with the hands out to the side.
Yep, its all the little nuances that really make both FFXI and FFXIV a truly living and breathing world. Check out this video of FFXI Nuances to see what I mean, and if you take the time to stop and look around in FFXIV, you'll see the start of things like this all over.
Here is another one...
I agree with the running. It the little things like that, and when you do an emote the character's faces actually change rather than just a simple eyebrow move, that really give your toon life in this game.
Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level, then beat you with experience.
Also, I don't know if it counts as HDR, but I love the harshness of daylight as you step out of a building or cave / tunnel. The sense of adjusting your eyes to the surroundings feels very accurate and I've not seen it before in a MMO.
Also, the skies do look brilliant. Characters too look so expressive compared to other games...I could go on...
Yeah, the light change as you change environments, just like real life, makes it extremely immersive. I love watching the creatures as they walk around too, they sometimes seem to follow you, the non aggro ones I mean. Like they are curious about you as much as you are curious about them.
Nice! There's things that I had never seen in my 6 years of FFXI in there. thx
