Syncaine Visits Greece and Meets with AV

For those that may have missed it, Syncaine recently went to Greece and had the pleasure of meeting AV at its corporte HQ and later for drinks from 9pm to 2am.     A lot of great info on his blog and podcast you can find at that link.

Below are a few notes I made while listening, quotes I picked up listening to the Hour + podcast interview.    It is worth checking out if you're a fan of DFOl.

"it's like a totally different way of rendering the world. I think people will be blown away"

"with the new world building system it will be easier to mold the world. Current areas are getting a make-over in certain parts" (he saw the before & after of the human capitol and said some aspects are subtle but on the whole are totally amazing in how it looks)

"the forums present one kind of game, but the actual game is very different"

"people forget how small AV is and have no idea how amazing it is they've created what they have"

"dungeon revamp offers a NPC at each dungeon with quests from 1x to chain type quests with decent & randomized rewards" "these NPC's won't be race specific but will have various factions and relate to chaos cities so you can build reputation with factions which is an added tier beyond mere race" (phase 1, will be upgraded and revamped in the future as villages will be getting some upgrades/revamps at patch)

"they want to flesh out PvE and the new player experience"

"will be expanding a whole bunch of stuff crafters can make" (in DFO 2010)

"sound is getting a pretty huge overhaul. Redoing how sound is generated"

"mobs will get new skills that players don't and won't have/get"

"working on in-game political map and make running a clan a lot smoother"

"UI revamp is going to be huge" "total over-haul, not just from a front-end what we see, but back-end and make the UI more functional. easier to interact with"

"Ginger Magician has an opinion on just about every thing. How do you have an opinion on every thing?" lololol

^^ Nicely done.

Cheers -CC

While I do respect you trying to promote the game I can't just sit back and say something about this.

"people forget how small AV is and have no idea how amazing it is they've created what they have"

The game was in production for 7+ years and when released it failed to include a large majority of the features it promised. Also we should not be concerned how large or small the dev team is as long as they deliver what is promised. They fail to do this with almost every patch. DF2010 that everyone talks about is supposed to come in two parts. The first to have been released in June. Its now the end of August and the last time we got an update that wasn't driven by community uproar was July 14th. The latest post by Tasos was on August 6th when the forums erupted with posts on the horrible Q & A. Also DF2010 has pretty much been confirmed as being delayed to 2011. "DarkFall 2010 was just a code name they gave it" do they think anyone believes this.

Performance has gone down the tubes for most users. This is especially apparent in sieges. The website claims thousands can battle against eachother, The siege I was at last weekend had 250 give or take and thats not subtracting the dozens of players disconnecting  repeatedly. I have a decent pc and its well above the minimum requirements. I was getting a whopping 4-8 fps and maybe once or twice saw 12. TS was full of people voicing the same issue. This was not a one time thing. Oh and thats with all settings turned down. If you think this is just a random whiner check the tech support forums. You will find hundreds of threads complaining about the same thing.

We won't even go into the ping issues lately spiking into the thousands, or the out of virtual memory error that was fixed a yea ago and yet happened to several people during the last siege.

AV is destroying the game themselves. Not the players.

"Syncaine recently went to Greece and had the pleasure of meeting AV at its corporte HQ and later for drinks from 9pm to 2am. "

No one doubts that they are nice human beings. Im sure most of them are top notch people. Plus why should I be all content that they decided to show 1 guy around and give him info, but can't take the 5 minutes to write an update post saying "Hey we are still alive".

The second half of DF"2010" has a majority of the content as they have stated several times. So we should expect to see that may or june of next year.

Not all is bad and some do deserve credit.

The artists deserve their credit. They designed a world that was beautiful and I tip my hat to them. The world is different everywhere you go and its actually fun to explore in this game.

There design also makes pvp better because you never know what will be around the next rock if you are unfamiliar with the area.

The designers of the AI also deserve their credit. Its pretty impressive and helps out with the grinding.

The game lives with people hoping that it will someday be the game they promised at release and function properly.I must admit I am one of those people. I don't hate the game. I hate that its not at the development point it was supposed to be at years ago.

That stuff all sounds great. . but I want to see it working  the last MO patch broke a tonne of things.  It took me a loooong time but I just don't believe it until I see it.. . and see it running well.  I will continue to play DF though.  I still like the game as is.

I love Darkfall and support it as often as I can with my sub, but to be honest I find it unfortunate that "Syncaine" has managed to associate himself with such a great game.

Here's a guy who screams and rants on his website that buying used games = stealing, and that developers are somehow entitled to continue making money on physical products every time they change hands from private citizen to private citizen in a free market.

Darkfall's great and I hope it gets a lot of positive publicity, just not through this ignoramus who has no clue how the real world works.

Hoping this means they'll get rid of the grey fog. :)

ok I dont know how much money developer firms bring in but I DO know how much game developers (the individuals) make compared to what I do as a business developer. It aint much in comparsion. They work much longer, do more and make less than they can if they just do custom apps for internal businesses like I do .

not saying what you mention is wrong, just saying they dont make as much as you might think.

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Nice!  The UI over haul is needed.

I have been woking my bindings again and I keep running into some minor glitches which are annoying.  Good to see it is more than a new UI but back-end work as well.

Hope the new "terrain system" will really help them speed up content development.  I have had good hopes here and this re-enforces those expectations.

    @SEANMCAD

You are dead on.  Most game developers do not make bank.  In fact the type of work those people do are typically refered to in the industry as "code slaves."  I cringe anytime I talk to a high school kid who wants to become a "video game developer."  Salaries for a video game software developer are 50% to 75% those of other software areas (thank god I work with Embedded HW & SW sytems).

The recent http://forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php?t=263048 expansion is just the tip of the iceberg (nice pun CC ^^)

The URL at the start of this thread will help one understand the greater degree of work being done on DFO that this last expansion is representitive of.
