It seems to me that if a person wants to maximize their stats the way to do it is to play all classes. It actually seems a bit overpowered to me. Opinions?
You have to assign your own stat points and attributes.. its based off your base level not your class level. Ranking up your class only gives you new skills, it however does not give you anything else.

Yeah, wht he said. Though I'd also like to add my 2 cents here and mention that you only get 6 stat points to spend per level and of course there is a total of 6 stats to choose from. Since you can only recover 6 points after spendnig them, this makes it almost impossible to switch from a tank build to a mage build. Lets say you want to go with a 3/2/1 build with VIT/DEX/STR as your tank stats, then cus of surplus you decide its time to switch classes, going mage? forget it. Though you have a decent ammount of damage from spells, it will never top the guy with high int. So why not put points into int? Well what good is that for tank and melee dps? none what-so-ever. So this imo forces you into choosing do ya want a gimp understated character that will never be a better tank than the 3/2/1 guy, or, go with that build and never touch mage? For a game that should allow you to switch between classes at any time you wish, it still seems rather restricting to me. I prefered how FFXI worked where the stats were automatically assigned and were adiquirt for the class you were currently playing which changed when you changed your class. It wouldn't be so bad if we were able to reclaim ALL stat points to restat to a different class but I guess that would be too simple.
You have a physical level and a skill level. The skill level has the largest effect on your base stats and only levels as you do things within your job class. Your physical level increases as you do anything that would normally give EXP and your physical level never decreases as you switch jobs, so you can be a physical level 50 with a rank 1 job.
Every physical level you get points to put into extra stats such as vitality for more health or dex for more accuracy. It starts out at 6, but it will increase (for example at physical level 29 I got 8 points to spend per level). You also can put 6 other points into elemental resistances of your choice.
You'll notice a big reduction in your effectiveness if you allocated points for a physical type and switch over to a mage type, but keep in mind that skill level is the huge determining factor of outcomes in fights not physical, and even if you were physical level 50 with a rank 1 job you won't even come close to killing a Dodo designed for Rank 12-20.
As far as using abilities from different classes is concerned, you'll probably want to level quite a few to get the best mix of abilities, but any abilities you take from classes that aren't your own receive penalties like increased cooldowns and a reduction in effectiveness. Using Disciple of War abilities on a Disciple of Magic class can come with penalities as harsh as a 300% increased cooldown and 50% decreased damage. Most of your abilities you have you'll want to keep on the class you got them with. In beta I had several classes leveled past 15 and 2 past 20, but on my Marauder only used Second Wind from Pugilist and Invigorate from Lancer, because the increased cooldowns and reduced effectiveness didn't making using other abilities viable.

Interesting feedback Magnum but still doesn't justify the fact that you'll want to put points in specific stats for specific classes and if ya wanted to redeem them to restat for a different class type you could only obtain 6 back! Also, I have no idea how to redeem them any further after that as the button seems to dissapear. And before you state on whether there's plenty of points given to spend/waste some into int to switch from melee to mage, some of us might not consider that as a great option if we prefer to be melee focused, or visa versa when it comes to str. By the way, I also found that vit does NOT increase your health what-so-ever, it only increases defense.
Vit does increase your health, but you have to log out and in or die to have it updated. Same with when you increase in skill rank. Had a linkshell member report this bug, since Phase 3 testers can't send reports.
As far as restating again goes, it has a cooldown timer. Something like every 4 hours. Not sure on the specifics because I didn't try reallocation.
They almost force you to spend points into caster specific stats if you go melee focused too. Every 40 points you put into a stat the total number of points it needs to raise the value increases by one. So if you have 120 str you need to put 4 points into it to increase it to 121. Unless you are deadset on min-maxing that specific class, it's probably a good idea to distribute points into caster stats every once and a while.

rofl @ having to relog. Well thats a bug and a half that certainly needs fixing. Though tbh I hardly noticed any significant changes in my health after logging out and logging back in so I'm not so sure if this is true. I only noticed it change when my weapon rank went up! As for the stats becoming more costly in points the higher the overall is, I don't think many would care that much if they were so deadset focused on being a tank or melee, and I highly doubt a deadset mage is gonna wanna waste many points into pointless ones such as STR either. However, here's another thing to consider, say they had 120 STR, or 120 INT, depending on what they chose to be, and they did around 100ish points to what they consider second and third vital stats, for example dex and vit, do you honestly think they would have many points left over to even bother placing into not so seemingly vital stats? I highly doubt it. I also feel sorry for the mage focused players more since there is only 2 that would hugely rely on INT vs the 4 physical damage classes that would obviously benifit from STR/DEX/VIT or VIT/DEX/STR builds. It seems to me you either want to stat for only 2 mage classes or 4 phhysical classes and if ya want to be stated for both you gotta gimp one of your other stats to compensate whichh will make you less more effective than the guy next to you who maxed out his character to fit his roll. Also, the deal with reusing reclaim stat points every 4 hours is pretty bad imo. 6 points every 4 hours? please tell me that increases too at a certain level else that will take ALOT of time to regain any significant ammount back! Granted its good ya don't have to pay gil for it, or so it seems, but thats about the only benifit it has. 6 stats redeemed at every 4 hours to me is a joke, you'd be logging in 3-4 times a day (if ya can't be bothered to stay logged in) just to redeem another 6 points so you can play a mage instead of a melee effectively which by that time you'll probably end up waiting til the following doay to spend all your points into int because 6 points per 4 hours ain't gonna do a huge ammount for you for that day.
I don't how ture it was but someone once said you hit respec once every 30 minutes... you get about 12 of your points back at a time...
If you wanted put more points into something then single respec, then you have the let the points sit, gimping yourself for the time it takes to get the points you wanted to switch.
Lets hope their is a NPC you can paid to return all your points (with like a 24 hours timer)

Well I tried it, got 6 back, my friends tried it, got 6 back. I never noticed the respec button re-appear but then again I did give up on that character so meh. And yeah, I'm definately up for that NPC idea myself.
what about having 2 characters, one meelee focused that can swap around tank/dps and the other be the int caster? i know you can swap jobs, but i think the stat thing being slow to change around is probably to get you to play other things, or you can take forever to retrain and just do it with 1, but not be a tank in the morning a wizard and lunchtime and an archer assassin by dinner hehe. o well game isnt even released yet, guess we gotta wait and see.

Well having alts is all well and good, and tis great you can have upto 3 without paying extra like you had to with FFXI, but the point in Final Fantasy MMORPGs, both 11 and 14, is that you can play any class at any time, and not need to have alts to play other classes. Having this restriction of swapping stats makes it less likely for people to want to swap classes, therefor it kinda takes out the whole "You can play any class you want at any time" gimic.
You have to think about what support class you want and balance your stats for your main and support class. Especially once you start using their abilities/skills as support as you will want those stats then as well. In FFXI SE raised stats for you, in FFXIV you do it yourself so it should not be a negative if someone can't comprehend or raise the stats they need.
If you want to be melee/mage then you need a nice blend of dex, str, vit, int, pie, mnd. You have to take into account how often you can respec and how much you can respec at a time, but overall it is a pretty good system that I am satisfied with. Maybe there should be a mog quest down the line that teaches him to let you respec higher through him or something.
Lets say you are a max level warrior with max character level. You decide to start being a mage. You are still just as if not more effective than any other level 1 mage.
You both will have the same int. You will have more health and power.
As you start leveling up your mage you could respec every now and then and put points into int from one of your other stats. Based off the rate that you level and respec you probably could keep your int at a reasonable level. I would say by level 20 mage you would still be just as effective as any other level 20 mage. You maybe have a little less INT but still more health and power.
So no, the system as it stands won't gimp you if you decide to roll another character.
Now as your Mage/Warrior ranks come closer together you'll have to choose a primary class and give your other classes just enough stat support not to suck.
I hope they introduce something like what EQ2 had with a spec mirror where you could choose 1 of 2 specs to swap between.
I know we plan on having a balanced stat distribution up to a certain point and then picking the one or two other stats to specialize in.
The stats mechanic is the only thing I don't like in this game. I think it defeats in part the whole point of being able to play all jobs with one char. Not liking it at all...
That & the fact that all races are the same. Thats just plain dumb.

I've read that all races are the same for beta. Your race and your Moon/Star that you choose during character creation is supposed to have some affect on your character. That's the rumor at least.
I should add that I think its a good idea to have all the stats the same. In a game where you can be any class and swap between them and you decide how your stats are distributed I don't see how character race should play a role. Now that moon/star thing is a bit different.
